I didn't dislike Persuasion. I'm just not that into romance and posh people 😂 Away with the Penguins was just a nice easy listen to help me get to sleep. It's good to read more books with older protagonists too.

Chevalier's novels are quite slow paced but well researched. My favourite so far has been Remarkable Creatures. All the best for the new year to you too 🥰

Lovely selection of books! I’m hoping to read the follow-up Call of the Penguins in January! 🐧 ❄️ I really enjoy the writing of Tracy Chevalier; I read Burning Bright many years ago and I had completely forgotten the plot. I may try to reread some of her books and I have Remarkable Creatures on my shelf 😊📚🎄

Remarkable Creatures has been my favourite of Chevalier's novels so far. It's a slow plot but really interesting as it's based on real women who are not recognised enough for their achievements.

I love that cover of Cranford. I'm not a big classics reader but I'm inclined to try that one on some point based on your review.

It's very simplistic because it's daily meanderings. It's only a short read too. But it captures a time and a place. I enjoyed the humour. I adore the cover. The 2 woman in the painting have got some amazing stories to tell!

Hi Debra, Away With The Penguins sounds like a lovely cosy read. I will add to my tbr. I have just finished reading Alphabet of Thorns by Patricia Mc Killip which I really enjoyed! It is a very whimsical fantasy/ fairytale type story with strong female characters. I don't know if it would be your sort of thing? But it has made me want to check out more of Mc Killips work.

Hi Rebecca 🤗 - I hope you enjoy Away with the Penguins. I've never heard of Alphabet of Thorns or the author. I do like strong female characters and enjoy whimsical fantasy sometimes. I'm definitely going to add the book to my list and find out more. Thank you so much for the recommendation 😃

A nice selection of titles there. I re-read 'Cranford' last year and so much enjoyed returning to it that I bought 'North and South' and that is now on my classics reading list for 2023. I liked 'Cranford' as a charming (but not superficial) read; however, from the little that I know of 'North and South' I'm expecting that to be a somewhat more hard-hitting work. 'Persuasion' was my introduction to Jane Austen in the late 1970s when it was one of several titles covered in a night school A-level Eng. Lit. course that I went to with a young lady I worked with and on whom I was rather keen (I think I mentioned this story in a comment on one of your videos where you covered one of the other titles on that course - Hardy's 'Return Of The Native'). I didn't really take to the book as I found Austen's writing style somewhat dry - the fault was within me, not her, of course. However, in the last eighteen months I've read 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Mansfield Park' and have at last found myself warming to her, so much so that 'Northanger Abbey is on my 2023 classics reading list. Talking of 2023, I've made an early start on January's classic, which is the extremely chunky 'Middlemarch' - just over 800 pages in my Penguin hardback edition. If I can get through 300 pages by the end of December then effectively it will just be a normal(ish) length read for January. Anyway, I meander too much again - thanks for the video and best wishes for Christmas, Brian.

I thought Cranford was great. I then bought second hand DVDs of the TV series. I remembered watching it years ago and enjoying it. I think it's an adaption of 3 of Gaskell's novels. I am interested to read North & South too. It's on my list of 50 Before 50. I will probably give Pride and Prejudice a go at some point. Although the premise of Northanger Abbey does interest me. Your doing well with the chunky classics. I'm still struggling with reading physical books so I'm not reading any classics at the moment. I am starting to make some plans for next year though. I hope you and your family have a really lovely festive season. Looking forward to chatting books with you in 2023.
