    12:23 it’s really funny how he says that he never believed a mortal could possess such wisdom, because in the actual campaign, Scanlan’s Wisdom score sits at a 7, while your average commoner has a Wisdom score of 10.

    when you get attached to a cursed item, in DnD, and you fail to resist its charm, you are in a way bound to it and can't quite bring yourself to seek for ways to get rid of it or to ask for help. He's internalized that if he lets anyone into his heart, it's just going to rip his heart out when they inevitably are gone from his life. It's why he subconsciously doesn't let anyone sincerely into his heart, even though he wants to. And now the one dude he's had a moment of sincerity and vulnerability died trying to save him. When I first watched this episode, almost the whole time I was thinking, "Oh boy, Mosco's gonna have a hard time with this one." First, Grog has that dream about killing everyone (but most importantly, Pike), then Scanlan, the "walking sexual harassment case" becomes the big hero of the day and gets some actual character development? What!? (Though I have to admit, it's pretty interesting.) And then, of course, Craven Edge possessed Grog, and Pike... well, I don't think I need to say it. Honestly, the whole episode feels like it was made just to mess with you, and you have my deepest sympathy.

    Watching you begrudgingly warm up to Scanlan has been very fun. He has such an interesting arc this season. I think after 3 Campaigns I can say with certainty that Sam Riegel (Scanlan’s creator and VA) is one of the most emotionally aware people on the team, he’s just not afraid of exploring flaws and using them to extreme emotional effect. Scanlan was built as a character to make his friends laugh, but after playing him for a while Sam recognized what kind of character would act that way and the sadness and loneliness that was beneath the surface. I’m excited to see what you think of him by season’s end.

    That's is basically the only reason I have for considering watching the Mighty Nein! I didn't like the arcs as much. I also didn't really like Beau or Essek and was very annoyed by Jester. Fjord and Molly were kind of interesting, but Yasha and Caduceus, though I had nothing against them, were just kind of boring, imo. I did like Caleb and especially Nott though! I liked her dynamic with Caleb and Fjord and even characters I wasn't fond of like Beau and Jester. Plus her story was so damn interesting! Not sure if it's too much of a spoiler that Sam's character in the Mighty Nein is female, but...there it is. Honestly, if not for that character I wouldn't even be confliced about whether or not I'm going to bother watching the Mighty Nein.

    Pike and Grog are BFF goals. After all, real BFF's never stab each other in the back. If you have to stick a sword in a friend, you do it face-to-face. Also, you get to see more about some of the sources of Scanlan's flaws. Ossisa hit on how he seeks attention so desperately because he feels unimportant, unneeded, and uncared for. And if the attention he gets is people finding him annoying, then that's fine. At least it means they see him. And then here, he shows how desperately he wants to experience "love." And, while he primarily clearly means romantic love, I don't think he really views himself as the target of familial or platonic love either. And so he tries to fill that hole with gratuitous amounts of sex and lust, but those make for a fairly poor stop-gap in the long run; and could quite easily be the source of habits that drives away what could be the love he searches for, if you think about it. But isn't that just how life is. We have things we don't like about ourselves, and in our desperation to not experience them, we so often turn to things that either exacerbate the issue, or create new issues all there own.

