I THOUGHT SO!!!! I wonder if he was actually trying to aim for FULL Irish or a little mix of both? I can imagine he'd know how weird it would be for someone from Scotland or Ireland to be able to immediately PLACE where the accent is from, it keeps us all guessing and makes the character seem more wimsical that way

Fun Fact: Percy’s hand prosthetic/device is called Diplomacy. It was a glove in the original campaign, cause healing is OP sometimes, but here it’s how he dealt with the Orthax hole. It’s one of Percy’s most work in progress devices, and fittingly enough, it works as often as not. *sigh* Just like diplomacy.

love the naming for Percy's weapons

So fun story about this episode. The bird in the beginning that gets torn apart by plants was actually based off of Dagon, the bird owned by Matt Mercer (the Dungeon Master/Creative Director of Critical Role) and Marisha Ray (Keyleth's voice actor). At the time, they included him as a bit of an easter egg. However, Dagon ended up passing away while season 2 was being made and they forgot about the fact that he was in this episode. So fast forward to Matt and Marisha watching this episode, and then suddenly being reminded about Dagon.......by watching him get torn apart by plants.

Yeah, I'm not ashamed to say that I have read quite a few Polyam Machina and Polyam the other campaigns adventuring party groups fanfiction... The majority of the ones that I've read have been VERY good!

Apparently the bird that got ripped up was actually drawn based on Keyleth and the DM’s bird… who actually died between concept art and release. They ended up forgetting about the scene and it was apparently morbidly hilarious for them.

Wow, this popped up in my feed two minutes after it dropped. Garmelie is voiced by Billy Boyd, (Pippen). They have said that their goal is to get all of the hobbits. Dominic Monaghan voiced Archibald Desnay in Season 1. Be sure to go back and listen to the song sung over the end credits.

I do, however, love that Grog finally destroyed Crraven Edge even if it did cost him his strength. Also, I love the Fey jelly spore acid trip, and since you were wondering, Garmelie is voiced by Billy Boyd, the Scottish actor who played Pippin in _The Lord of the Rings._

Taking into account, how well she reated to this episode, I can't wait for things... to come.

During the trip scene, Trinket was voiced by Cheech Marin, who was part of a very-popular-in-the-US stoner comedy duo Cheech & Chong in the seventies. (I grew up listening to one of their albums.)

Pike rolling her eyes at Scanlan's naughty nurse joke is actually kind of interesting as, as I understand it, she actually liked his dirty humor in the campaign. Like, it was actually one of the things that endeared him to her. Interesting that they changed that. Obligatory fake spoiler: Fortunately, you won't have to worry about this long term as it's mostly just emotional build up to make it hurt that much more when he gives his life to protect her. That's the problem with betrayals, they never come from the enemy...

I think her reaction was less about the joke being dirty than it was about his making light of a genuine compliment she was paying him, which goes back to her comments in ep. 6 about him lacking sincerity. He uses humor to deflect from vulnerable moments, but he's never going to get anywhere with Pike until he stops joking around and lets her in.

Ahh Chaotic Neutral, arguably the alignment of Deadpool. The alignment of those that follow their heart, enjoy freedom, and don't swing ether way to good or evil. Not to be confused with Chaotic Stupid, which likes to kill because "lol so random".

😂 I kind of love that the floof that gets torn to shreds is a reference to Matt & Marisha's (now passed) conure. They hysterically laugh every time they see the episode. The prints at the end of each episode are a bit unique. They're called color scripts and basically give a color pallet to the episodes so that the animators and 3D folks are all using the same colors.

The faun/satyr was voiced by Billy Boyd. Pippin.

A dark but funny tidbit on this episode, the bird that gets torn apart at the beginning was made to look like Matt Mercer and Marisha Ray's bird, Dagon, as a joke. But during production Dagon passed away and they had forgotten about that scene until they watched the final product. Matt says it's just one of those things that's so macabre that you can't help but laugh.

She's lesbian. It's referenced in episode 104 of campaign 2 and she's listed that way on the wiki.

