Episode 16 - Mall Watches: Entry Level Luxury
In this episode, Cameron and Matt explore a dozen or so watches that they bought off Amazon for between $300 and $1,000. This range features watches that we call "Mall Watches," available at the large multi-brand watch retailers found in department stores, airports, and malls.

The only thing left for the podcast to be fire is a macro lens/ adapter on the close up camera so that we can see the details of the watches and their movements.
A whole episode on German watches would be great. Some very cool brands around this price point too.
I’d love to see you guys do a video on seiko considering how dynamic their line up is, and doing like a progression from their lower watches into the grand seikos. I know they also have some cool limited editions they put out like the Giugiario, love the channel
A list in the description of the watches and reference numbers from the episode would be helpful!
Junkers to me is cool. They once manufactured airplanes. (I have actually no idea if the companies are connected but they have the same names!) Also Tritium is a superheavy isotope (version) of hydrogen and releases β-ray radiation (basically shoots electrons around :P) beta-radiation can be pretty easily stopped by anything metal so if you have a metal back watch your wrist will never see any of the radiation.
Loving the affordable selection on this podcast. Awesome content.
I really liked this. It's quite applicable and I feel like its elevating my tastes and exposes me to new stuff. I have all of these on my Amazon wishlist now
Oris, Junghans and Alpina? That's one fancy mall. The average Macy's/Nordstrom is a wall of Skagen and Fossil. Mall I went to in Barcelona was interesting - they had Oris, Festina, and all those Swatch Group entry-levels like Certina and Mido

Love this podcast. Keep it up Matt! Woo
Do more. Its nice knowing the feel of each one of these. I liked hearing about the weight of them, and just going over them in general.
I don't know when I hear Mall watches I think of Fossil and designer watches, like Coach etc. this episode was actually a pleasent surprise, cool watches. The Hamilton and the Citizens may have been my favorites. If you do an episode on straps I would like to see your take on the Red Wing leather straps. I have Timex Waterbury that has the Red Wing leather strap and it's mind blowing how good this strap is and feels especially for a watch in the $130 range.

actually we have an episode on straps coming in 2 weeks, but it's a bit more general about care, options, and how to change them, and springbars and stuff than reviewing any specific straps. I'll have a look at the Red Wing straps - same as the shoe company? The shoes are very durable.
I enjoy that podcast. You guys do good job. Some cool stuff i can learn.
Great video guys, love the content
That Oris!! What a find! Great video guys!
I have that exact same citizen eco drive and it's fantastic. I got it on sale for 350. It's light, durable, automatically syncs with the atomic clock in colorado every night so its always accurate within a second, never needs any adjustment, battery always stays full even when i leave it in a dim room for a long time, the sapphire crystal and titanium are very tough. For the price it's really a fantastic piece. Not super dressy but great for every day use. Also the alarm and chrono features are nice additions though i rarely use them.
Great episode! Shout out to Cameron, met him at Luft. His watches feel great!
Glycine combat sub, I love mine. Definitely a good watch for under $600.
I own the Seiko and the Citizen in this video! I am new to the watch game but cool to see I have made some good choices!
If Archie luxury saw this he would call this an hour and a half of “shitters”. Love the podcast guys. Mr. Weiss is so knowledgeable and seems like a really good guy. A Weiss Watch is sure to go in the collection, he seems to really love and be a master of his craft.
I think Citizen is a really good buy for a watch in this price range. One of my first watches I bought myself was a Citizen Eco Drive. 10 years later it still runs great, and it is now my beater watch for the gym, or when I go shooting. It was under $500 and is fully titanium as well with a Sapphire crystal. Really good value in my opinion
Ha! I made the Global TV commercial for the Citizen Super Titanium years ago. A surprisingly nice watch. Great show guys.
Thanks for this episode; like others, it helped expand my horizons. I agree with Viriatvs; Seiko is a much more vertically integrated than many watch manufacturers, a strategy that allows easy entry but fosters aspiration to move up into higher-end models (with a notably number of in-house movements). Always being of more modest means, my first Seiko was an early 1970s SQ bought during 1979 at a police auction. My latest purchase was a SARB017 Alpinist, which fits my preference for a watch that brings a combination of history, aesthetics, or functionality, in a package I like and can afford. A good example is my next target: the Stowa Flieger Klassik 40 Baumuster B. Then it’ll be time to save for an American-made watch, most of which will push a bit beyond my normal budget. While I’m waiting for the future Seiko episode, I’ll keep searching for the elusive affordable reverse two-eye panda automatic chronograph.
I have owned my Citizen Blue Angel At-8020-03L (the least garish one) for over a year now and have NEVER TOUCHED THE CROWN! Think about that for a minute, it is dead accurate to the Month/day/second as the atomic time clock in Denver, and I have never adjusted it once. Get one of these, you will love it. (by the way, they sync daily at about 2 am)
I don't know if you talked about one (have not seen the episode yet), but I would love to see a cheap tourbillon (either the stuhrling origianal (which has been disassembled and reassembled outside china) or the binger (around 600€))
Came straight from Joe Rohan’s podcast after 5 mins of hearing Matt talking about watches, hope to have these podcast on soundcloud in future. This guys knowledge is informative as his car knowledge.

