Some very uncomfortable books in May! Islands of Abandonment sounds very interesting!! And I'm loving that fireplace!

Yes it was a mixed reading experience. Islands of Abandonment explores some really interesting and varied places across the word. Humans have certainly had an impact on the earth 😥 The woodstove is lovely in winter, especially when our boiler broke last year and we had no heating in the house 😑

I didn’t know there was a version of Great Expectations with Matt Lucas narrating it…. Gonna look on audible NOW!! I loved David Copperfield, it’s big but quite easy to follow as is definitely a page turner so you never feel bored.

The Gifts sounds great! China Room I remember being really polarizing and it wasn’t out here yet so I completely forgot about it by the time it did come out here. I really liked Persepolis too. Heard good things about Islands of Abandonment!

Crying in H Mart was a very meaningful book to me because I lost my mom to cancer as well. It's a tough experience to have. I've found in my case, that reading books about people losing their moms has been super helpful. I also know that not everyone wants to read about loss so close to their own. I love Persepolis. It's my favorite graphic novel. It is certainly dark.

Hello - I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I just don't think I was prepared for it and it brought up some memories from 10yrs ago I wasn't quite ready for. Lovely to hear from you. I hope you are doing okay 😀

So I'm really behind on watching booktube videos LOL! But it was great to hear some of your thoughts about Great Expectations. That was so fun! I also read and listened to the Matt Lucas audio version - that was a great narration. As far as what to read next - if you wanted to try one of his chunkier novels, go for the Pickwick Papers. It's very comical, and a lot of it is episodic in nature so it's a bit easier to dip in and out of if you wanted some time away from it.

The Great Expectations readalong really was great. Thanks again for hosting 😃 All the videos you made were great. Pickwick Papers sounds like a good idea as a place to start with one of the chunkier books. Thank you so much for the suggestion.

Fair enough to DNF a book for now! I have Crying in H-Mart on my wishlist. I'm glad it was an interesting read. Good to know about those parts, thanks for mentioning that so I know that going into it when/if I buy and read it. Yeah that makes sense it's not a book you want to revisit. I found Persepolis very informating and interesting too! Aww that you couldn't continue in The Crossing because of someone else requesting it. I hope you can continue in it some time.

Yes definitely some triggers for me with Crying in H Mart. I think you were one of the people who had recommended Persepolis. It was really interesting. The Crossing is still on my library wish list so I hopefully borrow it again in future.

I think you did the right thing DNFing Somnambulist by Essie Fox 😳 and your CWs for Crying in H Mart are super helpful. I'm sorry you ended up entering that book blind and experienced some unexpected emotional triggers. Islands of Abandonment are on my physical TBR! And I've never read Great Expectations, but now I am interested in reading it!

Another entertaining and informative video - thanks for sharing. The only Lawrence I've read is 'The Rainbow' and it had me hooked from first page to last; I've also seen the Ken Russell film of 'Women In Love' (great film!) and have that marked down as my next Lawrence novel to read. I definitely also want to read 'Lady C', so I guess I'd better get my skates on! I'm so glad you enjoyed 'Great Expectations' - it was my first Dickens read a month or so ago and it made me interested in trying more of his work. Like you, I'd previously found his 'chunkiness' a little off-putting and I guess we simply have to accept that it's just part of his style to over-write from time to time. My own temptation for a next Dickens work is 'Pickwick Papers' as, despite its length, it seems to be a sequence of relatively self-contained episodes/adventures, which might help in progressing through the novel. And of course 'David Copperfield' is another obvious candidate for a Dickens recommendation. Thanks again for the video and I hope you came through the heat-wave relatively unscathed - my family in Southport were about 15F hotter than me in Florida for a couple of days, and that doesn't happen very often (but of course we have air-conditioning here and that makes all the difference). Best wishes, Brian.

Hi Brian - I may give Lawrence another go in future but I didn't want to force myself to keep going when it hadn't engaged my interest. I am so pleased to hear you enjoyed Great Expectations as well. I'm interested to hear what you think of whichever Dickens you go for next. Like you say, you just have to go along with the over-write and indulge him 😂 The heat was intense for a few days. Strange to experience a hot wind in the UK on a very hot day. We just don't have the infrastructure for the heat, as you know. We are back to rain again now though but the land and the wildlife are grateful for that. All the best 😀

Hi Debra, I just picked up lady Chatterley’s lover and a used bookstore. I’ve read some DH Lawrences books, plays and poetry. Some of it was very good and some I had to DNF. I think it’s hard to read a classic on audio cause of the many characters etc. sending aloha your way

Hi Marilyn - yes I agree, classics are easier to grasp when read in them physical form. I have been reading the book and listening along with the audiobook with some of my classics. That sometimes works well for me. I hope you enjoy reading Lady Chatterley’s Lover.
