One thing I love about Allura and Kima is that they are kind of Matt Mercer's self-insert and wife-insert, respectively. While his wife Marisha plays Keyleth in-game, Matt has talked about how he sees himself as Allura, kind and studious but anxious and restrained, and Kima is more like Marisha is in real life: a brave leader and a true warrior woman. I love Matt and Marisha's relationship so much, how she's his fighting champion and he's her safe place, and Allura and Kima very much echo that.
That song is literally about a couple meeting while waiting in line to an outhouse/toilet, and it has no right being that good.
Keyleth's mother's voice actor is Janet Varney, who also voiced Korra in the _Avatar: The Last Airbender_ follow-up series. So in a way, yes. Keyleth's mother *is* the Avatar. Also, this episode is why Keyleth is one of, if not my favorite character. Her struggle with self-doubt is so relatable, and seeing her find that confidence and start on her way to becoming an element bending badass is so satisfying.

Yep in the campaign Allura was in Whitestone studying the orb when this attack happened. And Kima was in Vasselheim and ended up joining the party when they showed up there. Kinda wish the dragons had targeted her a bit more given Thordak's obvious grudge against Kima and Allura. They also didn't really restart their romance until they were both living in whitestone. (The party went over to Allura's place early in the morning and Kima answered the door). Some of that was probably a bit too subtle for the tv show and given that we cut out the "Allura wants the party to rescue Kima" quest makes sense that they just set them up already in a relationship.

Actually Marisha(Keyleth) has said that one of her biggest inspirations for Keyleth was the Avatar. Now as far as spoilers and such, the next episode involves Grog jumping into a pool of acid where he has to read... except he can't read. Quite funny.
@crow8776

I actually didn't know that Keyleth was inspired by Avatar, that is so cool! It's funny tho since her next character often gets mistaken for Sokka
Yeah, the songs from Scanlan in the credits are usually long versions of songs he sings in the background. This one was his outhouse song for Grog's "poop accompaniment" request.
A few fun facts about stuff involving this episode: 1) Now that we know that the broom is a Broom of Flying, it might be fun to know that, in the original campaign, it didn't come from Gilmore's Glorious Goods. A guest start on the show had a character who happened to have a Broom of Flying and, because Vex loved flying on a Magic Carpet that was de-magiced a while back, Laura/Vex made an attempt to steal the Broom of Flying and put it in their bag of holding before the guest star's character could find out and said character never did because Vex made him believe that the broom fell into the lava and was destroyed with a fairly convincing deception roll. 2) Semi-spoilery but, while it may come as a shock to you based on how Scanlan can be, the favor Vex owes him isn't sexual nor was it ever going to be. I won't say what it is just in case they do bring it into the show later but I will say what I've said. 3) I'd say the Avatar fun facts but others already have so...yeah.
Sam, the actor/player for Scanlan, actually has a Broadway background, even performing in Les Miserables as a child actor so you definitely get him showing off his vocal talents in a lot of the end credits
Laura said at one point Vex saw Scanlan as a father figure and was surprised when the rest of the group didn't
fun fact: janet varney, who voiced korra, voiced keyleths mum
I can't recall if there was anything explicit between the two 'till the kiss, but they've definitely been right together in most scenes either's been in, other than escorting the party to Brimscythe's trail and inviting them to the ball. Also yeah, Keyleth is EXPLICITLY inspired by AtlA. lol

THEYRE SO CUTEEEE
Percy is a gem for sure. Love that man.
Many of the songs (with lyrics) in the show are written/performed by Sam Riegel (Scanlan's voice actor/creator) and the good news is they all have one and one very important meaning: PRS CHEQUES BAYBEEEEEE!!!!!
The best perk of Keyleth's new powers is that she can pop a bowl of popcorn with her bare hands.
4:55 there will be comments spamming this fun fact but in the stream Grog's conversation with craven edge was in a street outhouse too small for him in Vasselhiem and the DM was trying really hard not to laugh and there was a lot of hilarious yes-and-ing starting with asking the sword if it had feelings and if the Stormlord Monk's harsh words hurt them. There are clips and a cute animation of it.
They have announced season 3 as well as a new series based on their second dnd campaign, plus a movie but have yet to say what the movie will be about. Though people have speculated that it could be based on the miniseries they did about the beginning of The Calamity.

