Exactly. There's no shame of being ignorant of things. Most of us are ignorant of most things (in the sense that by this point humankind has gathered so much knowledge that it is impossible for anybody to know more than a fraction of it). However, basing one's life on something and holding one's ignorance about the topic as a badge of honor is scary. It's weird that he doesn't realize that this won't make him look particularly good.

And how did they ‘evolve’ -Or Intelligent design Given that there is a chance that intelligent design or maybe even God created all this, and given that the bible exists with some mind blowing claims about the status of believers and unbelievers and their possible future destination, wouldn’t it be sensible to at least check it out? Rather than just to drift along hoping for the best, mocking God and his followers in the process? It may seem smart to you and impress your atheist friends but really that is a rather dumb thing to be doing don’t you think?

@@janicebeams1854 It's not about David changing his mind, it's about beliefs being based on things proven to be true. There is no evidence of gods or all things in the bible being true. If there were, I would believe them. That being said, is the issue with the evidence or me? Are my standards for evidence to high or are theists standards to low? All I want is a demonstration of the super natural existing, a miracle, something existing outside space and time, a god. A demonstration that is repeatable and follows scientific standards. To accept everything about Christianity being true because you had an experience would never suffice for me, regardless of how real it felt.

You claim I'm not honest, what do you mean? If I don't believe under the same circumstances as you, is it a me problem? I am however, disputing any claims of the super natural that are reported to have happened in that historical time because the super natural has never been demonstrated to be a thing. As for 'God only interacts with honest people', I ask you once again, how do you know I'm not honest? Is it not possible your god knows I'm honest and has chosen not to revel itself to me? How could you possibly know the difference? You also never addressed my pink dragon god. If my personal experience lead me to the pink dragon god, why is my belief wrong and yours right? Is it possible that the pink dragon god made you think your god was 'the god' because it has a deeper plan? How could you possibly know the difference? So you see Janice, it's not enough to just voice your views as if it's so obvious. I can reciprocate with a different god claim and we are no closer to the truth. I have questions for you if you don't mind. What is your best evidence for a god other than personal experience because...well...refer to the pink dragon comment. But also every point he (tries) to make seems grounded in the thorough indoctrination of his religious beliefs, to the point his mind simply cannot go to a place that might run contradictory to them. Hmmm ... I think I'll go with both. David is probably shockingly unintelligent under all circumstances (although probably willingly so), and religion just supercharged that to the point of total idiocy.

It's very much both. I see this as a failing of education as David never truly learned good critical thinking skills. He is unable to evaluate complex scenarios like evidence based arguments. He cannot graps these types of questions because he never was put in a place where he had to. This is becoming very apparent in this country. When you try to walk someone through SE and they cannot deviate from their view in a hypothetical it means they are lacking those fundamental a skills. His religion reenforces this lack of skills and makes him ever more vulnerable. Notice how David cannot grasp the difference between "you talked to jesus" and "you felt you talked to jesus." He cannot understand that David can experience things that are not true. He may get that other can but it is a foreign concept to him that his experience may not be real.

I truly shudder at what his idea of "history" is. The American education REALLY needs some serious work. Many states seem to write their own textbooks and teach creationism as science and history as only American and/or Biblical. As a Canadian, I have had Americans, to my face, tell me that Canada does not exist. They were sure the name of the country north of the US was "North America".

David, what is the "reason for the faith within you?" The reason? And you can't say faith is the reason for my faith..... This is the reason I am an atheist. I really tried to find a reason for my faith in Jesus and the Bible. I could not find one. There is no hell in the Jewish writings. Hell was a human construct for men to keep power over people with fear. I do not believe in hell. There is no reason to believe in hell. There is no reason to believe in the Bible. What is the reason for the faith within you, David?

News Flash, Dave: people 'interact' with 'God' every day. Happened to me, once. The RCs would call what I had a "Minor Revelation". Was a real trip, too. However, it was purely internal, and its effects didn't last. I was a skeptic before, was *almost* convinced, but presently I can see how it was merely an internal mental state, and not God. It's a pretty impressive thing to go through, but not one of these 'interactions' ever leave a single shred of evidence sufficient enough to convince any skeptic.

i was reunited with friends from my teens who i hadn't seen for about forty years, we all play guitar and spent the weekend laughing, recording music and generally have the best weekend of my life. it felt like an epiphany for me - i had never played guitar with other people (properly) before, and here i was recording and feeling right at home even with the people who dropped by. but it's not god, it's chemicals. it's not religion, it's elation. i have a saying, humans don't understand human nature. this desire to feel "special" cos the god of the universe loves you, persoannly is so flippin sad.

It wasn’t easy losing my belief in an afterlife, especially because i have recently lost most of my family one by one. But compared to one where, depending on the person you ask, upwards of a hundred billion souls including some of those loved ones will suffer forever; maybe oblivion is better.
