Matt Mercer said that during the campaign, the vestige and the connection to the Raven Queen were supposed to go to Percy. But of course, because Vex was killed by the trap, Liam O'Brien, the guy playing Vax, requested a deal with the Raven Queen to save her, so he got them instead. If you ask me, it suits Vax a lot better. Also, the story of how Vax and Vex found Trinket is really sad, but also kind of heartwarming. A combination I like to call a "classic Pixar moment". I also love how, thanks to that amulet, they don't have to leave him outside of cities and buildings anymore.

It was mores specifically the aesthetic of the armor that was inspired by Percy's mask and bird imagery, but it wasn't really "meant" for any of them specifically. It was designed for a Dex fighter, so any of Vax, Vex or Percy *could* have gotten a lot out of wearing it. The armor was an artifact of the Raven Queen, but a vestige doesn't guarantee any kind of connection to a deity. Her involvement in the campaign was not something Matt planned, but something that was improvised in the moment of Vex's death and Liam's choice to have Vax offer himself to the goddess during the ritual to bring her back. Liam was going through a shit time in his life (either having just lost, or preparing to lose his mother to cancer, I can't remember exactly), and was ready to sacrifice Vax so that Laura could keep Vex. When the ritual succeeded, the Raven Queen's attention was an attempt on Matt's part to turn the event into something meaningful and special for Liam. And, again, any of them *could* have used the armor, but at that point they all agreed it should be Vax. Which, you can say a lot about his character work and his voices, but *that's* the sort of thing that to me shows Matt's quality as a DM.

That's not actually true, It could have gone to any of the characters who could wear leather armor if I remember correctly, which is most of them. Now Percy was interested in the Matron of Ravens sure, but it wasn't designed for him specifically. I feel like Taliesin saying that Percy was interested in the Matron has over the years blown out of proportion into people thinking that Vax got armor meant for him or something. A lot of the vestiges Matt made with non specific intent. He had an idea in mind of who they might go to based on character's personalities and interests, but he wanted there to be flexibility and the chance for spontaneity. Also just for world lore reasons it would look kind of weird if there were weapons that seemed tailor made for each of them Specifically just lying around! Having a bit of ambiguity helps with the world building. Though I must agree that I'm glad Vax got the armor and not Percy, It suits Vax but it would have just been Too much on top of Percy's style. I mean Taliesin totally would have made it work, the man's a genius, but still, I absolutely love the way that both character's turned out. Edit: also what J Taylor said lol

The broom actually isn't a vestige, the reason they're calling so much attention to it is that later on they find a vestige underneath a bunch of dirt, and the only way to reach it is for Vex to sweep all the dirt away which would be impossible without the broom. It's a pretty interesting scene, tho Scanlan making her wear a maid costume while sweeping felt unnecessary, unfair of him to make her wear a particular item of clothing just to be able to use the broom

The inclusion of the spirit of Purvan Suul to test Vax was a great addition to the story. Because of how long he's been dead, the only time he was interacted with on the stream was a brief appearance in ExU: Calamity, which took place at a point in time when the Matron of Ravens had made him her champion, but before he got the armor, and we never got to really see what made him a legendary figure in the present day. Here, we get to see that he had the skills.

The stuff with Vax and the Matron of Ravens is explored throughout the season; you'll especially get answers in episode 11. But the main bits they don't explicitly say are (1) when he said "take me instead", she obliged, just not in the way he expected; and (2) the thread she cut wasn't Vex's life force, it was the connection between the twins, which she severed to forge a new connection between Vax and herself. Btw, I'd say Scanlan's character episodes this season are 6-7 and 10-12. And the woman at the end: it's not a spoiler. You know her already. Look at her hand: it's mechanical. There's only one character we've met with one hand.

