    in the actual campaign, it was specified in grog's backstory that it suddenly struck him how small and defenseless wilhand seemed. regardless of everything he'd ever been taught, he had a need to protect this one. throughout the campaign, it is also shown that grog loves shorter races, gnomes especially. or, as he calls them, "the little folk"

    In the original campaign it was even quicker, Grog and the Herd came across Wilhan with his vegetable cart and his Uncle told them to kill him, and Grog protested, because it was just one little old gnome who had so little. So instead of killing Wilhan, they beat nearly beat Grog to death, for showing weakness. Not sure why they changed it.

    Canonically in the campaign, that flashback story was among the first raids that Grog had been on, and the first in which he encountered non-combatants. In the first sequence, Kevdak told him to go and take what he wanted; prior to that, he'd only been killing the people out fighting defensively against the herd. And these raids weren't even so common for the herd before Kevdak killed Grog's father to take charge and changed their ways.

    My interpretation of why Grog turned for Pop-Pop is that in all of the flashbacks he only ever kills armed people. The rest of The Herd slaughters indiscriminately but he only kills those who fights back (it's not a fair fight by any stretch but still a fight). It also seems like Grog is a teenager and therefore probably pretty early in his raiding career so there is a chance that this was the first time he faced a begging victim alone. If he faced a surrendering person with other Herd members, they would've killed them before he had a chance to think about it.

    Grog loves to fight, but often has to be reined in: I love how in Season 1, when he was fighting the undead in the De Rolo crypt, he got to experience the unfettered glee of wholesale destruction of already-dead creatures who he didn't have to worry about leaving grieving family with.

    We never do see Grog kill anyone unarmed. Also, and they didn't explain this in the show, but the Everlight is the goddess of redemption, and great-grat grandpa Wilhand had been chosen by her to leave a shady past. I think that flash of light from the locket was a little divine intervention that started Grog on his own path to redemption.

    I love the character development they've given Grog. We see the empathy he had to spare and save Wilhand, the courage he had to stand up to Kevdak and Zanroar, and how he and Pike formed their bond. And now…when he has virtually no physical strength, we finally see where Grog’s true strength comes from. "Standing up for the little folk." Along with the friendships he has made, his loyalty to those friends, and the fact that he is willing to die in order to protect them.

    The thing with Grog is in the flashbacks he's basically a teenager, so his life before was that of a child soldier who hadn't known anything else, and he's not very bright, so it kind of was the first time he'd considered that the people he kills have families.

    The writers certainly deserve some credit for handling Scanlan's characterization throughout the series. His obnoxiousness is a feature, not a bug, and the moments when we see the most depth and honesty from him are when the rest of the party aren't around, so it makes so much sense later on how much it completely blindsides the party when he confesses his love for Percy. And you're not wrong about the quality. I loved the first season, but this one is a clear step up in just about every aspect, from animation quality to the ability to spread the character development around.

  • @exriel

    A couple thoughts on the why of Grog. The speech Kevdak delivers in the opener heavily implies that this is very early in Grog's raiding career. It's conceivable that he's never been directly confronted with this situation before. Another little detail is that, up to this point in the animation, everyone Grog has killed has been holding a weapon. Plus, throw in the return of the golden halo imagery surrounding the tiny portrait of Pike and you get hints of divine influence. The Everlight is the goddess of compassion and redemption after all. It's a lot of little things, so it does feel jarring. A little more time would have been nice.

    I love your love for highland cows so much. Growing up with a veterinarian I just adore cows and highlands are something special. We love and appreciate unironic adoration for Cows. Grog's change of heart might seem a bit sudden, but his backstory is mostly unchanged. This was the first time Grog had been expected to kill someone who refused to defend themselves or fight back in any way. His age is somewhat ambiguous, but Grog was unquestionably quite young when this happened (probably a teenager). The fact that it was a relatively new experience for Grog also meant that he hadn't done enough killing to become desensitized.

    A few people have given their takes on Grog's turnaround, and there are a lot of different factors to it, here's a summary of some plus my own thoughts: - Grog is *young* in the backstory, and Kevdak's line in it implies this was sort of a first run for him raiding with the Herd - Grog was mostly fighting armed defenders - Grog was raised to this, and isn't too bright, so probably hadn't had many reason before to question whether what he was doing was right - Wilhand was actively *begging* Grog for his life, which may have been a first on its own - Grog is a lot of things. He's violent and he enjoys violence. But at his heart, Grog is also *kind*, despite not growing up in an environment where that would thrive. It's clear from Kevdak's words, and even Zanror's words of concern that he was going "soft" that it's viewed as a weakness in the Herd. Kevdak is probably right when he says Grog was never going to work out in the Herd in the long run. That his turn happened here and not farther down the line probably saved his own life as much as it saved Wilhand's. - In context of the previous point, the interpretation that the little glint calling Grog's attention to the portrait might have been the intervention of the Everlight is a pretty compelling one. They may go into more detail later, but it was was alluded to in Scanlan's song about Pike in season one, so I don't consider it much of a spoiler: Pike and Wilhand themselves come from a family of poor reputation (they didn't get the name "Trickfoot" from dancing). Wilhand became a follower of the Everlight later in his life, and he was the one who raised Pike in her graces. Giving a little nudge to someone who was clearly just waiting for an excuse to change for the better seems to be firmly in the goddess's wheelhouse.