I appreciate you showing us what your shirt said. It makes it easier to actively watch the video because I'm not constantly wondering what it says and thinking "ugh, just move that way a little so I can read it!" So thanks :)

So, to be clear, Scanlan in campaign was A) initially designed to be "the worst" and B) given way more time to develop. His romance with Pike was built up slower and we were given more time to explore why he's the way he is. He even departs from Vox Machina for a time, for reasons that are kinda spoiler-y atm. Also Pike and, if memory serves, all of Vox Machina except Grog are implied or out-right stated to be bi.

Yeah most people headcanon Grog as aromantic... So definitely still a part of the lgbtq+ community but he's pretty straight... Also Scanlan isn't pan in campaign one... Or at least that was a change that was made WAY later on in the campaign. I am doing a rewatch of campaign one and in the early campaign when Scanlan mentioned sexual things he exclusively only talks about women... so he's VERY much straight at the beginning of the campaign, at least. I'm pretty sure the only sexual interest in men that he explicity mentions is when he was drugged by a love potion to like Percy in a one shot... Which does eventually fade so I don't think he actually was actually interested in Percy.... But other than that I really DON'T remember Scanlan explicitly stating that he was pan/bi in the campaign... Not like he does in the animated show. But honestly it's a change that I am completely fine with and I think really really fits his character.

Look Mosco, the truth is... Scanlan's arc is about his emptiness that he was talking to Kam (the AndroSphynx). That's why everyone is saying that you gonna like him better later on. Pike is part of the purity that he need in his life, but that's not it, there's gonna be more in this season. (And I'll end it up here and be waiting to see you react to it 'couse it's awesome)

I recently watched a Bards Lament and I experienced emotions a fictional character didn’t give me in a long time. Scanlan is my favorite out of this group.

I love how conflicted she is! Its very intertaining

Best episode reaction so far. It's super funny.. but also.. Actually made me think about others' way through life, and very real romantic struggles and the emotions with that, which I'd never quite considered before.... Thank you for that.

Fun fact, in the original campaign. The sword wasn't broken. It was banished via plane shift, it is unclear where. Suspected to be in the Dread Emperor's realm or Astral plane.

I'm pretty sure the characters know where it was sent, because they refer to the pocket plane being empty.

The song in this episode is a reference to a running joke at the game table in Campaign 2. Whenever Matt would narrate, "You make your way..." the players would sing the line, "Makin' my way" from Vanessa Carlson's "1000 Miles."

Surprised there was no comment on Pike's country singing.

Folks have pointed out, I think quite rightly, that in the animated, Grog's relationship with Craven Edge is a strong allegory for addiction. You know it's wrong, but it deludes you into thinking you need it. That you can't do without it. And that each time you make a bad decision for it, it'll be the last one, or it won't be so bad. Following episodes hold a lot of recovery allegory, too.

In the actual campaign, Grog actually died because of growing over reliant on Craven Edge. Fortunately, they were able to resurrect him and instead of destroying Craven Edge, it was sealed away in a pocket dimension where it would never see the light of day. I really liked the change they made in this show because it really makes Craven Edge have more impact even after it’s gone. Grog was warned about what would happen by wielding such dark powers, and he paid the ultimate price. Reversing what what Craven Edge did to Grog’s strength will be a lot more difficult than simply reviving him in a campaign.

That's one of the dangers of this series. In the campaign, you can have a character die every episode, and it's still tense because of the dice rolls. In here, if you have too many deaths where the character just comes back, it starts to feel like plot armor. So I'm glad they made that change. Plus it gives purpose to the Groon fight, since that didn't have any real point in the campaign.

@@cryofpaine I mean that's not true, The Groon fight meant something in the Campaign too (I agree with you about the too many deaths part) A) The Fight was super awesome, there need be no other justification than that lol. B) It was still a learning experience for Grog RP wise even if nothing purely mechanical came out of it, and C) Spoilers for the whole of Campaign 1, don't read unless you've watched the Campaign: It Gave them a connection with someone in the Temple of Kord early on for the End plot where they were going to have to try to find the Gods home planes to ask for help. I guarantee you that if they had chosen to pursue it, Groon would have been their way of finding Kord's home to ask him for help stopping Vecna. As it was they only asked the 3 they did because they felt it was taking too much time and they had to risk it with only 3.

So it really had no point other than being a cool thing that happened. Yes they *could have* done something. But they didn't. This way, it has far more meaning. It actually served a purpose in the narrative.

