Tilley Hat 1 Year Review - T3 Wanderer Turned Us Into a Tilley Family

In this video I review my first year with the Tilley T3 Wanderer. This hat gave way to some new Tilley hat additions: Tilley Tec-Wool, Tilley Paddler, Tilley Cotton Bucket, My First Tilley (a Tilley hat for kids!) and the Tilley Stripped Cotton Beanie.
NOTE: The wax I talk about in the video does not seem to be advised for the wanderer but only for Cotton or primarily cotton hats. Instead use some type of scotch guard spray. HUGE thank you to davyboy1379 for providing this information. Check out the pinned comment for more.
UPDATE ON CHILD'S HAT:
Tilley no longer makes this hat but said the hope to have another child's hat in the future. You can check out this one from Amazon which has the similar cinching system but it is pretty floppy so the edges do get pushed around in high wind:

I have the T3 Wanderer. I emailed Tilley about applying wax. They said not to do that it is only supposed to be applied to certain Tilley hats I think it's the Outback hat. They told me to apply a scotchgard type of spray. I used the Fabsil spray and it worked very well. I have the T3 Wanderer and the T5MO Organic cotton hat. They are both great hats.

Thank you for that information! I had read a few places that you could use wax on it, but I absolutely trust that Tilley knows their hats and what is to be used on them :) I pinned your comment and made a note in the description. Thanks again for sharing the correct information!

Yes exactly! No need to wax hats such as the T3 Wanderer , only hats that have the wax coating like our Outback.

Best Tilley review I’ve seen. Thanks for not calling it a secret pocket. Got to be the worst kept secret. I own a T3 & a wool tech hat myself. Both brilliant. I was going to opt for the Tilley straw hat for the few hot days we get in the uk but they’re quite hard to find hear.

Good review. I use my Tec wool Tilley a lot during the winter. It is very warm for my head which lacks its own insulation:) I did find that the ear flaps did little to prevent the wind from getting to my ears. The fit was just not snug enough. A wind from the front would push the flaps outward thus exposing my ears. So, I sewed a 1/4 inch elastic strap from the front bottom of the flap to the other ear flap along with a snap and now it holds the ear flaps tightly against my ears and the wind does not hit them. Remember, when ordering a Tilley hat, they are meant to be worn lower on your head than a typical hat. For me, that is comfortable. Typical hats that fight snugly at the top tend to give me a headache. Neither of my two Tilley hats do. My other Tilley is my go to hiking hat and I like it as well.

Great review, appreciate the information! Just wondered too how the Wanderer's brim handles wind, sun upon the face and neck? Is the brim pretty stiff or loose in strong, windy weather? Also, how does this hat fair comfort wise on truly hot, humid days? Thanks again!

I've recently worn this hat in the mountains for a 15km walk, in 30+mph winds and it was fine, kept the sun off which was strong enough to cause sun burn, even in the wind. You need to know how to use the strapping system correctly for it to stay on your head though, in that wind! ;-)

Say what?! I got a Tilley T3 wanderer and the it was two sizes small. And Tilley won't honor their warranty. They say sizing is not a defect. Last time I checked CM are a standard measurement around the world. Otherwise, it's a nice hat for any gnomes living in my closet. I may just eat the $100 and order another. But for that kinda money they should get the fucking sizing right according to their own standards.

Ouch! I'm really sorry to hear that. I haven't seen a ton of complaints and this is the first like this. I'm disappointed they wouldn't make it right or at least accept a return. I've seen a market for used Tilley hats. I understand you didn't use this one, but perhaps you could make some of your money back by selling it?

@@BlackberryHillHouse Thanks for the reply. Well I do I wear it. It just sits high up my head, too high for a sun hat (would be appropriate for a fedora), and is also a bit stifling in the heat since it hugs my head so tight. I frequent have to stretch it over my knee. I ordered 1 size too big 60cm, and since it came 2 sizes too small, then means it's only about 1 size too small. I did reorder it in a 61cm for my 59 cm head. It's in the mail. I think when you pay that much they should get the sizing right!

@Blake839 I've heard several other reports now, that for some models the sizing in accurate, and for other models it is off by 2 sizes. That is true in my experience too. The t3 is accurate, while the t3 wanderer is 2 sizes too small. I had to order several to get it right, and the off sizing has been consistent with all orders. I don't know who these people are who are saying the hat fit perfect on the first time. Unfortunately capitalism sent most manufacturing to China or 3rd world Asian countries, so there are no other quality canvas boonies like this. Amazon is filled with $12 crap from China. They have a few in the $50 range that look more like ordinary sun hats like sold by coolibar, Columbia, northface, and others. But as for something that looks like a cross between an Indiana Jones Hat and Vietnam boonie with quality stitching and canvas, there's nothing else that is comparable. That in my opinion is a failure of capitalism because people clearly love these hats, but the prices are ridiculous, and the sizing is hit or miss, but there is no viable competition to this particular style of hat. There are other styles of course and great options, nylon hiking boonies, panama hats, leather outbacks, safari hats, etc, but not this particular style. After buying many of the aforementioned for the desert climate I live in, I've settled on the t3 wanderer as my go to hat. These used to sell heavy canvas boonies that were surplus from Vietnam at the flea market down the road from where I grew up as a kid in the 90s. Well now I live an ocean away and I don't see that stuff online.
