YEY!!!! My whole 2 braincells came in handy this time! its just a cliche writing trope for any male character who sleeps around a lot, even Tony Stark make a joke about it in the Iron Man franchise hahaha
@wiredjerk

@@WeeLassReacts It is a trope, but the way it came about was such out of left field that it worked. Especially in the campaign, because remember, they have a shape shifting dragon after them too, and so when they have to make insight checks to see what’s going on with the other person you never know what to expect. By the time they got to the bedroom scene everybody except for Sam Riegel had an idea about what was going on, and Sam caught on technically before Scanlan did in the middle of it, so he still had to play as the character would lol. A little payback from Matt Mercer, who they always loved to mess with whenever they could.

I can just imagine the conversation Sam had with her. So, as you know, you will eventually be revealed to be my daughter, however before that we will be singing a song together about masturbation...
I'm with you, no amount of showers or therapy will ever make the scars from that final scene fade. The battle against Kevdak, however, was an absolutely satisfying treat for the eyeballs. And it was even crazier in the actual campaign. Grog was down to 1 hp before Vex called him into the amulet, saving him. Then he launched himself from 30 feet in the air and delivered the killing blow with a perfectly timed natural 20. Grog then got knocked out due to fall damage from hitting the ground. The audience was giving him a standing ovation, it was glorious.

Even better - he made his attack reckless, which means he rolls with advantage (roll 2 dice, take the highest). He rolled a 1 (which is an automatic failure) and a 20 (which is a critical success and does extra damage).

In a watch along, Sam Riegel, Scanlan's voice actor/ show producer/writer/acting director, said that this was the actor who played Kaylee's first voice acting job. So he was in the studio with her explaining that for that scene she would be playing a young woman who was trying to seduce her father, played by him, and these parts were written by him. Oh, and he watched this series with his own kids.

@@WeeLassReacts Matt their DM said that the only reason the Herd agreed that Grog did win was because he got the last hit on Kevdak, finishing their fight. The rules were that one of them had to win, not how, so in the end with both sides throwing in everything they got and Grog getting the winning hit, the Herd agreed that he'd won legitimately. If someone else got the hit they wouldn't have been as impressed, and would have kept fighting.
*"I'M Daddy???"* XD You totally called it, though just how similar they made 'em look helped a lot.
The campaign played Kaylee’s reveal a little better in that Scanlan did 100% of the flirting and pick up lines while she just kept not engaging. Scanlan leaned hard into the horny bard/fuckboy cliches and she basically just let Scanlan hang himself with his own sleazy, creepy behavior by doing the reveal after he’d spent a considerable amount of time, and money, trying to do a pick up artist routine on someone that’d clearly not been interested in anything more than conversation.

That's not quite true. Taliesin (who plays Percy), played a dragonborn about whom we know little in that oneshot, and made Percy afterwards when it became a campaign. That, and the fact that Taliesin was brought in partly because he was experienced player in their circle, may be why we got such a very deep backstory that Matt was able to work with.
😅😅😅She's a Shorthalt. They don't do things by halves. They're always gonna go for the option that has the most ~drama~
My favourite episode of the season. Action was truly epic in this one and of course reval at the end.
The SECOND you started warming to Scanlan this season I was waiting for this. Hoo boy. His arc in the original campaign is honestly incredible, and this is a cornerstone of it. Lets Go.
*starts video and thinks of particular scene of Pike calling out for Grog* oh noooooo nope Hamish is WAYYYY too far away. This will not do at all. The way Kevdak got defeated was exactly how Travis Willingham (Grog) described it in his "How do you want to do this?" moment. It took Sam Riegel WAYYYYY too long to figure out Kayliee was Scanlan's daughter in the real campaign. Highly recommend finding the scene and enjoying his cluelessness while everyone else is dying laughing.,

I love that the cry of "Vox Machina! Fuck! Shit! Up!" is a direct quote from the campaign. It's such a perfect moment for the hero to give some eloquent speech, or even something short but wildly profound. But Travis, playing Grog, understood that the most poignant thing poor, dumb Grog would be able to think of was "fuck shit up."