The lady with the crystal ball at the end is Dr. Ripley from season 1. And for some of your other questions, here's a lore dump (no plot spoilers): The scary grim reaper lady is The Matron of Ravens aka The Raven Queen and she is the goddess of death. She was once a mortal arch-mage who invented a ritual to ascend to godhood and usurped the original god of death. The Calamity was a centuries-long war that started a little over 1000 years ago where the evil gods attempted to wipe all life off of the planet. Two thirds of all life was destroyed and Vasselheim (the city from ep 2) is the only city from that time to survive to modern day thanks to help from the good gods. The Calamity was what Vax was seeing visions of. Also, little bit of meta lore: This was Sam's (the guy who plays Scanlan) first ever DnD game and he said at the outset that he wanted to create "the worst character" which goes a long way to explain why Scanlan is the way that he is. However, there is more to him than it seems at first.

Basically they hired an artist to do one of those for every setting/scene so everyone working on that particular bit could refer back to that colour script for character positions, lighting and colour pallete. And they figured, well these look dope, let's just use them instead of paying even more for custom animated end cards.

I empathize with you on Scanlan. If I didn't already know his full story from Campaign 1, I think I'd feel a lot less charitable towards the character. I think some of the disconnect is that people who love Scanlan's arc look back at where he started with rose-colored glasses. Truth is, he does start in a rough place and does need to change to become somebody we can truly root for. That full arc, of course, is that Scanlan polymorphs into a cute little turtle and stays that way, and then he's just Vox Machina's turtle pet who dies tragically when a burly half-orc steps on him.

The animation on this show was great in Season 1, but in Season 2 they've just kicked it up quite a few notches. Arthur Loftis, the Art Director, is also a Critter. He contributed to the original kickstarter before he had any idea that he would be involved in it. All of those gorgeous backgrounds and settings are mainly him. And you're right to call out the lighting. Their post prod and color teams with the lighting, the shading, the affects like sparks and snow and rain and smoke are so amazing. And then I could gush on and on about the music as well. Neal Acree, yet another Critter working on the show, does an amazing job to set moods, boost action (the tentacled monster attack music was fantastic, for example) and overall sculpt our emotions with this show. If you go back and watch Episode 3, you'll notice that there was actually not much music until the very end after Vex's death. All amazing. Speaking of going back and watching, if you do, you'll notice that every time Vax sees the Matron of Ravens in Episode 1 and 2, you hear a quick croaking of ravens. Another of the great details they like to throw in. Such a well-made show.

The thing about DnD no one has plot armor. See there is dead (going to 0 health) and then there is dead-dead. Dead mostly means that someone is "unconscious and bleeding out" they can be be brought back with a healing spell. But then there is dead-dead and that requires higher level magic and expensive spell components. There are ways to bring people back yes but death is still a possibility. If you are not of a high enough level for the spells and some one that is dead-dead... Well that is time to roll up a new character. Normally you have the spell components you cast the spell but in Matt's game he wants death to mean something so he homebrews a rule that the spell also involves a ritual. Depending one the spell 1 to three people can help. Like once Grog intimidated someone (forgot who) back into life. In this one Percy triggered the trap but he dodged out of the way and Vex got hit. It was trap that dealt a massive amount of damage and if you went to 0 you just died. The look on Matt's face was gut wrenching when he realize. The spell ritual wasn't going well when Liam (Vax) stepped up and told the Matron of Ravens to take him instead. Also (I think but take with a grain of salt) at the time his mother recently so he channeled that into his plea of his in game sister. That also was even more gut wrenching. Professional actors...

You are correct about Liam's mom. In fact, Vax seeing the gold thread between him and Vex is explained later in the season. This is an ability that Matt gave Vax as a gift to Liam because he knew what Liam was going through. One of the problems with the series is how to handle death. Because of the rolls, you could have a character die in every single episode, and it would always feel tense. There would always be a weight to it. But in the series, you don't see that, so the weight has to come from the situation. And if we continually see people being healed and coming back from death, it's going to feel less and less tense. So far they've done a good job of keeping those stakes up. And the one benefit is that if/when it does happen that a character actually dies, it will be that much more impactful.