What about "Orient"? I think they look and feel much more expensive than they actually are.
The Oris 65 at under $1k is a steal . I prefer the Aquis which you can get for a couple hundred more at an AD or right around maybe under $1k from Amazon. Oris also uses the Selitta 220 movement. Other good under $1k divers are the Glycine Combat Sub (pre-Invicta) and of course the Squale 1521.
Frederique Constant has an in house movement that is the FC-700 series.. This is a base caliber that can be modified to have a moon phase, a perpetual calendar and a world timer... Very nice looking movement.

Bless you for putting me on it’s now on the buy list
These episodes are really getting very fun and increasingly more relevant to my price point. I don't know that I'll ever be able to afford a very expensive watch but this price point is completely in my range and some of these I have considered before. Those Hamilton Khaki's are very striking and I love the font on the dial. Plus I'd like to get a nice solar Citizen to round out my cheap Japanese watches for the moment. So far Cheap Watches, Spike, Cam's story, Jon, Complications, Iconic and this one are my personal favorites that I keep watching. Spike and Jon are cool as fuck. Bring them back. What about that crazy Zuckerman lawyer dude too? Is he a watch guy? He'd be cool to see what he collects and just listen to his crazy story's. Thanks for another great show Matt and Cameron.
Awww hells yeah, watched #15 yesterday and was hoping #16 would be released soon. Thanks for another great podcast fellas. W&L ftw PS: i bought a sea urchin seiko pepsi diver off ebay over the weekend, funny to see them covered in this episode ;)
For an upcoming strap episode, I recommend checking out Seiko's new silicone strap! I recently purchased the Seiko Mini Turtle SRPC with the silicone strap. Unbelievably comfortable!!! Makes every rubber strap I've used feel way too stiff.
Thoughts of the FC moonohases? I'm trying to find a matching watch for my father and I, and I really want either something dressy, like a moonphase, or something very practical like a mechanical Flieger. Do you think the FC moonphases would be worth it at around 2-3 grand?
Watched you on Joe Rogan and it led me to your channel. This episode was marvelous, woke me up to a lot of wonderful brands I never heard of. So many watches, so little time. If you haven't covered it yet, would like to hear about the gray market and would you buy from there. Noticed that Amazon(on some watces) did not offer manufacturers warranties. Great channel, thanks for all.
Disappointed on how that Max Bill went completely over Matt's head and Cameron didn't rail him in and explain the significance of that watch!
Can't wait for the Seiko episode
The Citizen that is radio controlled checks the radio signal every night at 2am and reattempts i think 3am and 4 am if unsuccessful. you can also manually check radio signal when ever you want.

I have one of these Perpetual AT (Atomic Time) Citizens. It is my everyday bullet proof (stock sapphire crystal) watch. Easy time change for new time zones travelers driving or plying. Super quick hour change without losing a second.
I am doing my best to save for one of your hand-wind field watches! Maybe I'll get one before they become vintage at this rate haha *cry* Love the show guys, I never really anticipated the release of any podcasts I listen to until now and lucky your video is release at dinner time in the UK so I can listen in my dinner hour ;)
So a little hidden gem for a cheap watch are the surplus soviet watches. I have a pilots watch, i think its vostok komandirske , its mechanical movement, has some cool engraving on the back, has a neat teal backface and you can get em 30 dollars all day long on ebay. Mine has the scalloped bezel like the "pilot" watch you showed here.
Great topic
Hey guys, what about the BulBul Pebble? I love mine. Also I'm saving to get matching Cameron made watches for me and my best friend.
How does Fossil stack up as a brand? One of my favorite mechanical watches that I own is a Fossil but have always wondered how they stack up to other brands. Im not being cynical, I love watches but am just uneducated in the varieties and features available
Just to give you guys some backround, Junkers was a large German aircraft manufacturer during ww1 and ww2, mostly known for the infamous Stuka divebomber ( the ones that had the Jericho Trumpets with the signature Siren upon attack ) and the Ju 52, a very famous tri-engined passenger plane of the period. Hence the aeronautical themed collection of the brand. great podcast, always a joy to watch and of course listen. keep up the quality entertainment.