So… Did we enjoy your reaction? Oh, yes. Yes, we did. 😂😂😂 Btw, it was like this at the table as well… Matt let Sam seduce/be seduced by his own daughter, and Sam was also unaware of her existence. Matt introduced her based on Scanlan’s very sexually active backstory.

It's fun watching you suffer under that great assumption. :-) Thanks for the reactions to this series!
15:23 every critter whenever the Raven Queen shows up. One specific instance in particular.
9:19 And there's the exact reason why I keep watching reactions to this particular episode. To revisit the joy of this specific moment as the glorious realization of what's about to happen dawns. Edit: Not to mention 10:36. Transcendent, ain't it? :)
The YT video "The Legend of Vox Machina S2 - Table to Screen - The Kill Box" is a great watch and only 3 minutes. That's my recommendation
Once upon a time, Matthew Mercer described a thought for playing a bard where, in battle, the bard would be almost conducting the battle, like a conductor would an orchestra. I love that they brought that to animated life with how Scanlan performs while they battle, and how perfectly that adds the soundtrack as well as visual reason and it sbaisbaixbsakqoq9ohhhhhh its just so good for so many reasons.
The poke-drop was my most looked forward to moment to see animated! The moment they announced the Kickstarter for this, my team at work (most of em are critters, too) all agreed this part would definitely be in the show
Ya just made me die with laughter at the end there, almost the same reaction as I had when I listened to that moment in the stream!!
13:02 in the table top the DM (Matt Mercer) asked “how do you want to do this?” (It means when you deal enough damage to tell your final attack) Travis Willingham (Grog’s voice and character) wanted to do his final attack with Laura Bailey (Vex’s voice and character) and how well it worked on there it worked in this episode it was amazing to watch
Speaking of missed foreshadowing, I'm surprised you haven't picked up on the hints that Grog will be able to fly.
The Westruun arc is my favourite of campaign 1 for how Travis chose to play Grog’s character in a way that made sense for who the half-giant was as a person, culminating in the bloody brilliant “VOX MACHINA, FUCK SHIT UP!!” that he roared when everything went down.
The animators and cast did a watch party style commentary for each episode of both seasons on twitch, they talk about the art and how and why they made the choices they did.
I know you had other things on your mind when it was teased this episode, but I can't wait to see your reaction to the flashback that shows us how they all turned into cows!! 🐮

The Kevdak fight is interesting because it's technically a fight that he doesn't break the rules on. Nowhere did they say he was gonna take the Gauntlets off, so of course he's going to do what he's allowed to in order to make an example of Grog. The party makes a good stand, but the Herd is huge. Vox Machina made a small dent in their numbers, and then the tide shifted against them. Grog's last ditch hit was what saved them from all being killed. The other important thing to note is that Kevdak is still stronger than Grog, both physically and toughness speaking. He can take more of a beating than Grog can. Funny detail from the campaign. Grog's dad (who was killed by Kevdak & the cause of the "for Strongjaw" line) is named....Stonejaw Strongjaw. Poor Vax. He's been avoiding talking to the Matron for 7 episodes and she's like "will you please return my calls?"
You set yourself up for this. 😂 No way to escape it.

First day of work. Never met this man before. Hadn’t seen the stream. No biggie.