    Pike's hair used to be black (with a purple streak), until she was bisected by a glabrezu (look it up if you dare). It turned white when she was resurrected in the Everlight's temple. Scanlan was originally a part of Dranzel's troupe before he joined VM, but it's nice to see them here. But the next episode is the shining gem of the season...

    6:27 He probably didn't have to deal with non-combatants before. Grog loves violence, but he likes a fair fight, a challenge, and he's not cruel. Hurting people who have no way of defending themselves doesn't sit well with him. And lets face it, Grog's not the brightest bulb in the box, so that probably was the first time he had really thought about what he was doing.

  • @dehro
    @dehro Жыл бұрын

    if you notice, Grog only killed/fought against those who were armed and fighting back.. and his uncle says he has a soft spot for the little people (think gnomes and halflings) probably because they pose no threat or challenge to him, in his mind... so he is consistent...he says it himself.. he let the little folk die, he didn't kill them himself... had his cousin not been there, he would probably just have backed out and gone on fighting other "enemies"... his cousin forced his hand to take sides, so to speak.

    Here's the thing about gnomes: they live a *looong* time. Scanlan is nearly a thousand years old, and has been banging his way across Exandria for that entire time. For context, Ghengis Khan died less than 800 years ago, at about age 60--and he has over 16 million descendants alive today. That golden thread of fate in the show's opening is actually just everyone's blood relation to Scanlan.

    Back to campaign 1: There was a member of the herd named Shale that mentions that Grog was the runt of the litter. He was the smallest among the goliath children and was never picked to play goat ball. I imagine this put quite a chip on his shoulder, making his become obsessed with being stronger and stronger, being accepted among the herd and join in on the raids. I suspect this contributes to his fondness for the smaller races, such as gnomes and halflings. Pike and Scanlan are his favorite party members and Kima is his favorite outside the party. He especially admires Pike and Kima for being a “monstah” and “badass” respectively, despite the smaller stature in his eyes.

    Hello from Philadelphia USA! The YT algorithm had this video pop up in my feed and tho I usually don't go in for reaction vids or other youtube formulaic "vid structure fads" (for lack of a better term). I'm an older (early 50's) mostly homebound (as I'm disabled) huge Critical Role fan (and an O.G. nerd) for almost the entire run of their actual play show (starting from about mid campaign one) and after this vid did it's short autoplay preview.. I decided to give the whole vid a chance, as I'm also a huge fan of the animated series of course and I am so happy that I did as your energy, humor, and personality are quite wonderfully infectious in all the best ways.. I'm even currently binging all your Vox Machina reaction vids as I write this, lol, and enjoying them very much as your vids feel like watching someone discover the same joy I had when falling in love with Crit Role myself as the animated series is so well done and is a great (tho condensed) adaptation of the actual play show... So, I'm subscribed tho I'll probably just watch the VM vids but eventually check out the other fandoms you explore as well. I just wanted to say Hi and I may post on here from time to time.. love to show you non-spoiler clips and side by side comparisons of the anime and live show (of parts that you've already published) and wonderful bits that didn't make it into the show.. the live show is quite an investment (tho I think worth it) at 115 episodes at 3.5-5 hours a pop for C1 alone but there are amazing improv bits as well as the actors infectious and playful friendship to boot.. I'm a writer, (if you couldn't tell by this novella post), so will also try to contribute to the fake spoilers and head cannon that you encourage as well, heh. Can't wait for season 3 (and beyond hopefully) and also the newly announced spin off series featuring the Mighty Nein, their characters and story from Campaign 2. loving your Vids, keep 'em coming! who'd a thunk I'd go for a "react to" vid series, lol, but they've so far been a nice little parasocial positivity boost in my day and feels like rewatching one of my favorite shows with a fun and funny friend seeing them for the first time.. something important as all I have is downtime due to my disability (I basically live a life of retirement but am not a total hermit, heh, just have a ton of free time that I try to fill) and don't get to be actually social all that often with my real life friends due to them having real lives and jobs and all that. it's no substitute for the real thing but it does actually help.. probably one of the reasons I enjoy CR so much, heh, as their tight and very genuine friendship pulls you in and you end up feeling included in it (tho you really aren't, of course. you may know THEM from watching their interactions for hundreds of hours but THEY do not know YOU, heh. it's an important distinction for obvious reasons. it's a passive, not truly interactive experience.).. go figure, a positive use of the internet.. ha! Cheers and Hello! 🥳