He's become a lot better than he was in S1, and I've really enjoyed him in episode 6 and... sort of in episode 7.... you'll all see what I mean when that one gets published hahaha
Now that you mention it, those grey guys at the end do look like Grog. How interesting. I'm sure that won't become important later :)
Taliesin (Percy) is an incredible player. He know just how to make the dramatic moments more dramatic and the comedic moments more comedic.
Season 3 is already greenlit and they've said they're aiming for 5 seasons total, which, knowing the parts of the story they've yet to cover, is a good amount I think. _And_ Critical Role recently announced that they're working on a sister show (release date tbd) about the second campaign they played (LoVM being an adaptation of their first campaign). It'll be set in the same world, but about 20 years after the events of LoVM, on another continent and focusing on a new group of characters (played by the same people), the Mighty Nein. So for example Ashley Johnson, who plays Pike here, will play a barbarian (same class, but different race as Grog) called Yasha in that show. There won't be any direct crossover, but judging by this show and the little hidden details in it, there are sure to be plenty of nods to LoVM.

honestly, somethign that I love about critical role is that in all their properties they're good at trying to add lgbtq+ rep to their stuff. Not just the main characters, though there's plenty of them, but the world is populated by all sorts of people all across the spectrum of sexuality
@AnxietyRat
5 ай бұрын
Yeah, in campaign 1, Scanlan was very very very very very very very clearly only attracted to women... Every time he would mention sexual stuff in the campaign he would exclusively refer to women not men at all ever... But they very clearly changed that for the show and I definitely appreciate that change. It's a change that fits his character, in my opinion. And with the change it makes pretty much everyone in VM of some form of LGBTQ+. ( Most people headcanon Grog as Aromantic). So yeah ,pretty much everyone else in VM, the voice actors have said they are Bi, except for Pike. And yeah of course there are NPCs that are all genders and all sexualities sprinkled throughout the world of Exandria, even in Campaign 1. There's definitely a lot more emphasis about that representation in campaign to and campaign 3 (which some people have been shity babies about) but there absolutely was still LGBTQ representation in campaign 1. There's one non-binary character that I really really hope makes it into this adaptation. I mean they are kind of a minor character so I can also understand if they are cut but they are SO badass... I really hope they make it in!

Matron of Ravens doesn't play for fun; she plays for keeps. For Keyleth, she gets honestly the most consistent big badass scenes in the series in my opinion. Also, a bit of an overcommitment to doing Pike cosplay getting a scar like that ;P It's a long road ahead; Travel Safe Friends. =)

The commenters pointed it out to Mosco in the previous reaction comments section
They do have a third season confirmed. We will be getting more from them.
"We can certainly try" is a take on Matt's catchphrase "you can certainly try". He says this whenever someone wants to do something creative in the game. The song Scanlan sings at the end credits is the song he sang to Grog while he was talking to the sword. There are several episodes where you'll want to listen to the end credit songs. 6 (I think), 7, and 10 specifically. They're clearer versions of songs from those episodes, or sometimes varients (like a rock & a country version, or something). It's funny how you keep calling Keyleth "Keeley", for reasons that will come up later. 😁
The conversation with Craven Edge happened exactly like this - Scanlan included - except Grog was squeezed into an outhouse in Whitestone. Keyleth becomes a fire elemental in the plane, learning the form of the element is part of each trial. She had learned air and earth before the stream started; all of VM joined her on the fire plane for this trial, and they hid from Thordak as he flew far overhead. They had no idea who he was or why he was there, at the time... Ripley had a bath, got a haircut and some new clothes, and built herself a new hand. She never approached Umbrasyl in the stream, but this keeps her relevant until her big showdown in season 3. Ironically, the scrying orb was originally Keyleth's, and Ripley spied on VM through an enchanted gem in her pistol, that Percy is now using.
That is Korra's VA playing her mother. And the highlight of this season is 1000 years of death!
Yes its Scanlan, he sings a lot of the music in this.
Loved your reaction! And I can't wait for the next episode. Your emotions are gonna get ragdolled, ngl
2:18 - *“You're the Avatar!”* You're joking, but that's _exactly_ what this is. While Marisha didn't consciously set out to make Keyleth an _Avatar_ homage, as a huge _AtLA_ fan, it definitely contributed to her initial concept. When she became consciously aware of the parallel, she deliberately leaned into it and made it more explicit. Why do you think they got their friend Janet Varney in to voice Vilya? 12:02 - Keyleth: _"We can certainly _*_try."_* This is a reference to one of Matt Mercers famous phrases at the table. Whenever the players ask, "Hey, can we do _X?"_ - where _X_ is something crazy, off-the-wall, and nearly impossible - Matt's answer is always, "You can certainly _try…"_ That's his way of warning them, "I'm going to let you roll for this, but unless you roll _amazingly_ well, this is almost definitely going to lead to disaster." 21:13 - *“I feel like that song meant something.”* Well, you were correct that it was Scanlan singing. It's the song he sang in the background, when Grog conversed with Craven Edge - and because it's _Scanlan,_ of course it's a love ballad that ends with a poop joke.
I'll give you a fun fact instead. Vax like giving people nicknames. Percy is Freddy. Keyleth Kikki. Vex stubby. Pike is Pickle. Grog is big man. Scanlan has nickname bit it's rarely used and it may be a spoiler since the inciting incident has not yet been in the show (probably won't be).

