Love the Makumbi book. Enjoyed your thoughts on all these books but most of all for The First Woman. It had so many themes to ponder on, and I so enjoyed it.

Glad to see you back making videos matey 🧡 The Fruit of the Drunken Tree sounds really interesting. Colombia is absolutely a country I know very little about. I really enjoyed our buddy read too. 🥲

Reading around the world sounds so cool 😊 I am very much aware that I am limiting myself when it comes to reading books from "around the world" need to incomporate more countries into my reading! I really liked reading Henna Artist with you! 🥰

You certainly earned quite a few air miles in your travels with those books 🙂 It's a fascinating way to bring some otherwise out-of-reach places and cultures into our lives. Personally, I don't deliberately pick any my books on the 'read around the world' basis, but I notice that my projected reading list for 2023 in any event includes Russia, France, Colombia, USA (obviously) and the UK (also obviously) - and incidentally it looks as if my 2022 reading will conclude with Germany. If I was allowed to select only one country, I guess it would have to be the UK - but that would be a bit of a cheat, given that the first 53 years of my life were spent there. So, to select a country truly foreign to me, I think I might plump for Russia with all those great classics and plays (just Tolstoy, Dostoevsky and Chekhov alone would provide a lifetime's reading). Hope December is good to you and brings continued improvements in your health and some rewarding reading. Best wishes, Brian.

Hi Brian - I am enjoying trying to diversify my reading and I've learnt quite a lot from some of the books I've read. You are organised with a projected reading list for 2023 😃 Russia is a great choice. I think there would be lots of great books to choose from. I am a bit intimated by the idea of Russian classics.

Oh I liked the henna artist. I can’t say it stuck with me much, but I remember liking it. Cool project! I sometimes wonder how many countries I’ve read from. But it seems like a lot of work to figure it out

I did enjoy The Henna Artist overall just a little bit too predictable. Some countries are easier than others to find books for. Besides books I already own, I am limited by what my library has. But I am enjoying trying to diversify my reading. I have got a lot out of some of the books I've read so far.

You read many books I have on my TBR and it was great to hear your perspective. It makes me want to pick them up more. I read Fruit of The Drunken Tree during a time I was really sick and in the hospital and it moved me to tears. It's very sentimental and nostalgic for me.

Hi Joan 🤗 it's lovely to hear from you. I'm so pleased you feel encouraged to pick up some of the books from your tbr. Fruit of the Drunken Tree was a very moving book for me too. There's so much in it and a lot to reflect on. I imagine not the easiest book to read while in hospital. I hope you are keeping well.

I love this challenge, it was great buddy reading with you. I've read Kololo Hill, not a bad book, but not the best either - it did teach me something about a history I knew nothing of. One country, I was tempted by Nigeria, but India, so many different cultures within one country, a rich pool of literary talent, probably the biggest after the US and UK and they're an emotional bunch of writers over there.

Thanks again Scott for reading with me. Nigeria and India are great choices. I find India such a fascinating country with such an amazing mix of culture and history. I appreciated your thoughts on Kololo Hill. I'm probably going to read it later this year with Nikki to carry on from reading The First Woman. If you ever want to do another buddy read together in future, just let me know.

As you know, I loved, loved, loved our buddy read! What a book! Thank you for your brilliant review! I will be using it to remind me of everything when I make my “best of 2022” video! 😂 I love the way you do your reviews! I agree with you re The Henna Artist; I really enjoyed it but only gave it 4⭐️ due to predictability, whereas all the other women in my book group gave it 5⭐️! By the way, I have a physical copy of Kololo Hill, which we could tackle after our Vietnamese one, if you like x 😊📚

Our buddy read was a bookish highlight of my year 🤗 🥰 Thank you so much for the feedback about the way I review books. I was a bit worried that this video was too long and people wouldn't want to listen to me waffling on about books 😬😂 I was put of continuing with the next book after The Henna Artist because of the predictable plot. Oh yes - you have Kololo Hill 😃 I'm definitely up for reading that together after we go to Vietnam together - sadly not in real life 😜 It will be a great continuation of our discussions about Uganda. We will also both be tackling books of our physical tbr. I can borrow it from my library. Yay 🤗

I'm also doing a read-the-world project! I'm going alphabetically (currently on G) but I keep a spreadsheet for future countries and I've added The First Woman for Uganda! Might be a while until I get there, but I'm intrigued from your review!

I am so sorry for the delayed reply. I have only now returned to my channel after taking a break. I love finding new booktubers who are also reading around the world. I haven't had much progress lately but I am always looking for new recommendations so I will be watching some of your videos soon. Definitely recommend The First Woman for Uganda. I also love that you have a spreadsheet - a real sign of a fellow booklover 😀

I'm so pleased you enjoyed Kololo Hill. I think it will give an interesting perspective compared to The First Woman. Japan is a great choice. It's also a country that has a lot of translated works available in the UK so I have quite a bit to choose from at my library. I am planning to start The Lonely Castle in the Mirror soon. Have you read it?

Lots of interesting-sounding books here, none of which I've read before. If I could only read from one other country I would probably choose Japan as I tend to enjoy most of the Japanese books that I read from different genres and I find it a really interesting country.