    @@WeeLassReacts Thanks for the awesome reply! I didn't wanna come off as really "against" reaction vids or anything as I'm not.. it's just I don't usually go in for the format and it's more about the presentation and matching overall personality sensibilities with the presenter really for me.. (and I'm sure most others too as enjoyability, like in any media, is wholly subjective to the viewers tastes, like how I answer the question to what kind of music that I listen to and my reply is always.. well, I only listen to ONE genre of music.. it's called "Good" and I only know it when I hear it. 😁). I was pretty much charmed off the bat, which doesn't happen all that often.. usually, it can take a bit of repeated exposure but not in this case.. finding your vids on LOVM was one of Bob Ross's "happy little accidents", heh. (I can be a bit picky, as youtube is my only "TV" style content aside from streaming as I scan it daily to add to my "watch later" list and just run it in the background as I do other daily tasks, I even pay for it to cut the ads.. tho I don't mind the odd in vid sponsored spots as a necessary evil, as long as it's not overly gratuitous and intrusive). it's nice to find a new channel that just fits in with my overall entertainment wants.. I liken it to finding an interesting and fun conversation and people at a party and prefer when they are just being mostly genuinely themselves, even tho I am aware that it's a bit of a heightened version of genuine due to being "on and present" for the camera.. but that still fits with the party conversation allegory, as we tend to be heightened, slightly performative (not the best term for it due to possible negative connotations) versions of ourselves speaking in a crowd.. but it's still an honest version, IMO.. well, I'm starting to write a book again, lol, as my ADHD on the spectrum brain is jumping from conversation ideas and analysis.. ha! so I will keep this a bit shorter rather than going off on tangents (I type almost as fast as I think and without too much filter).. so I'll just restate how wonderful it is to find your content and that it might be a good way to help me checkout other fandoms that I've been meaning to check out (eyeing the Gravity Falls vids as I've heard good things from a few friends and your vids might be a good way to be introduced to that world..) and also totally agree that Pike RULES! she's totally the heart and spirit of Vox Machina.. Ashley Johnson, her creator and voice actor, was often absent from the live streams for extended periods of time as she was a major supporting character on the show "Blindspot" and would take up residence in NYC during when it was shooting it's seasons (Crit Role is LA based).. but would often skype in on a monitor for sessions in C1 and C2 when her schedule allowed and that's where the "astral form" from season one of LOVM came about.. but she had so many classic Role Play moments that I so hope make it into the animated series.. absolute classic moments with Grog (one in particular where Pike becomes a tutor to him), Scanlan, and another character that hasn't shown up in the series yet, all that I absolutely hope make the show.. Grog and Vax also have some amazing moments that they haven't really delved into yet as well.. and yes, Scanlan is a walking HR sex offender nightmare, lol, but the man behind him, Sam Riegel, is actually a secret genius and despite the deceptive sleezy and low brow humor on the surface, He gives his flawed characters hidden deep depth and ever surprising and evolving character arcs to an astounding degree.. I so hope this comes across more in the series and I think we are just starting to see it finally with the current last few episodes you've done reactions too.. the Pike of the actual play show is even more so, even tho the series does a pretty great job of portraying her properly, just a bit abridged.. I totally get the gay panic reaction you have with her, hehe. (did I use that term properly? I'm part of the queer family but it meant something different (and far darker and negative) in my youth than as a term for a bit of a same sex crushing "Squee!" as I see it used among the younger queer generations these days, perhaps as a reclamation or even general ignorance of the original usage which was admittedly only for a fairly short period.. I absolutely prefer this current usage in any case.) (fun fact: Ashely's also the voice of "Ellie" in the Last of Us video game, along with Laura Bailey (Vex) who portrayed "Abbey" in the sequel game and both had cameos in the season one finale of the tv series based on the game's story on HBO).. well, I guess I failed on making this post shorter.. sigh. 😷 I blame all the coffee I drank while writing, heh. Regardless, can't wait for new episodes of your reactions to LOVM now that I'm all caught up! Cheers to you and thanks for making such wonderful and enjoyable stuff! ❣

    Yeah the episode doesn’t do a great job explaining it but they do give us some hints about Grog’s sudden change(that are admittedly way easier to pick up on if you already know the story): “I should have known you weren’t strong enough to raid with us” he’s young and he hasn’t been raiding for long. “Weak, just like your father” his dad might have had a compassionate side that Grog got to see when he was little. And he’s no longer around. Killed? Banished? “He’s not a fighter, just and old fellow” In his short time raiding, he maybe only came into contact with people who fought back or *could* fight back, this is his first time seeing someone truly defenseless. It’s pretty obtuse but it all paints a picture of a soft-hearted kid who just needed a chance to question his uncle’s teachings and do the right thing.