Yea the sea urchin is a better value than the SKX series. Thr skx is a serious dive watch, but you get the same movement for cheaper in the sea urchin
I don't like the word "cheap" when talking about products. Cheap kind of implies that the build quality, materials and fit and finish are "good enough" to sell but may not function properly. I prefer "inexpensive" when talking about things on the lower end of the price point. G-Shocks aren't cheaply made, but they are inexpensive. I've always thought of cheap watches as ones that don't keep time longer than a week and are plated to look nicer.

@RexKramerDangerSeeker

Affordable has a weird association with it. You see a bunch of commercials for "affordable" insurance, mortgages, etc and they typically don't have the best terms and means there's payments of some sort. They are the last hope for many people. This is obviously my personal opinion, but I would want my products described as inexpensive instead of cheap or affordable. Cheap and affordable have a negative or compromised tone to it.

just ordered a g shock dw6900 and i really want to pick up the rays limited edition one.
for affordable watches it would be cool to cover the swatch SISTEM 51 movement (fully robotic made, not serviceable).. or something using the Bulova Accutron 2 quartz movement (smooth sweep w/ modern quartz, some crazy chronograph models that go to 1/1000 of a second). Maybe those would be good for a 'weird modern movement' episode.
Matt, would love to hear your thoughts on the looks of the Edox Classe Royale Chronograph Retrograde 357N NIN. And perhaps your thoughts on Edox as a brand?
Pretty remarkable that Matt is such a watchfan but never heard of Selita or Tritium tubes before. Not to demean himself with pleb watches lol
the 2892 and the 2824 are very simular in layout and design.. The 2892 is quite a bit thinner though and is used quit a bit as a base for a number of addon modules like the chronograph and perpetual calendar modules fro Debois-Depraz

Winston Baby well said. They don't seem to know anything about ETA or these two movements which is odd watch guys. And they should know these movements come in multiple versions and can be very accurate and well decorated too.
@thewatchmakersworkshop
6 жыл бұрын
Winston Baby you are correct. The 2824 and 2892A2 are very similar looking from the dial side of the watch. However from the back, they are completely different. Both are good movements, but the 2892A2 is much newer and better than the older 2824. I prefer the 2892A2 because I believe they are more reliable and better engineered to reduce wear and tear.
@thewatchmakersworkshop

Redbirdsfan1970 Both the ETA 2824 and 2892A2 can be finished/decorated any way the watchmaker chooses to decorate them and both can be made in chronometer grades. I prefer the 2892A2 over the 2824.
What does Cameron think of Movado watches and their history ?
I like my Tissot T-touch expert solar titanium with the titanium bracelet. It does a lot of cool shit and is feather light for a 45mm case. Solar powered tactile touch perpetual calander altimeter compass alarms dual time zones weather forecasting barometer etc. It is pretty dope.
So $1k - $2k next? And so on... I'd be interested to see your take on different price brackets.

Surprised that the Oris was that cheap. I love their pro pilot with the altimeter. Cameron, any weird functionality with the alimter?
I love a good Hamilton. I have a jazzmaster GMT H32695131, with the 2893 movement. I love it! Really want an Intra Matic 68, but gotta love the inexpensive durable field watches. But agreed on the leather straps these lower end mechanical watches come with aren't very good. But the steel band on the GMT i had is pretty good quality. (still changed it out for a leather ColaReb strap though... which I like, but would like to try a horween leather strap)

also those are 3 great choices at the end, all 3 look great. Love the look of that Oris, have a vintage Oris thats still ticking.
Could Cameron talk a bit about the "antimagnetic" Alpina states, because there are very few manufacturers that inlcude this "feature" in extended form (above DIN 8309 which is enough to mark it "antimagnetic") and Alpina doesn't explain if they do. And I expected Tissot, Certina and Victorinox to pop up in this episode, as they are in this Range and very popular. On the other hand i was surprised to see this Oris at this Pricepoint, i never come across such pricechanges.
Those seiko presage are a whole line of watches actually. The one you guys had is and has been around 300$ for a while
That titanium citizen is only 360 on amazon. Strongly considering it as an everyday watch. Really like the steel g shock to
On the spring not being affected by the firing of the gun. Its true. Imagine you and a fly are in a car, neither wearing seatbelts, and you get into a 70mph accident. You would be all over the dashboard but the fly would barely notice it happened.
24:39 I wouldn't say Seiko is a weird brand. I compare Seiko to Mercedes-Benz for instance. Mercedes offers everything from trucks and cargo vans to high end luxury supercars. Seiko offers everything from $100 quartz to the $10.000 luxury Grand Seikos. My humble opinion
@SWatchik

I think Matt's example of Toyota/Lexus would be a more on point comparison with Seiko. Mercedes, although they do make trucks and utility vehicles, is primarily still viewed as a luxury brand IMO. Toyota on the other hand, aside from obviously being also Japanese, is known for their affordable and reliable cars, but also has the manufacturing capability of creating something like the LFA.