Very extremely psyched for this one because I know the reaction is going to be genuine and there will be much hype
I’m pretty sure the monsters they fight are mythical Salamanders (nasty fire elementals that the real-life amphibians were named after)
I liked Keyleth from the start but this Ep. really shot her up the list. Honestly I like the whole party which kinda surprised me considering a lot of the time there's at least one character in ensemble shows I at least wouldn't miss for whatever reason.
I've watched that scene so many times and I still tear up
I don't agree with all of her opinions on the characters (honestly, Grog annoyed me until _Test Of Pride),_ but I did like how she called out Vax being a pill in these few episodes. I did like that Keyleth _takes initiative_ to save Pyrah by herself instead of always just following the party, but you'd _think_ the guy would be a _little more sympathetic_ to Keyleth's "brother" village being ravaged by monsters considering his backstory.
Haha loved your little scar story
Most of the music is done by Sam Reigal, who is scanlan 👍
Keyleth gets a power up. As we will soon see when she sets a trap which trapd Vex and leaves her tied up tightly in vines.
9:44 closed captioning at this point turned Keyleth into penis. “Penis would drop everything to help us” (I think I have been watching too much Scanlan. I found that really funny)

I know it's been a hot minute since you uploaded this, but I just wanted to say that Critical Role has *a lot* of LGBT+ rep. Just focusing on the main player characters of campaign 1, Vex, Vax, Scanlan, and Keyleth are all canon with Vex, Vax, and Scanlan being bi/pan and Keyleth being demi. Everyone else is more implied with Grog appearing to be aromantic, Pike implied being bi/pan, and Percy being so obviously bi/pan that I, along with many fans, are honestly surprised he's *not* canon. This isn't even including the multiple NPCs who are very obviously "not straight" like Gilmore, Allura, and Kima. Every campaign so far has had *at least* half the main characters be canonically LGBT+ in one way or another, but no more on that since we're not there yet lol. Just letting you know that Critical Role doesn't shy away from rep : )

To be fair Scanlan is only bi/pan in the animated adaptation. It's a change that they made that I thought totally fit with his character, though. but yeah he is not bi in the campaign from the beginning like many other characters were. 🤷♀️ Just wanted to add that slight clarification. Wouldn't want someone to go into campaign one thinking that Scanlan is openly bi and then see him explicitly only referring to women when talking about sexual things.... Because THAT'S what happens. 🤷♀️ But yeah critical role has never shyed away from lgbtq+ rwp even all the way back in campaign one. Um, I am entirely certain that the reason Vax was hesitant about going to Pyrah was because of the Matron's armor. He didn't yet understand what that meant, and he was scared of what it did, and he wanted to find the vestiges as quickly as possible so that he could get rid of the armour. Which is understandable. But, instead, you're implying that he didn't want to fight to defend the lives of a friend's people...a friend who's always fought by his side....because she wouldn't sleep with him. So in your quest to defend him, you're turning Vax from a character who's carrying an unimaginable burden, into an incel. You should probably stop talking because wtf, dude?
