WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Papa Smurf The idea of Original Sin, or being damned in advance for the sins of your ancestors is complete and utter bullshit. Any “god” who would conceive of such a thing is unworthy of worship, and anyone willing to follow such a god is a traitor to the human race. Jesus, as Christians imagine him, never existed, but even if he did he wouldn’t be worth our time if day. Also, I couldn’t care less whether or not you responded to this, there’s nothing to pay Jesus back for, as he’s done absolutely nothing.

The biggest joke is that Judaism and essentially the God they worship, which is what all of Christianity is predicated upon, expressly forbids human sacrifice in all its forms. Deuteronomy 12:31 You must not worship the LORD your God in their way, because in worshiping their gods, they do all kinds of detestable things the LORD hates. They even burn their sons and daughters in the fire as sacrifices to their gods. Sacrificing humans for sins, harvest, and recompense were EXACTLY how pagans worshipped their gods and the madness of Christianity is that these buffoons CANNOT SEE THAT THEY ARE IN A HUMAN SACRIFICE BLOOD CULT.

Paganism the term is used simply because there were to many cults and various nature and spirtualist religions to list, most didn't even have names. There's also the fact it was easier for the modern religions to call them that because they lack the ability to are nuance. @@rickydarcilover5581 The sad part (at least in my eyes) is that these people are often very smart. The level of intellect they use to try and fit things to keep believing them is really high (as someone above noted, dunning-krueger), at least in some cases. But its brainwashing. Society just accepts it because it's so prevalent. It's so sad and the exact reason why people who lose their religion end up needing support and some will end up needing therapy for ptsd like symptoms for the rest of their lives. I also don't think its naivety or stupidity that attracts people to begin with as I think anyone can be susceptible to that kind of brainwashing (just look at that sex cult, nexium, parading as a self-help career boosting system - many of their victims are atheists or nonreligious). If someone preys on you in a moment of weakness, it's very easy for extremely intelligent people to be conned.

Emerald kat . Yes and the keywords you used were the moment of weakness. It’s documented that a human is the most open and receptive to knowledge from birth to 5 years old. So like stamping a logo on tinfoil, telling a 2 yr old to believe in god or they will burn in hell when they die, Is the type of affective child abuse that insures another dedicated god lover, that will fight against all reason like our beloved zombie brained callers. And like you say, escaping it can cause its own anxiety. The child abuse indoctrination is so powerful that even people getting university degrees are often still locked in to the brainwashing effect. This I believe is because of uni degree does not make a person intelligent anyway. Anyone can sit in the classroom and have a whole lot of knowledge crammed into the head. The real test of intelligence is common sense, which the indoctrination totally destroys

HK did an awesome job of destroying Brandon's nonsensical assertions and for him to bring up what he hasn't educated himself on, evolution, just proves the level of ignorance being taught in religion. Religious apologists and preachers are absolutely doing a disservice to education and over all intelligence. I had a silly conversation with one of my nephew's friends about rocks sweating and when I explained that it was condensation on the rock due to moisture in the air, he called me a liar. So I asked him if he saw the moisture on his car as well and if he did, was his car sweating as well.... he called me rediculous for believing that his car was sweating... really. So your car doesn't sweat but the rock you saw with the same condensation does... hmm. Interesting. I left it at that and I told my nephew he needed a new friend. One that wasn't delusional. I said that loud enough for his friend to hear so he couldn't say I spoke about him behind his back. Brandon and my nephew's friend should meet. Maybe all the magic they seem to believe in will help them sort things out... maybe not. LMAO! I actually feel ashamed for them. Honestly.

@Frank The Realist The worst part is that they only do the bare bones base level of any research and latch on to the first thing that can possibly make an argument sound as ridiculous as possible to discredit it. I'm sure that if they had asked him about it, Brandon would have (if he'd done any research) probably have said "Scientists say the building blocks of life would have needed minerals! Minerals are rocks! They're saying we came from rocks!" It's entirely dishonest because it means they're doing the most bare-bones research possible just to put the mental image in other people's minds of rocks growing legs and walking off. It's the equivalent of someone saying "Pfft, look at this guy, believes in _natural planes._ Did you know people who believe in natural planes think they're made of rocks?" "You mean the metals they use to make the-" "See? Metals, that's from rocks! I never seen a rock fly! Don't be an idiot, obviously planes were made by Jesus."

Sacrifice isn’t money you put in the offering plate while everyone’s watching, then retrieving it when no one’s around... similarly, sacrifice isn’t dying as PUNISHMENT, then coming back to life saying “nanny nanny boo boo!” By this kinda “evidence,” Penn & Teller are more powerful miracle workers, or at least their tricks are more amazing. I am sitting on my couch listening to Brandon as he attempts to justify the righteousness of an eternal sentence in hell. To condemn one to eternal damnation in hell would be the most evil of all acts ever committed as the act itself never ends. Though I see the flawed logic and principle's on hell, and God being just for sending the multitudes there I still can't shake it's grasp. Hell is very real in the mind as a collective, and that is what is frightening. Hell is not just and there is no defence of it or for it. The existence of hell is not the debate. The debate is whether is just or unjust. The man who says that hell is just shows injustice to all mankind. Hell is a disgusting, vile and evil invention. I don't want to close with a negative statement Know it's a noble cause in defending what is right. I appreciate those that took the time to make this video. This conversation is long overdue. Who knows what will happen once we all have is as a whole? One big happy family. One thing is for sure and that's that things will change. As things change the world will change. The best we can do is attempt to change the world for the better. That is all my friends.