I didn't notice this until I watched your video. When in the beginning Kiki was like "hello little floof, you're the prettiest thing I've ever seen" and then it gets eaten and she's makes that sad sound. It reminded me of that meme of the girl playing the Last of Us and the rabbit got shot with an arrow. 🤣. Also. In the campaign I remembered how much Percy LOVED the Fey and he was so excited to go and he ended up having the worst time and he failed at his save to keep the memories so he didn't remember going to the Fey realm and Scanlan modified his memory of going to the Fey realm but in a Scanlan version. Absolutely loved it 💀

Well, good thing that business with Pike and Scanlan was all just a misdirect and Pike ended up marrying one of the Chroma Conclave's ancient dragons. Truly an epic love match without equal that was.

In the real campaign, Garmelie drew a portrait of them that they hung up in their house. It was offensively hilarious. Pike commissioned it. Also, when the plants attacked them for not thinking positively, Percy had to compliment and talk down the plants to get them to stop attacking.

Additionally fans created fan art of that portrait so you can look up "Garmilles' portrait of Vox Machina" on Google and it will show you the portrait. It's great stuff.

When you were addressing that you are struggling with the Scan man and Pike, majority of us were: "C'mon, its gonna happen. Let it go. It's adorable" =)

I have to say the same thing to both sides: not to get angry when someone you assumed to be straight to turn out to be gay, not to get angry when someone you assumed to be gay to turn out straight. There is a lot of diversity in the whole of Critical Role, all seasons. I suppose it is best to take things as they come.

Next episode. My favorite character who loves Theatrics, but hates the theater.

Pike might be playing for both teams, but she does appear to have a general preference for men overall. She's made comments about having visited brothels when the rest of Vox Machina weren't around, and she's outright called Beauregard "Beau" Lionett (despite her traditionally-masculine first name, she's a woman; her parents had wanted a boy when she was born) hot during the (most likely non-canon) Vox Machina vs. Mighty Nein one-shot.

Appropriately enough, the voice of Trinket in the Fey Trip is Cheech Marin of Cheech and Chong fame.

Oh yeah. Dagon. Marisha & Matt's pet bird who that bird was based on. And died shortly before episode aired and they forgot about it.

I've been waiting for the Pike and Scanlan scene and Mosco's reaction did not disappoint XD

Merry's actor Played Archibald in season 1, Pippin's actor plays Garmelie in season 2; I wonder if they'll nab the other pair of hobbits in the next two seasons. The satyr drew Grog with bulging eyes, buck teeth and a tiny penis, a missed opportunity. Enchanted items like Craven Edge are harder to destroy than that, it never took Grog's strength, and it's (too) blatently obvious when he'll get it back; but hey, we get to hear Ashley sing! (Even if it's country.) We knew from the start of the stream that Scanlan longed for the true love of a fellow gnome; we didn't know until the wrap-up after the VM campaign that Pike used have a crush on Percy, but believed it would never work out. Of *course* they got Cheech to voice Trinket in the trip scene. Dragons of different colours don't usually work together. Thordak claimed Emon, Umbrasyl claimed Westruun, Vorugal claimed... a place we'll probably never see, due to it being from Tiberius' storyline... but it could be an opportunity to show us the wild elves of Lyrengorn instead? (Both locations are in the frozen north, and it'd be nice to meet some elves that aren't arseholes). Raishan wasn't doing it for territory, and Brimscythe was younger than the others, so who knows. I've always suspected that, if everything had gone as planned and the conclave ruled all of Tal'Dorei, the others would've teamed up against Thordak before he started taking them down, one by one.

Oh, Mosco. If you are so worried about Pike just blushing at Scanlan, I can't fanthom your reaction to his death and her heartfelt speech over his body. And well. Wonder which pairing will get the first interparty kiss... Hmmm..... (Autocorrect wanted to change kiss to kids. I mean, well, dunno? We do get to see ✨some✨ kids by the end of this season, but eh... Doesn't turn out well for anyone involved.)

