Other way around, but yeah: Grog finally triggered the big Craven Edge power boost he'd been chasing since he got the sword, then died because he failed the Con save. This caused the rest of the party to stage an intervention, sever CE's tie to Grog and send it to a secret pocket plane they were the only people left alive that knew of it.

The one big rule with death on the series: Resurrection has to MATTER more than their death. Narrative has to be stronger in their favor. So literally the power of how strong their friendshps are can save their lives from shit rolls 😊

For percy's player, he did in fact make his full name that for fun. It was fun for him to see the rest of the players try to say the whole name without flubbing it up. Most gave up and wouldn't even try. As for grog, i would love for you guys to see "The best of Grog" videos, you could probably watch the first few minutes, but you would have to wait until the series ends for no spoilers. But it shows his improv with the character. Love this show and love you guys too.

Scanlan, like Keyleth, is capable of some healing magic and he showed a little bit of it at the end of S1. He is the one who provided the magic that helped keep Keyleth alive after Delilah nearly killed her. It makes sense that he would since Bards do have some access to lower level healing spells.

Bards have a little bit of everything. Clerics are the REAL healers though, Paladins are pretty good at it too, but Clerics are the goats of healing. So it makes sense Pike would prefer to heal herself. At most Scanlan could give a pick me up. In a fight he's more useful shooting lightning or punching people with his giant purple hand. In DnD you only need 1 point of healing to get back up from 0 and avoid death, so he'll heal a lot more in the game, where here healing works more realistically.

I know every single video has had comments recommending seeing certain scenes from the DnD game for comparison, but Percy giving Vex the title is a moment that absolutely must be seen. It’s a fairly subdued moment here in the animation because that’s what the story calls for, but it was buck wild in-game. No one knew Percy’s player was going to do that, and the reaction of the other players to it is the kind of thing that makes your heart soar. Oh, and it was also at a live show, so the crowd loses their god damned minds in the best way. It’s a must see moment.

For the record, the episodes you just watched are a bit off the campaign due to getting everything from the Chroma Conclave storyline into seasons 2 and 3. The party never split in the campaign but, for the sake of storytelling, they did so while still honoring certain story beats from the campaign. Going to the Fey Wild, meeting the father and unknown sister of the twins, getting the bow from Mr. "Nice Guy"...that all happened in the campaign. However, in the campaign, it was with the full team, the father had grown a better understanding of how much of a shithead he was and didn't talk back about amending the title Percy gave Vex, and there were also a group of werewolves whose leader helped fight Mr. "Nice Guy." Also, a MASSIVE change here is how Grog delt with the sword Kraven Edge. In the original, Percy took it, knew it craved blood, and gave it to Grog because it could be helpful. Later on, when the sword was getting dangerous (and after using the sword during the Sphinx's challenge and hurting Pike under different circumstances with it), he share the sword with Scanlan for a bit because they were good friends and Grog wanted to see if others could hear the same voice. Eventually, when it was time to get rid of the sword, Grog had to make a will save against the sword...and I believe he got a natural 1 and died. The group, as a whole, got together as Pike used magic to sever the sword's connection with him and Keyleth (again, the party never split in the campaign) used Plane Shift to send the sword into a plane where it can't be used again. When the sword was gone, the old Grog was back and made sure that he never grabbed a weapon that could talk to him ever again. So, again, everything happening to Grog, Scanlan, and Pike in these episodes (as well as bit in the next) are for the sake of telling a larger story in a shorter timespan while still reaching character arc story beats from the campaign.

Grog had my Favorite line in the entire Campaign 1. He was dealing with merchant and his wife Laura, who plays Vex, wanted him to haggle. He looks at her and says, "Uh, I have an intelligence of 6. I know what I am doing." Then proceeds to haggle the wrong way and overpay. No roll, that's just how he roleplayed it. She was so mad. (Base intelligence is 10, if you don't know dnd.)

The "Makin' My Way" song was Critical Role's way of including something in their streamed game. Usually, when a player mentions anything about making their way somewhere the rest of the cast will start singing "Making my way..." line from Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles". Obviously, they couldn't use that song in this show, so they created their own song to pay homage to that little bit they do. (Also, most of Scanlan's songs in the campaign took pop songs and reworked them for his spells.) Edit: And absolutely need to watch The Boys and Gen V.