I love how unclear they make the communications from the deities. In Matt Mercer’s world lore, there exists something called the Divine gate, which prohibits the gods from directly affecting the world, by design. Kind of makes clear communicating difficult, however.

as clarification - the Matron wasn't foreshadowing Vex's death, but as you saw later... spoilers ... she told Vax she'd been watching him for longer than he knew. She wanted him, the Fate Touched. Vex's death was the opening she needed to get her talons into him.

5:03 - *“Can they do it?”* There are several ways to bring the dead back to life in D&D, and they have increasing power requirements and material cost, depending on just how dead the person is (ranging from "only _mostly_ dead" to "ashes scattered in the winds"). Matt added some homebrew rules to make the process more involved than just paying the gold and casting a spell, so that a character's death remains a scary prospect and never becomes a mere inconvenience. 9:08 - *“They're just gonna **_sweep_** the dragons with that. […] Did that joke make you **_bristle_** with indignation?”* Nah, I can _handle_ it. Let's just sweep it under the rug and dust out hands off it. 😉 12:01 - *“The fuck is that thing?”* That is a _completely new and original_ monster, called an "onlooker"… because Beholders (which is what they actually fought in the campaign) are copyrighted by Wizards of the Coast, and they would have to officially license it. Throughout the series, they've gone out of their way to avoid entangling their 100% creator-owned IP with any licenses from big corporations - and they were wise to do that, given what happened at the start of this year. Hasbro/WotC attempted to pull some _major_ evil bullshit by replacing the Open Game License, under which everyone had been using D&D for many years, with a new license that said "Everything you have created is _ours_ now, and we have the right to market, sell, or rewrite it however we see fit, without paying you a penny. Forever." Basically Hasbro/Wizards went "Wᴇ ᴀʀᴇ ᴀʟᴛᴇʀɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴇ ᴅᴇᴀʟ. Pʀᴀʏ ᴡᴇ ᴅᴏɴ'ᴛ ᴀʟᴛᴇʀ ɪᴛ ᴀɴʏ ꜰᴜʀᴛʜᴇʀ," and expected everyone to just roll over for them. What's worse, the language in the proposed OGL 1.1 seemed precision targeted at _Critical Role_ in particular, seeking to grab a shamelessly large part of their income for Hasbro/Wizards. It's probably not a coincidence that _Critical Role_ recently debuted a brand new fantasy roleplaying game of their own devising, called _Daggerheart,_ which appears to put a greater focus on narrative than pure mechanics. Many now expect them to transition from D&D to _Daggerheart_ at the end of campaign 3, or possibly earlier, if Hasbro/Wizards feel that everybody has forgotten what they did and try again. 19:43 - *“Percy's face!”* Travis (Grog) and Sam (Scanlan), who were overseeing the show's production, specifically asked the animators to slow down this bit, so that audiences could really savour Percy's goofy expression here. They'd be glad to know it was appreciated. 20:33 - Vex: _"Do you know what I bet would fit in it nicely?"_ - Grog: _"Me!"_ Fo-o-oreshadowing! 20:45 - *“It's like a pokéball.”* Which is exactly what the players always called it, at the table.

Vex does some crazy shit when she finds out Trinket is the final vestige....kinda....more like it's been in his stomach for years and recently learned one way to use it. At the table there was so much experimental feeding and waiting to get that bear to shit it out. Eventually they decided it was worth risking their vulnerable pet to be their vestige wielder in the final battle. Crazy awesome stunts they pulled.