    In the actual campaign, Grog's belt is actually a Belt of Dwarvenkind, which gives him several useful benefits, but Travis obsessed over the beard side-effect (which was far from instant like in this series).

  • @AnxietyRat

    @AnxietyRat

    5 ай бұрын

    Yeah the beard side effect was actually technically a homebrew that Matt did because you technically can only grow a beard if your race is capable of growing facial hair. Goliaths are not. So technically rules as written the belt would not work for Grog but not just made it work for him, and made it VERY difficult, because Travis was SO excited about the beard being a thing the belt could do!

    Grog mostly fights for the challenge. It builds a sense of fairness, trying to fight dangerous opponents. But a little old gnome is not a challenge. It's cruelty for the sake of cruelty. And he found that he can't stomach doing that.

The romantic tension between her and Scanlan is a reference to ads in the campaign written by Sam Riegel(Scanlan's Voice Actor), where Sam was "The only man Laura ever loved" Also, be ready to use your plushie for the next ep, it's a rough one

    Yes, I can explain it better in the comments. You made up the "Grog killed hundreds, maybe thousands of people" part, and then got confused by an information you made up. Good job! 😂👍 As for the number of people Grog killed who were begging for their lives and mentioning their families instead of actively trying to stab him in the face... it might have been zero. PS: also, in the campaign, Grog and his cousin were much younger.

    The official Vox Machina backstories are in a video titled 'Critical Role C1E14 Character Bios'. Grog's is the first one. His is a bit vague, but it does specify that his Herd just happened upon Wildhand in the woods. It wasn't a raid, they were just gonna kill him because they could. Grog is a very impulsive guy and suddenly he hated the idea of killing an innocent and terrified little gnome. Grog also was a teenager at that time and we don't know how much fighting he'd done other than 'enjoying proving his might' among the Herd, which could just mean fighting each other for sport. In the game version, Grog does absolutely love little folk. He's very fond of Lady Kima.

    It's easy to fight someone who's fighting back or running. If they fight back and you kill them, you "won the fight". If they run and you kill them, you "hunted them down". But if they simply stand and beg for mercy, there's no other word for it but murder

    In the campaign Grog's father was the original leader of the Herd of Storms, he was killed by Kevdak who took his place. Grog was still allowed to stay in for a while till eventually he was kicked out/nearly killed for not attacking Wilhelm. As far as spoilers, Scanlan flirts with his mother, Vax and Vex switch names for an episode, Grog learns to fly, and Percy blows up from all the gunpowder on him.

    Well, for one, Grog is very young in these flashbacks. It's implied that this is the first time he's been taken along on a raid, so he probably hasn't killed hundereds of people before. Some, definitely, but probably not ones that were completely defenseless. And secondly, Wilhand worships the Everlight, like Pike. She's a godess of redemption. It's never really confirmed, but it's a popular headcanon that she maybe had a hand in this situation. Led someone bad, but redeemable to one of her followers who could help him on the path to redemption. And perhaps nudged Grog out of his rage in that moment so he had a chance to actually think about the situation and his choice.

    I don't think she'll be Mosco's favorite because of reasons that we all know, but it will be interesting to see how Mosco reacts to Nott and contrast that with how she felt about Scanlan. I hope the Bells Hells get animated. I'll be pissed if the Mighty Nein do but they don't, because the MN were my least favorite group. Although, REAL SPOILERS for Vox Machina and C3 of Critical Role...... considering how many ties there have ended up being to VM, maybe they'll just show up in season 6 of TLOVM if it gets that many? They have 3 seasons for sure so far, and the creators have said they expect to need 5 seasons get through all of C1. At this point, C3 is becoming almost an extension of C1, so maybe?

    Grog is, as Scanlan once put it, really dumb. One time, they polymorphed him into an eagle and he actually got smarter (eagles are smarter than Grog). So, he is like really stupid; trouble-with-doorknobs stupid, point-away-from-face stupid, do-not-microwave-toothpaste-prior-to-use stupid. It's not a great leap to assume that he just got it that killing people might possibly be wrong when he met Pop Pop.