Nerd!Percy is the best Percy :D We get to see a glimpse of how he might have been without the trauma, just a geeky lil guy who wanted to tinker with stuff and read books (probably still a snarky know-it-all with some darkness in there, because let's be honest, Orthax had to have something to work with in the first place. But still) It makes me happy and kicks me in the feels at the same time, I love it so much. The Fae Realm embodies abundant, rampant, unrestrained life in its wildest form. Death exists only briefly in the Fae before it is overtaken with new life (think mushrooms, rot, nothing stays "dead" for long). The The Matron of Ravens represents the antithesis of all of that, her Champion isn't welcome. 20:36: Vax's tiny little half smile here, seeing his sister finally stand up to their father. A blink you miss it detail, but it always brings me joy. The Fae Realm episodes are just so freaking GOOD. I love them so much. They do SO much work for character development, while still feeling like a welcome change of scenery. We get all the wonderful parallels between the families, Percy and the twins repair some damage (and that's a real title in Whitestone that he gives her, not "meaningless" as her father assumes), Keyleth gets to flex, Pike, Scanlan, and Grog all learn more about eachother, and the Fae Realm itself is just gorgeous. Plus, bonus Garmelie! (That reveal will forever be hilarious to me, realising that VM essentially bullied a VERY powerful being from one side of the realm to the other, and he LET them, because he thought they were amusing. There isn't as much of it in the animation, but in the campaign they really took Garmelie for a ride, all the mischief :D) Great reactions, I will also be sad when you finish them. But fingers crossed season 3 might be next year! (I have no idea, I'm just hoping really hard.)

The player characters can definitely die. The fact that we've seen people come back like Vex is just a product of PC perma-death being really hard per the game rules, plus the existence of resurrection and healing type magic. Matt tried to "home rule" to make resurrection more difficult. The players have just rolled really well during those times.

"Amazon's been killing it" actually the success of the show has very little to do with Amazon. You already know it's based on a campaign and the players are also the voice actors. But it was crowdfunded on kickstarter by critical role fans. They raised 11.3 million dollars for the show. They basically handed amazon a success on a silver plater.

Btw, that bord that gets ripped in half is based off Matt and Marisha's pet bird, Dagon, who is unfortunately no longer with us. They put him in as an easter egg before he died and forgot about it. When they watched the episode when it came out, that scene happened, and they laughed themselves into tears because of the timing.

Mechanically, the Feywild is the more chaotic reflection of the Prime/Material plane. Emotions run higher, *way* higher there, in both directions. Love becomes soul-searing passion and depression becomes overwhelming despair. Then you have Archfey, powerful fae beings who typically embody some principle or emotion. Some become so powerful that they warp the Feywild around them. Saundor is a jilted lover who is obsessed with tempting and claiming his 'true' love. But, as many people have pointed out, he is instead the DnD version of a toxic incel. Hence why he lives in a bog XD.

In answer to your non-question about if the players can die. In the strictest sense at this point in the story many of them already had. Basically any extremely close call that the show has depicted was in the campaign that character dying. Cassandra (Percy's sister) died when she got her throat slit. Vex died in the fight against the Briarwoods (though the show shifted this to Keyleth for dramatic tension), Grog had his brain eaten in events that happened just before the timeline of the show and died again when the sword from this episode consumed his life force, Vex actually died as depicted in the show at the tomb of the Raven Queen, and Pike died before they started streaming their campaign (and that is why her hair is white). In all of these instances they had a spell (called Revivify) that works similarly to how you see shock paddles depicted in media. If you can get to the corpse of some one who has died within the last minute, you can revive them. In their game this is not a guaranteed thing though, and much like you saw when Vex died in the tomb in the show there would be a brief ritual to bring them back with a chance to fail. The altered this for the show to keep the impact of death more looming and tense then just showing that the players by this point already had the power to bring the dead back to life, even if it is not a guaranteed thing.