    Calamity lore, should you be interested: (they might go a bit more into it in the show, but probably not very much. I'll put it under the cut anyway, just in case.) So, waaay back at the beginning, a bunch of godlike beings came to Exandria (that's what their world is called) and started shaping the elemental chaos that was there into different kinds of creations, among them the sentient races of this world (elves, dwarves, humans, gnomes, dragons, etc.). That was the founding. The gods granted some of their creations, their most devout followers a bit of their power, letting them do divine magic (like the kind Pike uses). The primordials (basically manifestations of the elements that make up Exandria) weren't happy about that, because it gave these new creations too much power and they rose up and fought a war against the gods, with some of the gods choosing their side. This was the Schism, and those gods were called the Betrayer Gods from then on. The rest of the gods who fought for their creations started calling themselves the Prime Dieties and taught their followers to make their own magic, creating arcane magic (like the kind Scanlan uses). The Prime Dieties won that war, banishing the Betrayer Gods from the Prime Material Plane into their own prison planes. Then followed an era of magic and technological advancement called the Age of Arcanum. Vasselheim, the very first city was founded. Mortals were starting to get more and more powerful, using arcane magic to acomplish incredible feats. One mage even managed to destroy the god of death by erasing his name from existence and ascended to become the new goddess of death. Her own previous name was erased and she became the Matron of Ravens. Another mage, Vespin Chloras, tried to achieve something similar and released the Betrayer Gods in the process, who promptly started to rampage and attack Vasselheim itself. The war that ensued became known as the Calamity. It lasted 200 years, with gods and mortals fighting on both sides, creating more and more powerful weapons, among them the Vestiges of Divergence. 2/3 of the mortal population was wiped out. All cities (some of them incredibly powerful, flying mageocracies) except for Vasselheim fell. Eventually, the Prime Dieties managed to banish the Betrayer Gods once more. After that the Prime Dieties realised that the only way to keep something as devastating as the Calamity from happening again was to create a barrier (the Divine Gate) that prevented any and all dieties from entering the Prime Material Plane (where Exandria is). So the gods left Exandria. This was called the Divergence and it's the start of the calender that's currently in use in Exandria, marking years as X years post divergence, or PD. It's about 810/811 PD in the show at this point.

    Grog wants to keep Craven Edge for a particular fight, especially when he recognizes who has the gauntlets. The trial was originally far more mundane, and since Ripley never approached Umbrasyl in the stream, he never tracked down VM, killed the sphinx or took the vestige, and the party was never split. Grog did skewer Pike, though the circumstances were a tad different, and Cravey didn't seem to be drinking her blood? But this version is a hell of a lot more dramatic, and splitting the party allows them to follow two storylines at once. It's just a shame that we'll never see the satyr's drawing of Grog...

  • @SebastianWeinberg
    @SebastianWeinberg10 ай бұрын

    3:08 - *“Talk to Pike about it, Grog. She can help you.”* Cursed items often have a stipulation in the rules that, once a character equips or uses it, they cannot willingly throw it away or stop using it. This includes not letting the other characters know about the curse, if this would make them likely to try and take the item away. In campaign 2, Sam's character Nott got stuck with a cursed dagger that constantly threatened Nott's life in a subtle way, and it took _forever_ for the other players to notice something was up. Once you knew what was going on, you could go back through the previous episodes and find all the instances where Sam quietly, without drawing attention to it, rolled to see whether he'd survive, and marked off a counter on his sheet. 7:19 - *“Grog… Knock, knock!"* Bidet. 7:26 - *“A Calamity between men and gods. Is that the stuff that he's been kinda seeing in his visions?"* Yes. "The Calamity" is part of the background lore of the world. All the characters would know about it (if not exactly the details), but it's not spelled out expressly. That was the _second_ conflict between the gods on this world. After the gods tamed the world of Exandria and made it habitable for the mortal races they created there, the elemental titans that previously ruled there rebelled and tried to turn the world back into the frozen/burning wasteland it had been. Some of the gods saw this and said, "You know what, they've got a point. Creating and nurturing life is boring! Let's _smash_ this world and move on." The other gods (which are now called the "prime deities") fought and defeated both the titans and the "betrayer gods" and imprisoned them. Mortals could now flourish, and the gods helped them along and gave them the gift of magic. Starting from Vasselheim, the first city in the world, mortals spread all over the world and built an advanced civilisation, with high technology and magic… until somebody fucked it up, of course. Someone freed the betrayer gods from their prison, and this led to the second great war between gods, called "The Calamity" which nearly wiped out all mortal life on Exandria. Vax's vision in the tomb, where he saw impossibly gigantic, alien-looking figures looming high over the fighting mortals below, was a glimpse at what it was like. That war ended merely 800 years ago, which is why mortal civilisation is barely recovered, and nowhere near where it was before the Calamity. So, the thing to take away for this is: This show is not a medieval fantasy world, it's a post-apocalypse. 😉 20:57 - *“Oh, you can't end it there!”* Evidently they can. 😁

