I have hundreds of unread books which I find both exciting and a little stressful. During the pandemic, I went on a book buying binge (online). I work full time, fortunately through the pandemic, so I didn't have extra time to read..I am excited for the stories that await me and I LOVE my library.

Hello😀 I am so sorry for the delayed reply. I have only now returned to my channel after taking a break. I found myself with no books I wanted to read when we first locked down for months. But the search for recommendations brought me to booktube and down the booktube rabbit hole I went 😂 I am still a bit overwhelmed by all the books I want to read but I have been struggling with reading, which hasn't helped. I also worked full time, it was very stressful but grateful to still be employed. Outside of work, I spent hrs looking for books online that I might one day read. Libraries are just the best places. I hope you have been reading some great books.

This was interesting 😊 I think it’s like anything whatever number makes a person happy is what they should have. You have made me want to count my unread books. I honestly haven’t got the foggiest how many I have 😵‍💫I have a small immediate TBR which I keep separate but other books on my two other larger bookshelves which I am not fully aware as to how many are unread. 🤔 Gonna go count!! *I have 90 (which includes books I have stolen from Em which is a LOT 😂) Thank you for opening up about this with us 🥰📚❤️

I hope life has been treating you well and you have been reading some great books. I am hoping to get back to catching up with some of the videos in my subscription feed soon. Now I am feeling a bit better and hopefully can get back to reading again. I missed the Booktube Community.

I fully welcome this bookish confessional! I love your facial expressions as you reveal some of the bigger numbers 😆 I could fully relate to them, so you are not alone! This video felt like such a nice chat with you 😊Rather than a particular figure, I personally gave myself a percentage goal. For instance, I am hoping that at least 33% (1/3) of my have read list in 2023 will be from my physical TBR. This allows some flexibility to read library books, friends' recommendations, or anticipated releases, etc. Good luck! Can't wait to watch your progress with this.

I'm so glad I'm not alone 😂 It has been really useful to take stock. Another Booktube friend said they were doing 1/3 of books off their tbr too. I really like this idea because then I have 1/3 from library and 1/3 on audiobook. Which is a really good balance across all my books. We can support each other as the year goes on 😃

I have 120 unread book on my physical shelves. I have been tracking my balance monthly for a couple of years and I really enjoy it. I would never want a zero TBR! But I like keeping track of the overall number which sort of keeps me focused on what I truly want to be reading.

It was really interesting hearing about your acquisition process and projects, and how it has moved to a new phase of reading. Personally I enjoyed a modest target number of 'read what you own' , but everyone's different - as long as it isn't a burden! Celebrating what you read sounds ideal! I get some books for the look of them and their history which is a bit different I suppose. Poetry and non fiction get to stick around for revisits but novels are a shifting population.

Hah I’m definitely an options person and in a worse boat than you, I’m at ~250 excluding my mini classics 😅 I even was considering a bin under the bed before I snapped back into reality 😬 The counting was painful but eye opening 🙃 Good idea to sort them into categories so you can easily see where the extra books are! I have a feeling like my world lit is where the bloat is too. So yes, I’m planning a very similar goal! I still haven’t decided on a number but I was thinking about the goal of clearing an entire shelf. So less numbers and more about physical space.

Everyone's library should be different, but I love that you believe as I do, that the library is unread. I also unhaul/donate books I've read. My taste in reading has become more hardcore, meaning, I'm less tolerant of reading books I'm not enjoying, so I dnf often. Last year I unhauled over 100 books. I really enjoy "shopping" my own shelves and see which books I'm still excited to read. If I'm not excited to read the book, it needs to leave. The year 2020 was the first year I'd read 100 books. I don't like having a deadline from a library, so I don't like getting all of my books from there. When I worked and had younger children I set a goal of one book a month. They were usually from the library. I couldn't afford to buy books. Now I set a goal of 52 books a year and however many books I read in a month is usually the amount I try to unhaul. If I dnf, then the unhaul is higher. I think a target goal is good as long as it isn't obsessed over.

I just checked my very lengthy TBR list... I have 460 books listed on it LOL! Now I don't own all those 460 - some are books I want to read but don't own yet, and some of them have higher priorities and some are listed as books or series I want to read maybe sometime down the road. I think I might need to do a rearrangement, reordering, (and maybe deleting!!??) of this TBR

Very interesting to hear the 'confessions' of a fellow book collector! Although I had to leave behind about half of my books when I moved from England to Florida, I still have hundreds in my still-expanding mini-library over here. I'd guess that I have somewhere close to 200 unread fiction books - and maybe the same number of unread non-fiction books - although lots of these are on subjects like cooking (lots of Delia's books) and chess, which are rarely, if ever, meant to be read through completely, but more often dipped into. The oldest unread book I have is Lynne Reid Banks' 'The L-Shaped Room' which I bought in 1973 and is still awaiting a first read some 49 years and 4,500 miles later! I just love having my own selection of books available at the drop of a hat and it doesn't bother me that a proportion of them will still be unread when The Big Man upstairs eventually closes my library door behind me for the very last time. I try to set myself an easy target - 2 books a month, one classic and one modern. This month it's Joseph's Conrad's 'Lord Jim' and Flaubert's 'Madame Bovary'. Last month it was George Eliot's 'Middlemarch', which has spilled over into this month (it's a very, very chunky book) and 'The Plague' by Albert Camus - which unsurprisingly had a lot of similarities with what we've all been experiencing since 2020. It wasn't a comfortable read but it was definitely a rewarding one, with a perhaps surprising amount of upbeat sections. A low target of two books gives me some slack to add another item, or sometimes two and I would personally recommend this rather than setting a too ambitious target which might ratchet up the pressure too much. Anyway, my keyboard's about to overheat so I'll finish by thanking you for the video and sending my usual kind regards, Brian.

I'm pleased to hear you also have a good supply of books in your home. Books help to make a home for me. I can't believe you still have a book from 1973, you've taken it to Florida and it's still unread 😂 I imagine The Plague is very interesting and that many human responses and behaviours were the same back then as they were in 2020. It's not a book I am inclined to read. I also actively avoid any pandemic reads or anything too dystopian. 2 books a month is a really good approach with room for more sometimes. All the best Brian. I have counted all my unread books for very similar reasons. I had 185 in all formats (physical, ebook & audio). I am being more conscious to read what I own, but not on a strict ban. I want to get mine down to under 150 over the year, but don’t have a specific plan on how I will do it.