Cassandra didnt die in the game it was an illusion, also staged in the show but maybe a bit more real considering how Keyleths healing attempt looked. Vex in the Briarwoods fight was KO'd and it was only luck that she was able to succeed on her death saves to come back by herself. Grog did die in the underdark, but having his brain munched only rendered him catatonic, it was against KVarn that he was hit by a death ray.

don't worry about the person who was disguised as Garmelie... for now, just know that Vox Machina just made a very... VERY powerful ally ;) also, it's been mentioned I'm sure, but in the campaign Grog had to roll to save against the sword and he rolled a natural 20... only to realize a minute later that it should have been at disadvantage (roll twice and choose the lower number). He rolled again and got a natural 1... ... so the sword straight up fucking killed him. I think it ate his soul. But luckily they were able to revive him within a minute. They changed it for the show because the more deaths and resurrections, the less meaningful the deaths become. suffice to say that the Critters have the foresight of knowing who makes it to the end, but no, Nobody in the show has plot armor and that makes it all the more awesome

In my friend's campaign, I play a kobold (think three foot tall lizardman) fighter/rogue who has the same intelligence score as Grog. I started creating him as a meme character for shits and giggles, but he's become the heart of the party. The best way I can describe him is as a golden retriever with John Wick levels of assassination. So now we enter the Feywild En route to another vestige, the group are divided, and the Fey Realm isn't as welcoming as Percy's studies had hoped for, they also really don't like Vax, as the Raven Queen's Champion. But Percy finally got to use his non-gun weapon 'Consequences'. Not so fun fact: The bird that was ripped apart was based off of Matt and Marisha (the DM and Keyleth)'s pet bird, who then died between production so when they saw the episode they realised they just relived the death of a pet again. But with Merry last season as Archie, we have Pippin (Billy Boyd) for Season 2, voicing the scampy, lecherous and well-traveled satyr Garmelie, who despite Percy's pride offers to lead them through the Feywild to reach the vestige. They must however pass through a city, familiar to the twins, the place of their former home and in it, their piece of shit father. Elsewhere Grog removes Craven Edge, at a price. It's different to the table which had a more similar route, Pike cast Greater Restoration to sever the blade's hold on Grog and they banished the weapon to another realm, destroying it at the cost of Grog's strength provides a more interesting route for him. Funner fact than last: the song 'I'm makin' my way' comes from an in-joke on the table, every time someone said 'makin' my way' it would be echoed in a higher pitch by the rest of the table. Okay so character death it's possible, very possible, but at the same time the DM is there to make the play enjoyable and balance out the caliber of enemy. There's little fun in running into a near-certain TPK but sometimes an enemy should be ran from rather than confronted, much like how Vex died death comes from poor decisions as much as it does poor rolls. Trippy fact: Vex does in fact speak with Trinket while high, of course they don't sound like Cheech Marin but Matt can only do so much. Time apart has not warmed the twins' father in any way, but he at least offers passage to reach the Vestige. It went a little differently on the table, one key change was that Syndor actually did get stumped by Percy's announcement, which is a very real title in Whitestone Percy's player Taliesin could talk about Whitestone Lore for hours. And no Percy didn't pick his name, much like royalty many of the names come from combination of houses; Von Musel and De Rolo particularly. Vex also argues with her father a lot more fervently, accusing him of taking them away from their mother where they were happy, the quote she uses later in the episode is paraphrased from her quote 'If I could pull your blood from my veins and give it back I would'. But thanks to overcoming the temptation of sadness, Vex now has the Fenthras Bow, a vestige gained after Mythcarver lost, and Garmelie gives them a portal back to Whitestone. But appearances are deceiving, there's more to Garmelie that met the eye, the next are the gauntlets - in the hands of Grog's uncle.

Percys electro-glove is called "Diplomacy" not consequences, in the show here it seems to be a reference to actual diplomacy failing him in Vasselheim. And Vex talking to Trinket wasnt a drug induced hallucination, she cast the spell Speak with Animals and had a genuine conversation with him.

I'm pretty sure that Taliesin said that the feel he was going for with Percy in the Fae Wild was basically an American otaku/weeb who is obsessed with the idea of Japan he got from anime finally going to Japan and realizing it isn't anything like he thought it would be.