To give some perspective the matron of ravens is basically like the Celtic deity the Morrigan without the confusing triple goddess hold over from the prior gaulic culture she's kind of a Shepherd of the Dead so Vax is working for a very important Grim Reaper figure he basically made a fairy bargain for his sister's life in that clutch moment take me instead was considered as a general offering

7:11 I mean it was Kash too, The Animation makes it a lot harder to see what's going on, which makes sense because it's all esoteric representation of DnD rules. But basically resurrection magic in Matt's world isn't automatic, they can fail. You make offerings, so Vax made an offering to the Matron of Ravens and she accepted... whatever that means. Think of it this way, Kash Gave Vax the opportunity to Offer himself. It's one thing for the Matron to let a resurrection spell go through after all, it's another thing for Vax to just shout into the void expecting something to happen without any magic.

So the Matron of Ravens (aka the Raven Queen) is the goddess of the transition between life and death and also fate. There's a reason Vax can see her, but I won't spoil it. Those golden lines are the threads of fate. Vax's fate was connected to Vex. Now it's not anymore. Now it's connected to the Matron. What does that mean going forward? You'll have to wait and see.

Vax offered his life for his sister's, and the Matron accepted; but he had to be tested before becoming her champion. Once he accepted death, she awakened the armour. (Vestiges have three states: dormant, awakened, exalted.) Vax had Boots of Haste long before this, they bundled the effect into the vestige. Amusing note, the pokeball was originally Purvan's, and contained his wolf companion; he ended up guarding the forests around Whitestone. Beholders (the second most dangerous monster, under dragons) are trademarked, so they had to tweak the monster for the show. They fought it before finding the sarcophagus, that was why Vex's hp was so low when the trap hit her. Also, Zhara was never this antagonistic. She flirted with Vex on their first visit, and forged an Arrow of Dragonslaying for her after the Conclave attacked. I'm pretty sure I can still count the number of reactors who recognised Ripley on one hand. Would you believe there are cosplayers that have already made their own versions of the Deathwalker's Ward, complete with glowy bits?

it's interesting you ask to learn more about Scanlan's character... there's a reason. His story is very quietly being told in little scenes and quick exchanges. It starts to pick up in a bit, but keep in mind how little we all really know about him. oh yeah, even Trinket the bear gets a hardcore tragic origin story lol During the real campaign, Liam O'Brien, the actor that plays Vax, was going through a painful part of life dealing with his mother passing. It pushed him to a very dark place and the game was one of the few things that kept him going. When the whole thing with Vex dying and the Matron of Ravens came up, Liam was very uncomfortable at first but soon enough, leaned into it. Through playing Vax going through his issues and learning to accept death as part of life (which is how he defeated Purvon in his dream fight), Liam was able to find some healing of his own. The game and his dearest friends were there for him during his darkest time.

I am honestly very happy to find someone else who loathes Scanlan as much as I used to -I was quite disturbed by how eagerly people were defending him despite some of the absolutely disgusting and gross things he said and did (like you say, a walking SA case). And that is despite the animated show toning him down a thousand percent. I almost rage quit watching the first campaign after an extremely disturbing scene with an unclothed female prisoner who had suffered horrible torture, and yet people kept brushing scenes like that off. Thankfully Scanlan does grow and mellow out as a character and by the end I didn't hate him any longer, though he was far from my favourite -but I do enjoy some of his interactions with other characters once he stops being so gross. But early campaign Scanlan is pretty much the worst a character could possibly be.

Yeah that’s fair; scanlan kind of has a bit of a mineta thing going in the show. While he was a perverted little deviant in the table top it felt…less abrasive to me there? Concentrating all of this deviant behavior into a smaller story line makes it punch harder. Plus having interacted with my own fair share of unpleasant pervs I can see how he would be a hard character to stomach.

  • @Dotterelly

I feel like it was easier for a lot of people to ignore Scanlan's behaviour during the campaign, because it was spread out a lot more around the fights and quests so it wasn't as in your face, plus it was recognised as playing into tropes around bards, and mostly people remembered Sam's great improvised singing rather than the character's bad behaviour. Plus he's often in the position of comic relief, which hides how bad his behaviour is from many people. I hope you're not getting too much flak about it. He's an interesting character when he gets some actual development, I mean I never grew to like him much but I did at least understand him better.