The concept of hell did not exist until the 8th century CE, and the depiction of hell did not exist until Dante’s Inferno. Of the mentions of a “hell” in the Bible, it was described as both being buried 6 feet under the ground (the Christian practice of burying the dead on consecrated ground), or being burned in the sea of lava. Also per the Bible, no one would be in any form of a hell until after judgment day, which has not occurred (and never will). That’s why the concept of hell should have no sway on anyone that bothered to actually read the Bible, because “hell” doesn’t exist.

Genesis narratives of the Creation and Flood were written, like the Babylonian narratives they resemble, to assert and preserve Hebrew religious culture. The changes made are profound. In the “Enuma Elish,” the Mesopotamian origin story, warfare among the gods ends in penal servitude for the losing side. They weary of the drudgery, so, as an act of conciliation, humans are created to toil in their place. A goddess fashions them of clay, seven male and seven female, all nameless. Adam and Eve are “borrowed” from older myth, the “Garden” and the “flood” are “borrowed” as well. The story of the Garden of Eden, and specifically Eve's role in ticking off god, has roots in the story of Ninhursag, a Sumerian myth that preceded the Biblical tale. In the Sumerian version, the goddess Ninhursag created a beautiful garden that she cherished. She told her husband, Enki, that it would be his duty to tend the garden. He got bored and assigned his lover, Adapa, to the task. Adapa tended the garden, but foolishly harvested some of Ninhursag's special forbidden fruit, to give to Enki. Ninhursag found out and punished them both. After calming down, Ninhursag took a rib from Enki and made him a new lover/guardian from the rib. The parallels are obvious. It's also obvious that the Sumerians went forward in time and copied the divinely-inspired true story of the Jews. Crafty Sumerians!

Hell was one of the first things that bothered me as a concept when I was a devout Christian (initially raised Methodist, but became non-denominational). I clung to my faith despite that doubt, looking for other Christian sects that maybe had a different idea about Hell. So, of course, I found Jehovah's Witnesses. I didn't join them, but I read their free books which I actually really enjoyed, especially how they stripped away the pagan elements. Because I didn't join Kingdom Hall as a full-fledged JW they called me a "bystander". That added to my doubts about Christianity as truth, as well. If this religion was the only true way then why is it so divided? Why do they shun people who don't accept their particular dogma 100%? Why do they preach love, but condemn good people for being different? Also, the concept of the Holy Trinity always bothered me, too. Plus, the concept of Hell is kind of negated by the New Covenant, I would think. Maybe not.. but if my eternal fate is solely dependent on believing Jesus as my savior, despite no evidence of such a person existing outside of the Bible, then I can't be on board with that. The only source that says I need to be "saved" (from Hell) is that book, and that's not enough for me. I wasn't just a casual believer, I was intensely devout, and studied several versions of the Bible with the intent of eventually starting my own ministry. But when my logical mind started to kick in, and doubts started to pile up over so many scriptural inconsistencies, and being ashamed of fellow Christians who were so judgmental, I couldn't call myself Christian anymore, and I couldn't believe in a God that contradicted himself between testaments. It all seemed like a fable to me in the end. And it was scary to de-convert. Not because of social and familial repercussions, but because I had believed in it for so long. It was a fear of change, because being a Christian was my life. I didn't become atheist except in the sense that I no longer believed in any deity, I stayed spiritual in a more pantheistic way. I didn't want to jump on another religious bandwagon, though, for fear of going through the same thing again. Like they said in the movie Dogma, I don't believe, but I have a pretty good idea... but even that is fallible. I still consider myself a spiritual person, but not in any religious or supernatural sense. I certainly reject the concept of Hell, and Heaven. I reject any mythological concept as fact. If there is any level to reality that is "spiritual", it isn't supernatural, but just another level of reality that cannot yet be measured, and perhaps never will. And that's good enough for me.

TheraminTrees had made a good rebuttal relating to this Hell bullshit in one of his videos. Severely paraphrasing off the top of my head here: "Stealing an apple is going to have far more of an impact on someone who only owns one apple than someone who owns 50 orchards, and the punishment should fairly represent the level of transgression they've committed. If a finite transgression is made against something that equates to infinity, the punishment doesn't become infinity, it becomes zero". Similarly, stealing $10 would barely put a dent in a billionaire's bank account, and pulling up a small patch of grass isn't going to do much to a prairie. An omnipotent, omniscient immortal could not in any way be slighted by such finite, fallible mortals that could ever warrant eternal torment.

If hell is eternal then there is no atonement, cause by definition you never atone. It is simply unfair punishment, in other words, torture.

Eternal punishment for finite crimes... That's what is wrong with the concept of hell.

eternal torture for finite crimes (especially arbitrary "slights" against an omnipotent god) is NEVER morally justified. it seems MUCH MORE like a human-created system from a more primitive time (the bronze age) than it seems like an infallible supernatural system.

Oh, that's actually quite easy: - winning the lottery: good - not winning the lottery: not good - helping an old granny over the street: good - not helping an old granny over the street: not good - having a headache: not good - not having a headache: good - millions of people dying because of a natural desaster: not good - nobody dying because no natural desaster: good
