Interesting selection! We listened to 'Where Angels...' last year and pretty much tje same as you. Love his 'Howard's End'. I've added Tony Britton's 'Jamaica Inn' to my list, not having read it. Brighton was my town of birth so I might read the Octopus one too!

I suppose Where Angels was his debut novel so room for development in his other books. Interesting to know you enjoyed Howard's End. Tony Britton's narration definitely added to the books atmosphere. I managed to borrow it on audio from my library. Octopuses are just fascinating 🐙🐙

Hi Randi-Lynn - I am so sorry for the delayed reply. I have only now returned to my channel after a much longer break than I expected. I hope life has been treating you well and you have been reading some great books. I am hoping to get back to catching up with some of the videos in my subscription feed soon. Now I am feeling a bit better and hopefully can get back to reading again. I missed the Booktube Community.

Glad you enjoyed Lonely Castle. It´s a wonderful book but with some difficult topics indeed. Love your journal 😊 So happy to hear you also liked Jamaica Inn! 🥳 I agree with your point about the "spoiler part" but in the same time I understand that that´s unfortunately how books (sometimes) were written in the past. Hopefully current literature is much more progressive in this.

Just finished Jamaica Inn today and you are so right! Knowing what books from that time period are typically like I just knew from the moment he was introduced what was going to happen.

Yes - I know it was a common approach in older books but I just found it very distracting. As a contemporary reader it really stood out. Besides that I really enjoyed the atmosphere, setting and story.

I read Jamaica Inn about 5 years ago and wasn’t as critical as I am now. If I would have read the bits that you said about now it probably irritate me much more. That being said I did enjoy when I first read it. Love that you read the Octopus books 😊

I still loved Jamaica Inn, I just found it distracting and was a little bit disappointed but that's a reflection on how attitudes have changed and developed over time. The atmosphere, setting and plot were fantastic. I have a new found love of octopus 🐙🐙

The only one of these that I have read is Jamaica Inn. I loved it. I can definitely see what you mean about the physical description of the villain. I remember thinking as I was reading it, that an author would be frowned upon for such a description today. But I always like to take things in the context of when they were written and the slightly un pc descriptions always just make it feel more of that era for me. I found the vicars character wonderfully creepy. I had guessed early on that there was a lot more to him than was being let on.

I loved so much about Jamaica Inn - the atmosphere was brilliant. I can really see why it's so synonymous with that part of Cornwall. I couldn't stop listening then the modern reader in me just got distracted. It's interesting how as contemporary readers we are able to guess where plot lines are going. I had a similar experience with Great Expectations. I think it shows that these authors led the way in plot/twists etc that have since been built on and developed. For that reason it's important to recognise their skills and how they influence writing today.

I loved Lonely Castle but I can see what you mean about it being a bit long. The only EM Forster I've read is Maurice which I loved. I DNF'd Jamaica Inn recently but I have read it a long time ago. Really interesting to hear your thoughts because I hadn't remembered those aspects about the novel.

Great to hear about your recent reads! I keep forgetting to talk to you about Jamaica Inn! 🤣 I will leave you a message about the point you raised. Hello Debra, You are a fantastic booktuber! The way you describe the books: chefs kiss. I also Read Jamaica I 21:13 21:13 Inn Innin l 21 21 21:13 21:13 2 with Nikki and I have the same feelings you did which I won’t go in to know because I don’t want to spoil anyone. I also didn’t like Violence against women but it was well written and exciting in general. I haven’t read the EM Forster you did read Howard’s and with Jack and Berna and I really loved it and thought he pulled off that same theme but with women and class much more successfully than you mentioned. I have a room with a view and also would love to read Maurice. I watched the movie based on his book a passage to India and watched Howard’s and a long time ago but it was very different from the book. I laughed when you mentioned a 1953 book being historical fiction because I was alive😊I guess I’m a museum piece and sometimes I feel it. Take care and much Aloha friend

Hi Marilyn - I am so sorry for the delayed reply. I have only now returned to my channel after a much longer break than I expected. It is so lovely to return and find some comments to respond to. Especially your lovely feedback about my book descriptions. Although I have lost my reading skills but hoping they will return soon. I hope life has been treating you well and you have been reading some great books. I recently got Maurice on audiobook to listen to at some point. The passage of time and books becoming historical fiction can be a bit of a shock. You are not a museum piece - you are a treasure Marilyn 🥰

Thanks for sharing your recent reads with us - and thank you for the considerate warning about the spoiler for Jamaica Inn. I haven't read the book as yet but have a feeling I would like to in the future, so I put you on mute (sorry! LOL) while the spoiler alert was on the screen. The only Forster I've read was last year when I read 'Passage To India'; I enjoyed the book and thought it dealt sensitively (albeit somewhat pessimistically) with the issues arising from colonialism. It's not a hard book to read and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in this aspect of British and Indian history. The second of your octopus books really had some nice artwork; one aspect of octopi (oops sorry, just seen your official finding that it's octopuses) is their amazing intelligence. I've seen videos of specialists interacting with octopuses and they really are quite bright - the octopuses, that is, not the specialists 🙂 I'm currently sorting out my two main reads for March and I think they might well be Jane Austen's 'Northanger Abbey' and Edith Wharton's 'Age of Innocence' - with one of my January books (the extremely chunky 'Middlemarch') now stretching into a third month to join these two titles. Best wishes, Brian.

If reading another EM Forster, go to 'A room with a view' next. It's wonderful and the film is so close to it. I found Howard's End unbearably boring and couldn't get very far with it.