@@KingsBard Yeah! I THINK that happens on the siege to Vecna's crazy moving city. They escaped using Planar Shift but time is funky in the Fey Realm and when you exit it could have been 2 weeks, or 2 hours, or 2 years. So iirc they made a deal with him so the time funkiness didn't affect them. But I could be wrong, it has been a long time since I watched.

So for the thing to remember about Vax becoming the Champion of the Raven Queen, is that there already exists a class in DND 5E that has a similar definition of being the champions of deities. So the question really is what alignment is Death in a world of DND?

I'm sure someone else will say this but the bird at the start is a refence to Marisha and Matt's pet bird who died in-between story boarding and production so they were just getting over mourning their pet when they had to watch it get torn apart in the finished product. They found it darkly hilarious.

This is one of the times the animated series TOTALLY changed what happened from the tabeltop. Grog's recovery from Craven Edge is COMPLETELY different in the tabletop. That's all I'll say. As for who Gamiillie turns into, you'll find out. Whether they cover it later in the Vox Machina series (could be even season 4), or just watch Campaign 2 or wait for the Mighty Nein series (his character isn't fully fleshed out until campaign 2 anyway. ;)

Vecna is actually "The Whispered One". Remember the powerful Lich the Briarwoods tried and failed to summon? Yeah, he's actually Vecna. They just couldn't say his name because of copyright, but the whispered one and Vecna are the same person. Vax is unrelated to Vecna, the image of dead Vax just looks vaguely similar because undead. also, Vax is NOT undead currently. Still just a half elf.

In the show Grog fails a check of the sword when he rejected to keep feeding it and his soul was absorbed by it dying then Pike reclaim his soul and resurrect him and Kyleth (the party never was splitted at this moment) vanish the sword in a demiplane previously visit by the party still intact. The feyrealm reject Vax because the vestige has negative energy of the opposite plane of the feyrealm the shadowfell but in the show never happen. And the phrase of Kyleth "kids so adorable" is a joke because in the show she murder first one children and near the end anocher both by accident of course.

In the campaign, Matt just straight up KILLED Grog. So all this weakness stuff is new. Yeah, in the campaign by this point like half of Vox Machina have died already. ANYONE can die, and in the campaign they DO, but Matt does resurrection a little differently. Whenever you revive someone, you need to roll a D20, and if you roll under a 10, the resurrection fails. If it fails, the spell you tried to use won't work again, you need to try a higher level spell. Every time a player is revived, the DC to revive them again goes up by 1. So if you get revived, now the DC is 11, die again it's 12. The roll to revive is just a straight roll as well, so it gets progressively harder to revive someone. The trade off is, when performing the ritual to revive someone, you can make skill checks to try and lower the DC. Grog one time YELLED someone back to life, he made an intimidation check and it passed, so the DC went lower. There's only so much you can do though, and eventually the roll to revive will be so high you just can't pass it, no matter what roll you get. That's when someone is gone permanently, unless you do like a 9th level True Resurrection spell, which is insanely hard to pull off. In the show they've seemingly decided to make proper death much rarer so when it happens there's a substantial impact. Everyone who has seen the campaign is waiting for a certain moment, that's all I'm gonna say about it, but going this route will make it way more hilarious. But, yes, if in the campaign someone doesn't manage to revive, that's it. They're done. There are also certain ways to die, like disintegration, that makes resurrection basically impossible. So far Vox Machina has not permanently died, but any one of them CAN. Nobody has plot armor in this show. NOBODY. Every single narrow escape from death is REAL, and happened in the campaign, if a bit differently. The journey through the Fey Wild was DRAMATICALLY shortened as well. In the campaign the whole group went to the Fey Wild, there was a war between werewolves and fairies, Travis spent like 10 minutes holding the same pose because Grog was petrified. That's a lot though, so it makes sense they abridged the Fey Wild. They actually made the Twin's dad a BIGGER dick in this show than he was in the campaign. For example, he actually does amend the letter after Percy makes Vex a Lady. Here he's just a gigantic mega dick. Oh, and Percy was really excited about the Fey Wild in the campaign too, but when you leave the Fey Wild, it can fuck with your head AND time. They had the time dilation mostly muted, so they didn't come back to Exandria 10 years later, but Percy LOST all his memories of the Fey Wild. It's these kinds of moments that you just can't plan out. They have to happen by chance.
