A very different (and interesting!) deviation from your normal type of video. I've been interested in plants and gardening since I was a young lad (we're talking late 1950s). I remember a day out from Southport to Rivington Pike in Lancashire with my Mum & Dad and sister and two brothers - all crammed into a Hillman Minx car. On the way home we called in at a garden centre and I used my pocket money to buy a set of four gardening books (one covered Dahlias, I forget two of them, but the last one dealt with the cultivation and uses of herbs - both in cooking and also for medicinal purposes). Three of the books had to be left behind when I moved to Florida, but there was something about the herb book that had always attracted me and that one now lives with me in temperatures where a lot of the herbs covered in the book simply can't survive - although the book itself is still doing well, having survived over 60 years. There's certainly a lot we can all learn about and benefit from traditional uses of plants for medicinal purposes - even such mundane everyday aspects as the morning coffee that helps to give many of us a 'lift' in the morning, or the camomile tea at the other end of the day that can relax and help to ready us for sleep. Thanks for taking the time to cover some books dealing with this fascinating topic. All the best, Brian.

Hi Brian - my Dad used to drive a Hillman Imp 😀 You are so right, it is such a fascinating topic with so much we can learn. I think we take a lot of plants for granted and often forget about the many benefits. It's wonderful that certain books still have a special place in your heart. I hope you and your family are all keeping well. Take care

Hi Debra, I love the healing power of trees. I’ve always loved trees and been drawn to them. Nature is healing hands I’m grateful that I live in Hawaii where it’s so abundant and beautiful.I have a tree in my front yard that’s 40 years old. I feel very close to that tree because my children used to climb it and it was actually a present when my youngest was born. I’m very interested in healing books. Thank you for your video. Aloha

Hi Marilyn - sorry for the delayed reply to your comment. I really enjoyed reading your comment and finding out more about where you live. It sounds lovely. I always feel better around trees and nature. It really is healing. I was so sorry to read your post about the loss of your dog. It's heart breaking. Thinking of you. Take care

Wow that is quite a pile! Nice to see the inside of these books! Really interesting. Some have great pictures or illustrations, nice to see! Because I use medication, I have to be careful with using herbs for medicinal purposes and always have to check with my doctor first because some medicinal herbs can have an interaction with my medication. The book about trees and healing looks interesting too. Thanks for showing these books!

It is such a fascinating topic with so much we can learn. I think we take a lot of plants for granted and often forget about the many benefits. These books are all mostly by UK authors so I am not sure how many of the plants would grow in Singapore, but I am sure you have other fascinating plants that are medicinal.

You can grow plants for medicinal purposes in a window box so it's still worth having a go. Get your green fingers out Scott 😂

You tell him Nelle - don't let Scott shatter your dreams 😂 Are you allowed to forage in Aus? Quite a few of the plants for medicinal purposes can be foraged in the wild quite easily in the UK.

Love this! The photos in the first book remind me of the guy who got all the credit for an anatomy book in the 19th c, but shafted his illustrator, who did a LOT of work putting it together...just read Bill Bryson's The Body. 😇

Hi Debra, thank you for this video. We have a lot of the same books. I absolutely love Glennie Kindred, she is so inspiring and her books so beautiful. Do you use your herbal medicine books alot? I find I go through fazes. But nearly always use simple things from my garden like nettle and dandelion, or garden herbs. Sage, rosemary etc. For teas. My recommendations would be..for non fiction...The Sensory Herbal Handbook by The Seed Sistas. They also have a new book coming out later in the year. And also The Herbal Remedy Handbook and The Handmade Apothecary by Vicky Chown and Kim Walker. Great books for making remedies and creams etc. Fiction wise...I would recommend the Blackthorn and Grim Trilogy by Juliet Marrillier ( or any of her books really) and also any of Angela Slatter s work. She has written lots of short story collections, some novels....of which All The Murmering Bones is one I would recommend and a novella called Of Sorrow and Such, which I would highly recommend. I don't usually like novellas , but this one is FAB!!

That's so lovely to know that we have many of the same books 😀 I don't use my books as much as I would like to. I have tried to grow herbs in my garden but it didn't go very well. Gardening is not a skill I have. I don't always feel confident foraging, except for the obvious common plants. I just need to make more time for it but I have found having a Booktube channel takes a lot of time. I am thinking about cutting back a little bit on Booktube so I can make time for other interests. The plant medicine is the thing I would really like to do more of. The Glennie Kindred book is probably the one I have read the most from. It's easy to dip in and out of at differen times of the year. Thank you so much Rebecca for all the wonderful suggestions on the books. I have made a note of all of them and I am going to look into all them some more. I really do appreciate it 😀

Oooh wow, what a lovely way to find out about more of your interests! I follow a number of people on IG who are into plant medicines and whilst I enjoy hearing about it, I'm not sure I can wrap my head around it! I have started dabbling in taking flower essence though, but again not something I'd study myself. Letting in the Wild Edges looks great, I like that approach of breaking things down by the seasons. Do you create your own plant medicines?

I think we take a lot of plants for granted and often forget about the many benefits. I really want to try and live more seasonally but I keep getting distracted by life 🙄 I have made some of my own infusions and few other easy things. I am a little bit cautious about foraging unless it's an easily familiar plant. It is something I have been trying to encompass more but I really need to make more time for it.