Told you Kevdak was going to make you upset. I should have known Kaylie's plan with Scanlan would scar you even worse!
In the live play the For Strongjaw line had a bit more impact cause it is highly suggested that Kevdak killed Grog's father...his name was Stonejaw Strongjaw...and I agree we need a LP of Shorthalt songs
@Brasswatchman
Жыл бұрын
Tbf, that was also implied in the series when Kevdak badmouthed Grog's father.
I love how they managed to make Scanlan a part of the fight, even though his support role in tabletop combat is so difficult to visualise. He buffs the party, de-buffs the enemy, and does general battlefield control - none of which is easy to _show._ 17:25 - _"…and then I disguised us all as cows!"_ This is a reference to a big fan-favourite moment in the early campaign, where they were trying to lure in a Roc that was preying on livestock. They fought it off, and when it fled, they took to the air to fly after it - all while still looking like cows! Many fans had hoped that it would be immortalised in this show, but they couldn't do that to the poor animators, so this mention is (almost) the only reference to it. (There is also a background tapestry in Greyskull Keep in season 1.) 17:39 - *“This is a lot more of Scanlan than I really… wanted to see tonight.”* Yeah, but in fairness, _any_ amount of Scanlan is more than you want to see, so that's not really saying much. 😁 Interesting tidbit about Dr. Dranzel and his Spectacular Travelling Troupe: in the original campaign, it was part of Scanlan's backstory that he knew and had toured with Dranzel's troupe, before meeting up with Vox Machina. It happened like this: When the players of _Critical Role_ decided to keep playing, after the initial one-shot adventure, Sam Riegel found himself having to come up with an actual backstory for the throwaway joke character he had made. Since "Scanlan Shorthalt" has the initials S.S. and is a musician, he decided to add some parallels to Marshall Mathers, the rapper Eminem. Thus, like Eminem was discovered by Dr. Dre, Scanlan was mentored by Dr. Dranzel, and in a happy coincidence, when Matt decided to surprise Sam with Scanlan's daughter, he named her Kaylie, which rhymes with Mathers' daughter Hailie - even though Matt was unaware that Sam had drawn the parallel between Scanlan and Eminem.
What's really strange is that a lot of the things that seem like foreshadowing randomly happened live in the campaign and weren't planned or shaped into a narrative at all. The way Grog defeated Kevdak was just something that happened in the chaos of battle and only worked by sheer chance along with Grog's curiosity with Vex's magical necklace which was a coincidental moment of role play improv from an earlier session so nobody could have predicted that it would work out like it did, to say nothing of the randomness of Vex ending up with the flying broom.
I think if she knew the lyrics to the whole song "Make the Bald man cry" she would be even more uncomfortable.
@Brasswatchman

Yeah, maybe she should wait on that one... take it a bit at a time, you know?
3:35 nowhere in the rules did it say the fight had to be fair...
Kaylie both knew that was the best/easiest way to get Scanlan to where she could talk to him or possibly kill him, and was also proving to herself that he's a narcissist who will just bed anyone without caring who they are really or what their story might be, that's basically the 'why'. It's a disgusting/uncomfortable situation because as far as Kaylie is concerned it proves Scanlan is a kind of disgusting guy who does things like lie to people and leave them to deal with any consequences of a hookup on their own.
@sandpiperr
Жыл бұрын
I agree. She knew exactly what she was doing, but the fact that her plan worked perfectly and he didn't think this could be anything other than hookup, I'm sure, in her mind justified that he was exactly the type of asshole he seemed like from the stories.
I FELT that psychic damage you gave yourself with that daddy comment. The animation for the Kevdak fight is just *chef's kiss* They're so good at spreading the action around the entire party and making everything flow. The action never stops, but it never becomes a jumbled hard-to-follow mess, which is something many animated AND live action fight scenes with large groups struggle to achieve. She did it Like That because, well, she IS Scanlan's daughter after all (I agree, there are about a thousand ways she might have handled this that weren't "seduce your own father" Kaylie is...not without her own personality quirks, that's for sure. I refer once again to the common DnD adage, no well adjusted person becomes an adventurer :p LOL I'm stealing "I'm going to run myself through a car wash" immediately. Another great reaction! I look forward to these so much.
It works as foreshadowing with Grog but no actually in the campaign the first thing Grog said was that he wanted to try it.
I guess you could call Scanlan screaming: “IM DADDY?!” a bard’s lament.

Well, I mean, that's Matt's job.
3:40 I've thought about that a bit. I wonder if maybe Kevdak _can't_ remove the gauntlets, just like Vax can't remove his armor. Of course, he could still refrain from using its powers during the fight... but let's face it, it's pretty clear by this point just what kind of a man he is. If you can call him that.
The challenge to single combat, the call to VM, the pokeball tactic and final blow... at dawn we plan, we're all cows... all from the stream. This was one of the most epic fights of the entire campaign. It was so important that they got Wil Wheaton to shake Matt's hand before the game that night, hoping his dice curse (his predilection for rolling natural ones breaks both maths and physics) would infect him. Kaylie's reveal (minus the nudity and bondage) also from the stream, though it originally happened the night before the conclave attack on Emon. Aw, you didn't listen to the whole song at the end... Kevdak's balls are too small. Rip out his windpipe, try to shove it up his ass before he stops gurgling for breath.