"I wish Pike batted for the other team!" Just you wait for the Mighty Nein hen! It goes: Gay, Gay, Bi/pan, Queer, Aro-Ace, Unconfirmed, Unconfirmed, Unconfirmed but probably straight

To be fair, though, most of Vox Machina were also not straight. Vax, Scanlan, and Vex were confirmed to be bi, Ashely Johnson said that Pike had gone to brothels which implies she's probably at least hetero-flexible if not bi, and Keyleth is Demisexual. Grog is the only one confirmed to be completely heterosexual, but also aromatic. And Percy...has been the subject of much speculation, a lot of it probably the fact that his VA came out as bi at a fan event. About all we can say is he definitely likes women, but we don't know if that's the only gender he's attracted to.

Remember some things I mentioned earlier in the season: (1) it's interesting that you love Pike but hate Scanlan; (2) the people around him find Scanlan's jokes more annoying for being incessant than offensive for being sexual; and (3) you're going to learn to understand why Scanlan has trouble being serious throughout the season (and beyond, if they adapt some important campaign moments in future seasons). Particularly, episodes 9 through 12 will give you quite a bit more insight into how Scanlan feels and what insecurities drive his decisions.

I'm laughing at your pain there. Listen to Hamish, Hamish is wise.

The reason the fey realm is reacting so strongly to Vax ia indeed the vestige he is wearing. The Matron of Ravens holds her court in the Shadowfell, which is basically the polar opposite to the Fey Realm. as much as the fey realm is caotic, vibrant colourfull and magical, the Shadowfell is dark, dreary, gothic and a bit emo... which suits Vax to a tee actually... Liam O'Brien tends to play emotionally charged and gloomy characters. point being however that the fey realm sees Vax as an intruder.

Orym is the only well adjusted one I think and maybe buddy but that was a one off so maybe he was too but we didn't get too deep a dive into him

20:23 Keyleth might not be Australian, but that was quite the Technicolor yawn... Also, that "Makin' My Way" song is by far my favorite moment of the season - and the series thus far.

are we doing the "fake" spoilers here too? - vax takes a spa day and find jesus after taking a bath. - umbrasyl (the black dragon) also joins for the spa day and gets an enema to cleanse is acidic stomach. - grog gets his strength back from the power of friendship. - scanlan travels to the future where he has grandchildren. - by the end of the season thordak (the red dragon) gets a redemption arc and quits to open a nursery.

When I was watching this one my first thought was: Mosco's not gonna be happy about this. The destruction of Craven Edge seemed a little abrupt but given the limited time they had in the season it's understandable. Not that I wanted it around any longer anyway. Really enjoyed Grog being a limp noodle tho. Reminded me of The Princess Bride after Wesley had been "mostly dead" all day. Again Keyleth is just adorable but I gotta admit between this and Kingdoms of Amalur I think I've got a thing for gnome girls.

Scanlan is my favorite character of the Vox Machina. But I know what is to come.

Honestly, Grog's the only character in Vox Machina confirmed to be straight. Pike is the only other one who never shows any same sex attraction, but Ashley was gone for most of the game, and she never said Pike isn't into women so... But she does canonically go to brothels when she's apart from Vox Machina.

She did end up finding a particular dark skinned female monk strangely attractive during a certain side adventure, so there's that.

Okay so everyone puts Percy in that category too, but I've never seen anything about him confirmed! Certainly not the way Vax and Scanlan who were confirmed by their creators to be bi, or even the extent to which Vex and Pike were (which was more hinted and less explicitly "yes, they are" compared to Vax and Scanlan). So...am I missing something? Is it just because Talesin came out to fans?

@@sandpiperr Spoilers!!! mild One time Vax was talking to Kash about how his eyes being two different colors is weird and Percy commented that 'It works for me'. Then there's his general twink demeanor and his comfort/enjoyment when men are attracted to him. And some of his interactions with Vax came off as flirty (plus the bathtub scene). You can chalk it up to gaydar if you like, which admittedly might be influenced by Taliesin himself setting off our gaydar - long before he came out to the internet. Btw, Vex is explicitly bisexual, confirmed in the book Kith and Kin. Edit: Laura confirmed Vex is bisexual on twitter before the book came out.

