Episode 17 - The Hundred-Watch Collection with Chef Sang Yoon
Chef Sang Yoon is a man of many accomplishments, biggest among them is that he can be credited with creating the first American gastropub, Father's Office, in Los Angeles, 20 years ago. The son of a Korean Newspaper publisher, Chef Sang has created a food empire in Los Angeles, and, like many of us woudl do, he has rewarded himself with quite the watch collection, numbering over 100 pieces, most of which live in a safety deposit box in a bank. Sang stops by the studio to discuss some of his more frequently worn pieces, We discuss very thin movements, whether the Rolex Sea-Dweller is an appropriate substitute for the Submariner on bigger wrists, and , the different dial surfaces of the AP Royal Oak line, plus some of the Royal Oak's more absurd special editions.

Enjoyed the show. Great work.
I'd love to see him back at some point, such a cool guy!
Wow!! He had a pebble. Mad respect! I used to rock a Pebble 2 but now rock a Garmin 235
Shout out to people on Etsy making great leather straps! I bought one from a guy in Volgograd.
I listened to the podcast of this episode when it came out and couldn't tell whether it was Cameron or Sang talking half the time. Those two sound so much alike. That yacht master at the end, fuck that's a good looking watch.
So rad. I have been waiting for this ever since you posted that picture of Sang's tin full of baller stuff. He was great on The Smoking Tire, and he's great here too.
You know, I'm finding myself genuinely enjoying these sponsorship ads. never thought I'd put up a comment like this.
4.20.2019... coooool day, man. Congrats Matt.
I’m screeming at this guy , dang so envious
Awesome collection! I’m in the same boat but with my collection, 160 or so are all G-Shocks and my daily beater at the moment is my GMT master II , and there are others! My G’s are more for investment purposes as most all of them are collectors editions! Keep on collecting!
Maybe there is stronger connection between watches and money than between watches and cars, food, etc....??

Well expensive sports cars and mechanical watches are equally stupid and useless. A nice used $10,000 corolla will get you from A to B just fine, safely and in relative comfort. Same as a $30 timex tells time just as well as any expensive mechanical watch, maybe even better so. People, or maybe just guys, like stupid useless shit. My ape brain loves to just stare into the back of my mechanical and watch it do its thing. I agree with the connection between cars and mechanical watches but I definitely see your point as both are luxury items that can't be justified when you have bills to pay.

Yes. And i also like to look through my display back :) There is certainly a connection between cars and watches - some kind of appreciation for "mechanical logic", for precision, for human thought - combining so many contradictions in such small spaces. Good engine and good caliber - they both are achievements, without any doubt. Money are maybe just the scale of it, just a vector in a chart. You can be equally pleased with inexpensive car and watch, but sometimes appetite comes with eating. Excuse my English.
Great show today fellas
Does anyone know the ref. of the blue yachtmaster with the rubber strap?
I'm fascinated and hungry in the same breathe. huhu. I live in Manila. I miss Father's Office.
Just realized that I have been seven hours ahead of EST and in the Southern Hemisphere; and that I would definitely need to know what time it is in Greenwich, EST and South African Standard Time and with any northern/southern Hemisphere moon phase differences. Now there’s a watch for me!
Great episode. Super cool dude. Loving the watch podcast. 🔥🔥🔥
What was in that vintage rolex box in the beginning?

Great podcast. I have a Zenith Movado Museum watch with a date in the window, i gave it to my girl friend, not my cup of tea, but i didn't see anyone wearing it before.
Hey Matt, big fan and Bay Area resident. I have a wedding coming up (not mine just attending) for $400 what kind of watch should I buy.

Okus Sidenote a SARB033 could be a good option I guess
There are 24h one hand watches with i want to say 5 min indicators. They'd be kinda cool.
Do I see a new big pilot?
What was he talking about when he told you to hurry up and you said the city is not your friend?

Mo-hammad Abunaser I'm thinking Matt building a garage to store a large collection of cars and LA permits take forever before they approve anything.

The chef's collection is very fine, but I wouldn't call it interesting. Panerai? Check. Rolex? Check. AP? Check.

He seems like he could take or leave the watches he does have too. Or maybe he just is super chill.

I think he's keeping the real special ones like the one his father gave him under lock and key. I do like the way he inadvertently dissed the host's IWC ("they messed up the dial").
that's awesome you're getting married on 4/20 congrats
the first Movado Museum watches were mechanical...later ones were quartz
LOVE the podcasts - and you guys! .. .. have been binge watching all of them. Most of your time, and guests all truly appreciate horology, engineering, design, pedigree, history, and you've been a tremendous source of info for me.. sorry: this episode is.. what.. an example of a the watch hobbv is for? the uber elite, famous and wealthy? a guy who has $million$ dollars worth of watches and throws 'em in a tin, $25,000 watches.. he's never even worn.. .. obviously just has SO MUCH money and watches he doesn't even remember he has an unopened $15,000 Panerai.. .. shows up wearing an Apple watch ? sorry.. kind of an affront to those of us who save up for, and carefully choose our watches.. Glad this is not typical show. this aspect of watch hobby ( look how much $ I have ) ... doesn't appeal to me.. Love the Show tho' !!
give me one of those left over watches wtf lmao
this sliced numeral thing needs to end. If i'm going to spend thousands on a watch, you need to spend at least enough time on the dial design that it doesn't look completely half-arsed. the 5002 on the other hand, is very nice.
Dude ORIS! I want one.. I’m gonna get that sucker !!! ORIS is independent and sexy AF!
I understand why cars and watches are related, as an engineer I just don't have the same appreciation for engines that I do for mechanical watches. Part of my fascination with watches (and personally vintage watches) is the scale and detail of the engineering and what can be done with mechanical power as apposed to other fuel sources. Got nothing against cars at all but I personally just don't find them as interesting as watches :) On that note, what movements do you guys find most interesting? I've just bought a JLC futurematic cal 497 after falling in love with the movement design and how they reinvented a lot of aspects. Any other interesting movements i should check out?

Goat Beans If you are content with an average car, I see why you say that.
Life sure is easy when you're a fucking billionaire.
The fact that this chef cant explain why chefs love watches is kinda sad. Every chef has a panerai and most chefs love watches because our lives are lived by the minute. Smart watch is lame.
36:42 don't fucking wear that watch it's ceramic! Sell it or keep it as a future collectible. They're horror stories of people breaking their lugs.
Another proof that you can't buy class with money.
You need a black mask around your camera
He is not really connected to his watches. He doesn't know and doesn't care about what he owns (ie Panerai in box) and he owns a bunch of watches he has never worn. Sure he is a nice enough guy, but really hard to connect to as a watch fan - he is more of a consumer for consumptions sake guy. Pretty shallow.