You know it’s really sad that Scanlan leaves the party to die at the end of the season after all of his character growth.
Congratz on being one of the only people I've seen pick up on Kaylee being his daughter so fast! And yeah, the game didn't take it that far. They did go upstairs to do the nasty but they were only drinking when she told Scanlan who she was. This would be a move she pulled though, now looking back at her character. She was always one of my fav NPCs. That fight was CRAZY and they were so scared for it too. In the end, Grog only had 1 HP when we went into the necklace and rolled a nat 20 on the way down to kill Kevdak. It was amazing!
Also I think that the scene where Grog gets all swol is the first graphical representation of his sub-class the Berserker. In game the Berserker is contentious because it is a punishing class to play. While playing you can only do so many things when it is you turn, the berserker lets you attack more often but it comes at a cost exhaustion. Now exhaustion is very punishing. The first couple of levels are bad but not the worst. It's when you get to the third level, that is when the death spiral starts. And then at 6 levels you just die. That's it just dead!
"Take the knuckles off, it's not fair otherwise." I don't think "fair" is really in his repertoire. You just have to kinda have Hammish already in your lap when you watch these things.
Grog succeeded in the one thing every Shoenen powerhouse protagonist failed in...he found where REAL strength comes from. According to Eda, Dragon Ball's become nothing more than a series where glowing men prostate themselves while screaming a lot to "let their inner beast out"
Wait, we all seen Scalan's nuts in season 1. Twice!
"I met a boy who was just my type" "Shippy-i-shippy-i-o~" "But in the bed couldn't satisfy" "Shippy-i-shippy-i-o~" "Ooooooh he try, but left me hanging dry!"

No, she isn't, though. She doesn't go around chasing tail in the campaign or anything. She did that specifically to shame him and show that he basically just is down to have a one night stand carelessly with anyone, not caring anything about who they might be. She was proving (or so she felt) what a scoundrel and narcissist she believes he is. The fact that he didn't even get warned off that she looked so like him, bother to even talk to her first about who she was and what she likes, etc. She also knew it was a way to get him to go off with her alone, away from his friends,, without even a BIT of suspicion or thought that it could be bad, considering her original intent was to probably kill him outright. It was very calculated.

@@neintales1224 I’m mostly poking fun at people calling her strategy weird. I think they share a similar type of thought process, as in they have a similar type of out of the box thinking, but not all of the same… hobbies? I think if you look at Scanlan there’s about 20,000 ways to confront and shame him that don’t involve seduction, and probably even some things that might be more damaging to his character than what was intended. Even if this was the *only* way to do it, most people don’t make the logical jump to “let me just go to college early and sign up with my dad’s old traveling troupe specifically to seduce and shame him”. It was a weird plan in and out of campaign, and between this and our other exposures to her in the Campaign I do actually think she’s similar to him in a lot of ways.

Yeah I don't know why it's so hard for reactors to understand that this wasn't a plan to finally meet the dad she never knew...it was a revenge plan against the dad who, in her mind, abandoned her before she was even born. She WANTED to traumatize him. She did it this way because, based on what she knew about him, and the fact that he had been flirting with her a little in episode 9, she knew it'd work! Plus, the fact that it did work perfectly, and he never for a second considered that what was going on could be anything besides a hookup, just solidified in her mind that he was exactly the kind of creep she'd always assumed he was. Yes, there's a lot of logical leaps in there. Scanlan didn't know she existed and thus had no reason to assume that a woman who asked him to escort her upstairs might be his secret daughter when, generally, yeah an invitation like that would be a come on! However, that kind of irrational thinking is totally understandable for someone who never knew their father because he was a cad who disappeared after a one night stand. It completely makes sense that she'd blame him and be angry at him, even it's maybe not totally his fault he didn't know about her, inside she's still a child with the emotional wound of spending her whole life feeling like her father didn't want her. That kind of trauma is not something you think about rationally.

Ehhhh... maybe she should take her time with that. Hitting the car wash two days in a row gets expensive.
How are you feeling now that there are now only two episodes left to react to?
I would think Scanlan would NORMALLY be into a woman in a bedroom calling him Daddy.