Now we're endorsing the idea of "yeah but they just look gay!"? And would we have preferred if he was the type of douchebag who went "wtf man? Are you hitting one me?! Why would you do that? I'm not gay!!!" because a male flirted with him? If mean, if anything, that might make me think he's protesting too much! So, yeah, I'm not buying that stuff like that is confirmation Percy isn't straight because it really just sounds like stereotypes and projecting Talesin's sexuality onto his character. Not that I care if Percy is or isn't queer, I just really do not like when people blur the lines between charactor and actor. Don't get me started on the things said about Marisha Ray!

@@sandpiperr You're about a hair's breadth away from saying gaydar isn't real and us queers just want to make everything gay. There's long history of actors playing a character as queer, even if they're not allowed to say it explicitly due to censorship. We know the body language clues, and we're tired of straights gaslighting us because they're blind to it. You know what's funny about accusing people of stereotyping? It falls flat when you're talking to someone like me who is a walking stereotype. We exist. I never said Percy looks gay. That makes no sense. The assumptions about his sexuality started back when there was just Kit Bus' original portrait to go off. If you assume our perception of Percy's sexuality is solely a projection the actor's sexuality, then test that by applying it to all the characters. By that logic, we should have read Yasha and Beau as mostly straight. But we didn't. It's almost like they were so stereotypical even the straights could see it. And we clocked Cad as ace too. Acting!

There was definitely some discourse about whether or not Scanlan and Pike would make a good couple when the original campaign was airing, so you're not the only one who's not super keen on that idea. As for fake spoilers, the good news is that you won't need to worry about Scanlan getting together with Pike, since he'll get eaten and killed by one of the dragons, and that's the last we see of him.

Chaotic Neutral gives me fear 😭😭😭😭

In terms of gay representattion in the main characters, this campaign has hints of it (like Vax being bi & Scanlan being pan) but ultimately doesn't really explore that in any actual main character relationships. The next campaign (which is also getting an animated adaptation!) has the sort of representation you're looking for! P.S. I'm desperate for another season so I'm going back in time to watch reactions I haven't seen. Love your reactions!

Oh, I can't wait for you to see the twins' mom! Turns out she wasn't actually home when the dragon destroyed their village. She's been living with their father ever since, but since the twins had already left from there and weren't exactly pen pals with him after, they never found out. They just assumed she died when they saw the ruins of their house and heard about the dragon attack.

Don't think that's correct, you may be getting mixed up. Vex and Vax's mother absolutely does die in the dragon attack on Byroden, the twins were living with their father at the time but didn't receive the message about it. The woman now married to their father is fully elven.

@@jonathanblazeby9655 You must be new here. Welcome! Mosco always asks for fake spoilers in the comments to disguise genuine spoilers. And I like to have a bit of fun with that, builing off of real events in the story, but giving it a twist.

ok about the Garmelie accent - while it's fair to feel like maybe it's not a fair representation of a particular accent, there's a narrative reason why it shouldn't be (that I won't go into now because it's made clear only in the following episodes) and also it's a fantasy world so even if it was based on Irish it's not actually Irish - and to be fair I don't think it is supposed to go Irish, it only sounds like that because of the way his voice melody goes up and down like a yoyo. It's not that different from what he sounds like in the LoTR movies from what I can discern anyway...

I love how you keyed in on Grog's strength coming from his friends. It's so cool to see him transform into a pastel-colored Alicorn once he figures it out. His "magical girl" transformation is so adorable.

Pretty funny episode. The absolute dismay at you imagining Pike and Scanlan together is actually pretty funny. I will say that Percy's upbeat attitude toward the grass might have been a bit of a nod to a moment in the campaign. There is an animated version I'll like below. Also, as a side note when they originally went to the Fey Realm it was the entire group and they didn't get split. As far as for a spoiler goes all I will say is that Scanlan marries a man named Yeza next episode in order to fix Grog. Yeza has a son named Luc. "fun" fact: that bird in the beginning was designed after Matthew Mercers real life pet bird who sadly passed during production. The thing about Pike is that she's just as loud, violent and pervy as everyone else on the team, she just has her shit together so it's less obvious. She never offended by Scanlans comments or uncomfortable with them, she just gets annoyed because he's always 'on' and so rarely genuine. As for your comment about Pike batting for the other team, it probably won't be included but in the campaign Pike did mention she likes to hot up the brothels when the others aren't around so she seems to be bi as well. (really only Percy and Grog are straight) editted since Pike and Percy are not interchangable.