Standard poor quality Seiko not just poor quality control. See the scratches in the upper right corner of the case. kzread.info/dash/bejne/l6J8zc2gf5i0pZs.html Never the case with any other watch or other product 1/5 price. Not a problem with Citizen or other Japanese brands. Name a car, electronic, clothing manufacture does the same. People can see low quality who are not watch people. Too many fan boys giving the brand a pass and benefit from selling the product via their sites. Too many others afraid to offend the delicate Seiko Kool-Aid drinkers because it effect their sales. Call out the objective low quality and we will all get a better Seiko at a better price

@jiffjiffernson7292
6 жыл бұрын
Geardos, I don't know what your point is. i it - Yes, Sony makes low quality products like 400 - 500 items too? Yes, brands make products at different price points with different purposes. People should have realistic expectations of each. You do not address what disposable means. I have Audio Technica $20 headphones w/o any quality issues and they sound pretty damn good. People don't need strategies to avoid buying poor quality Sony products. That is a $400-500 watch and the same is true for Seiko's across the sub $1000 price point. At least you seems objectively, accept low quality. It helps when you write it down.
I'm kind of surprised that you did t include bulova or heritor I have a rose gold version of each that look better than the Maurice both under $1000 I would also like to see a under $500 episode as well or a recommended way of purchasing/trading used watches. Other than that I really like the convo just wish I would have seen more watches you guys picked cause this is more my price range.
The FC-306 movement is a "modified" ETA 2892-A2 or Sellita SW-300 movement. The modification could be as simple as changing the finishing. A some watchmakers do this to create a sense of exclusivity that may or may not be seen as being deceptive. W
Revue Thommen is another 2892 watch in that range. I have the GMT model, which is great for trips and which I could afford to lose, rather than a more valuable watch.
Bulova and G-shock are best bang for your buck.
what do you think about the new tissot heritage 1948 chrono ? or oris aquis

"I've never heard of Sellita" ... "It's radioactive? I didn't know it was radioactive" LMAO Matt, Jesus Christ. I started following this channel because I'm a watch nerd as well as car nerd, and I saw your video with Joe Rogan talking about watches. I absolutely adore Joe Rogan, but he is a Neanderthal when it comes to watches and it was great seeing someone get him more interested in watches. You sir, say some profoundly dumb shit in these videos if you're making me feel like a genius, because a genius I am not. I'm not wholeheartedly trash-talking, I do plan to keep watching these videos. I'm just stating that the entertainment value of watching you learn about watches is akin to Ariel the mermaid showing off her knowledge of how to use a fork, meanwhile you are quite often coming off as a watch snob. This is my new favorite channel my friend, thank you for bringing us this content. Sincerely, thank you.

Jesse Evans hi Jesse. Welcome. I’m glad you liked me on Rogan. I don’t think you understand my position in this podcast. I am the student, not the teacher, and therefore dumb shit is expected, because I don’t know all that much about watches, and don’t pretend to. I have my own taste in stuff, sure, and I think a lot of inexpensive watches feel cheap and cheesy. But that’s it. so i think in order for you to have the best experience possible, you should expect me to say dumb things and then be corrected by someone who knows more than I do.

Perhaps because they are a relative newcomer, or because they began by making fashionable quartz pieces in the '70's, they don't seem to get the love they deserve. Y'all should do a "kickstarter " watch episode.
Can you explain a little more the negatives of the eta 2824 movement?
@thewatchmakersworkshop
6 жыл бұрын
Wacko C for me I think the winding mechanism is really where the 2824 falls behind the 2892A2. Automatic mechanisms keep a watch mechanical watch wound, but before wearing it you must first manually wind by the crown to get it ticking. The 2824 has wear issues with manual winding that can lead to damaged bridges that must be replaced if too much time goes by between service or if the watch is manually wound often. Also the 2824 has a less efficient automatic winding mechanism than the 2892A2. The 2892A2 is a newer and better automatic movement from ETA which also means it cost more, so the 2824 is still a great mechanical movement when priced right.
Even a seiko skx is a solid beginners watch at $200
Shooting high caliber pistols is dangerous when wearing high caliber watches. Definitely a beater watch scenario and always wear on your off-shooting hand, ie: the opposite hand with which you hold the firearm.

I was looking for a related comment to expand upon. Thanks! The physics term for what they're referring to is Inertia. Once the watch, gun, car, etc. starts moving it doesn't want to stop. Also, in the gun analogy, the hairspring has such little inertia that it moves smoothly with the gun's extra mass. Finally, the elasticity of the material also contributes to the durability. Something like brass is damaged by much less force than what it would take to damage steel or titanium.
@jasonargyropoulos2674

Also, a shotgun most definitely moves backwards when it shoots. It has to move backwards with the exact same force as the shot going forwards. Equal and opposite reaction, all that. Not sure how it translates from gun, to arm, to watch though as far as damage.