    Yeah, guessing his name WAS the riddle in the campaign. So when he said it immediately in the show I was like "oh so clearly they're not doing that riddle" which did kind of make sense because it was a riddle that took up a LOT of time and so I figured they would truncate it somehow but they just completely changed what the challenge was. It's funny because what your parents said is understandable to say to a little kid having a tantrum, but "don't ask, you don't get" is pretty good advice for adulthood. It's something a lot of us have to learn on our own. That if we don't take a risk because we assume the answer will always be 'no' so we figure there's no point in trying, we don't get anywhere.

    "My babies"? Grog's literally the only one in that group under 50. I forget Pike's age but she's a little over 100, and Scanlan is (of course) 69.

    Hi. The group's (estimated) ages as of the animated series: - Vax/Vex are about 27 - Percy and Keyleth are roughly in their early 20's - Pike and Grog, we don't know their estimated ages as of the show, but Pike's assumed to be 30's/40's - Scanlan is (of course) 69 Don't ya just love D&D logic?

  • @sandpiperr

    @sandpiperr

    That's not at all true. Percy, Keyleth, Vex and Vax are in their 20s. Seriously, Percy is a human! You really think he seems like he's over 50? He's probably 24 at the absolute most. Last season he said that it had been 5 years since he fled Whitestone, and if we assume he was 18 or 19 and not younger, that'd still make him under 25. I believe Pike is about 30-40 (which is considered young adult for a gnome). Grog's age isn't really ever clear, but in DnD Goliaths typically live less than 100 years, and he doesn't seem late middle age...probably more like late 20s to early 30s. But Scanlan is, indeed, 69 because of course he is!

    @@sandpiperr My bad, should've specified. I meant specifically in the trio of Pike, Scanlan, and Grog. Iirc, in the Campaign 1 wrap-up Ashley said Pike was over 100, making her the oldest of the team. And Taliesin said Percy was 19 at the start of the campaign, explicitly referring to him as ”a teenage asshole".

  • @sandpiperr

    @sandpiperr

    @@officersquidman I haven't seen that, but according to the Critical Role wiki Pike was 30s or 40s in campaign 1, and then 60s or 70s during her cameo in campaign 3 which is set 30 years later. So either you're misremembering or maybe they re-conned her age later, idk.

Also, I hate to break it to you, lassie, but you're completely on track to like Scanlan by the end of this season. One change I would request to your videos: I’ve never liked it when channels start their video with a preview of their reaction. I ALWAYS skip that part, in every video, on every channel. I don’t like spoilers. Let me see the reaction for the first time as it happens in the video.

  • @spywi

    Coming from someone who studies the YT algorithm, here are my thoughts on that: It helps people get hooked into videos faster. The first 5-30 seconds are what the large majority of people click off from, so having a preview at the beginning actually helps with watch time because more people tend to stay and watch to the end (this is the same mindset with the current state of movie trailers, they have a mini-trailer before the actual trailer now) This may be because of the current state of the KZread algorithm, or because of the rise of TikTok, but most of the time people’s attention spans are shorter than ever, so having a strong emotional moment be the teaser makes people actually sit through and watch to the actual moment/climax where it happens. This isn’t just limited to reaction videos, but to other genres as well. However! Personal preference is valid. :) there was a time in my life myself where I used to not like this style of editing. If you don’t like it, that’s perfectly fine ❤

    @@spywi yea those mini trailers are dumb as well. This is all a result of the short attention span and need for instant gratification common with a lot of people these days.
