When Alex Tilley, the founder of Tilley hats, retired in 2015, he sold the company to the Canadian branch of a UK based investment company, who then in 2018, sold the company to a Canadian based investment & business restructuring company, who expand a brand's potential by increasing production in low cost manufacturing sites & multiplying sales outlets.

I've had the same issue with a couple of Tilley hats, including this exact model, as well as a general dissatisfaction with their quality of late. I currently still own a ventilated summer hat but it's my last Tilley - it's pretty flimsy. I've moved on. My current waxed fedora style is by a UK manufacturer based since 1903 in Manchester. They're called Failsworth and don't sell directly but have several retail partners you can buy from. My hat is their Wax Drifter - it's made like a PROPER HAT and half the price of a shoddily thrown together modern Tilley.

I had the same problem, mine shrunk also, I should have contact the Tilly, but I gave it away, synthesis are made in China now, I decided to get a Bass pro Redhead, same hat, but it was 29.00 dollars, been very happy with it! No more Tilly for me..

Tbh, I wouldn't buy one again unless I got one at a substantial discount. I think there are far better value for money options out there. Best wishes, Des

This really is a lovely hat and would be absolutely perfect for fishing. They are rather expensive but if you managed to get one at a reduced price I don;t blame you for getting one. Glad to hear that my vids have helped. Best wishes, Des

Thanks for the video. I have a few Tilleys.. My favorites are the T5, The Outback and the Airflo. Awesome hats. If I need to wash them i do it by hand and I try not keep them to long in the water. Tilley has the Best hats!!!

That’s what size I wear! Also have the same hat in a brown. It’s their waxed cotton winter hat. I believe they’re made in Canada and not China. Looks like it has the red banner inside the hat indicating it’s made in Canada.

I own about 7 Tilley hats if you include the winter wool one. A standard T3 can fit me in two sizes 7 1/2 and 7 5/8. I do need the larger size when it comes to the more shaped nylon ones as they are not oval like a T3 but more a tear drop shape being more narrow in the front.

I picked up a Tilley T3 wanderer today. Still has the large user manual and velcro pocket. 10oz duck cotton canvas. Double check your labels for this model as Tilley has moved some models to be manufactured in China, which is very unfortunate. Mine is made in Canada.

I heard you say you like this color better. did you request a different color, or was the original color no longer available? I'm just surprised you couldnt get the same color you had before.

Hi there. The previous colour was not available so I just picked another one. I was referred to their website so I could just pick whatever hat I wanted under a certain price range and also choose my preferred colour. Best wishes, Des

I surely found one of the last olive (the old colour) ones in the country, eventually. I must've bought and sent back 4 or 5 "olive" ones from various shops that were all this new green colour when they arrived. Sellers just didn't seem to be able to understand that there is a difference. Hope mine doesn't shrink though after all that!

You mentioned you are able to push more than two fingers between the hat and the forehead. Is it too loose to be worn without the straps?

  • @21stcenturycaveman33

No, it's absolutely fine. I don't wear the straps anyway unless it's very windy and a risk of it blowing off. ATB, DEs

I've had my Tilly 9 years. Bombproof. But, it's made in Canada and the older style. They are made cheaper now and in China. If you can find one with the old label in get one.