As with all things, context is key.
All I'm going to say is this. Keep the car wash ready.
Now that the daughter reveal is out, Sam stole his backstory from, rapper M and M. He just swapped letters. M n M is S n S, discovered by Dr. Dra or Dr. Dre, has a daughter named Kaylee instead of Hayley. There is another parallel I wont spoil in case it comes up.

The daughter part was pure coincidence. Sam had no idea Scanlan had a daughter, and Matt had no idea Sam had modeled Scanlan after Eminem. Matt chose the name randomly. It just worked out.

This was a very good episode 😮 with a very creepy twisted ending.😵 I'll see you at the car wash.🛀 I don't think that any of us were ready for that. If you like good potential fight scene music, listen to Rammstein - Du Hast

Something that really bugged me here was the the herd have been terrorizing this town for weeks and now everything's cool? Are _all_ the townsfolk dead? It just seems to be a lot to just handwave away.

It's true. Though I tend to think that the high casualties the Herd takes in this and the following episode goes some way towards resolving that karmic debt.

@@WeeLassReacts That was my impression too. I like to think whoever was left bugged out during the battle against Vox Machina or - better yet - when they were all getting drunk afterwards.
It sucks that somebody spoiled that Scanlan had a kid for you. In the campaign this scene body slammed Sam Riegel (Scanlan) into the ground and everyone was gasping with shocked laughter the entire time while crawling under the tables and hiding in their shirts lol. He had NO idea she existed, Matt Mercer is an evil genius. In the animation they made it slightly more apparent.

No one spoiled it, it was just super obvious hahaa it comes up in a LOT of media if a guy sleeps around that he eventually gets approached by a kid he didn't know he had

@@WeeLassReacts oh, you said in the video that you thought you saw a comment that said that Scanlan flirted with his daughter at some point. But yeah they did give some more hints in the animation to make it a bit less out of no where lol. Makes sense. I'll tell you, as someone who watched the campaign, having to sit through this whole fiasco watching it unfold was so incredibly painful you don't even know lol. Just non stop cringe the second she showed up knowing what was happening.😬🤣
I dunno why Matt (the DM) decided that this was a good way to reveal to one of the players that they have a child, but bold move fucked up but bold

That’s literally something that any DM would do, especially to bards that in-game have slept with a lot of people. That’s the normal trope, it’s not that f-ed up compared to say, slaughtering a whole village or your characters parents dying to dragons.

Well, you can't argue it isn't an effective means of showing the downsides of Scanlan's foolhardy ways... not to mention an excellent catalyst for further character growth.

I mean if I thought of it and was a DM to a player who decided to play his character as someone who slept around a lot, I'd totally do it! So I get it!
Sad thing is the next episode they cut out one of Scanlans best lines when he is talking to Kaylie. It was hands down one of the best moments of campaign one, and some damn good improve on Sams part. Of course in the campaign all of this happened ages before this point.

@@Brasswatchman Among my faults, of which there is many, ego is among them and the fact that you are of my blood makes me love you even more.
This is one of my rare complaints about the show. They really suck at times at subtlety. There are a fair number of moments that would have been really amazing surprise moments that get diluted by heavy handed foreshadowing. Like in the campaign the reveal of Kaylie was so much more shocking because before that she was just this other roguish gnome bard who Scanlan started flirting with. But in the show there are a lot of little moments which while not outright saying it are rather blatant in their foreshadowing. Same happened with Vex’s death earlier on. There were so many red flags being thrown up with all the sudden excess worry from Vax and Vex’s assurance that it would be fine that made it clear something was going to happen. Doesn’t ruin the show or anything but I wish it had a bit of a lighter touch with the hinting and foreshadowing so these big reveal moments could have had more impact.
You act like this is the first time you've seen a beloved character get stabbed through the stomach. Edit: You’re a Bleach fan for crying out loud.

Oh I know but Bleach characters had thr thickest plot armour ever until the final Arc, unless they were bad guys. Let's be real, they'd get stabbed through the stomach and walk it off 🤣
You should really watch the original live stream... Grog's insult to his uncle is much funnier.
Too bad your viewers spoiled this episode in advance to you
