They can't legally use the actual Beholder since they are keeping it legally distinct from D&D and Pathfinder, but their substitute monster would pretty cool.

You will have heard it a thousand times by now, but I will add to the cacophony of voices telling you that EXU: Calamity is some of the best liveplay storytelling you will ever experience. It's worth just skipping sleep and finding the time for it. You will not regret it (... well, your heart may never recover, but it's worth the pain.) The story will live in your heart rent free forever, and they bring the ancient past of Exandria to vibrant life, which enriches every other part of the CR universe. It's such a different story from a TTRPG standpoint, because unlike the usual campaigns, this is like the Titanic, we KNOW the ship sinks at the end. Calamity is right there in the name, it's the people on board that make the story. And the cast is god tier. Aabria, Lou, and Luis all bring SO muchintensity and energy (along with the familiar faces), and every player throws their ENTIRE heart into it. Brennan as the DM will make you forget to breathe for 5 hours at a time. ...Anyway *throws another recommendation on the mountain * is good, do watch. [/rambling Calamity enthusiasm] The best shot in this episode I feel isn't really up for much debate, Vax framed by the mask of the Matron and the golden threads of her temple, cloak spread. It must be SO many people's screen backgrounds right now. But I would like to throw a shoutout in for the lighting of this entire season, it's so carefully and beautifully done. every scene is lit in a way that brings more depth to the story, and I want to gnaw on it.

Matt's Trinket is really good, but the funniest trinket voice in the campaign (a one-shot actually), is Travis acting as Grog voicing Trinket in a meta-fest for the ears... and then of course there's the guest star for Trinket a few episodes forward... I am still amazed that they even thought to ask him, it's such a random thing.

Vax was already my favourite but i had no idea that this man was going to become The Flash

Now he just needs to consistently stop and talk to every enemy he comes across, get beat then win by the end of the episode.

RIP to Mr. Lance Reddick. as for the episode, i l gotta admit my first reaction to the opening was to laugh and go "wow even Trinket got a hardcore tragic origin story" You aren't ready for how they handle the Matron of Ravens... My favorite detail: When Vax was still fighting Purvon, he was just regular Vax. When he accepted fate, accepted his bargain with the Matron and Purvon passes by... suddenly Vax is now wearing the vestige and Purvon isn't. What an awesome idea for the imagery

What I love about this Matron of Ravens arc is what makes it so special for my Critical Role: it all started with a roll of the dice, if Vex hadn't rolled so low on the trap save none of this would have happened. Then we have the incredible role-playing of Liam, who without a second thought knew that the first thing his character would do is offer his own life for his sister's. And finally we have Matt, arguably the best DM in history, taking these two events and creating an incredible story that is both tragic and epic; Not to mention the wholsome fact that Matt gave at the end of the campaign that he was alredy thinking of giving Liam a special story line since he was suffering a personal tragedy at the time, that's definitely why I love Matt and all these nerdy ass voice actors.

@@jtphr33ky Nope, it's still pretty dang awesome actually. Spoilers for Campaign 3 And if anyone's to blame, It's Liam and Marisha for making such intricately C1 connected characters with Orym and Laudna lol. Liam said Keyleth was attacked in his backstory, Matt had to figure out why, and boy did he deliver with the coolest, most intriguing bad guy plot ever that has roots in C2 and was hinted at from day one of C3. (Unless of course you mean destroy in a good way, like when he destroyed Emon, then sure).

Beholders are trademarked, so they had to tweak the monster. It amuses me that they bundled the effect of the Boots of Haste into the vestige. They're keeping Ripley relevant until her showdown in season 3, but it sends things a *little* off the rails. I don't know the production timetable, but as a former(?) fanfic writer, I hope Lance finished his work on Thordak. RIP.

I dislike how Zahra does things in this episode. I would understand if her plan was less... coldly calculated, but here it`s just ruthless and too much, for me, and her gift doesn`t make up for what happened. I want to see more of her and of their relationship with VM :3 (Also i love Kat`s makeup!)

As a general rule, the Matron of Ravens doesn't speak with the Living.

This is probably the biggest gripe I have with this season, the way they changed Kash's and especially Zahra's character. I understand why. They have to be there (bc fans would riot otherwise and the cast surely loves them too), they make great antagonists, they add the necessary tension. But they were some of my favourite guest characters from C1 and it just hurts my heart to see these people who are supposed to be their _friends_ actively try to hurt them. I'm hoping they'll come back in later seasons so they get the chance to actually develop that friendship.

​@Loki the Cat What retconning? Sam has point blank said the story of Campaign 1 has been told and that LoVM allows them to tell a new story. They're not retconning Campaign 1 at all.

Wow! Yeah, that pretty much says it all.

I do want to throw out there that Kashaw DID revive Vex, it's just that the Matron of Ravens let it happen. It was ultimately Vax's deal with the Matron, but if Kashaw wasn't there there would have been nothing for the Matron to allow.

Travis/Grog's Trinket voice was even better than Matt's if you can believe it. Watch Grog's One-Shot if you want to hear it. "I don't want to make any assumptions, but ..."

I will say, as cool as Vax's fight was, I kind of wish Zara dealt the final blow like she did in the campaign, especially as they also dropped the frost dragon from the Slayer's Take 4 parter and she also got the hdywdt

While I like Zahra, storywise it doesn't really serve anything for her to deal the killing blow. Narratively, it fits better to have Vax do it.

I wish they hadn't changed Vex's backstory. It had such an impact on who she grew up to be. I get that they wanted to reinforce the twins' bond, but they really didn't need to do it at the expense of Vex's characterisation.

They incorporated the events of the novel Kith & Kin which is considered the official canon backstory for the twins

Since they're just changing who Vex IS, changing who she WAS seems minor. Can hardly tell that she's so Greedy that she steals from the Party (Guest - Broomstick), or uses Meta knowledge to try to get in on Loot (and then dying to the trap).

@@lokithecat7225 It was never going to be a one to one translation. They were always going to omit certain aspects that either didn’t add to the story or create interesting story for the audience. Her stealing the broom from Gern was so insignificant in the grand scheme of things that they removed that part of the story and incorporated the broom into the story elsewhere.

Percy had nothing to do with Vex's Death. Laura's greed and out of Character knowledge (Loot!) had her move to where Percy was checking out the Treasure.

Percy was still the one who triggered the trap in-game. Taliesin said "I [...] take off the armor" over Laura starting to say "I check for traps."

Percy is the one who triggered the trap because he didn't (whether through lack of hearing due to cross talk or just his character being too focused on the goal) wait. That's not a Vex issue. That's canon for both the campaign and animated series. I've watched that episode several times, and I don't think it's Laura's greed. From everything I've seen, it's Vex's. Travis actively has disputed the characterization that Laura is greedy. Where are you getting the out of character knowledge part though?
