Episode 34 - Carl Ruins Everything
Back from a short hiatus, Matt and Cameron sit down with Chef Carl Ruiz, one of the people that, alongside Cameron and Spike, really helped Matt get into watches. Carl is extremely knowledgeable about not just watches, but also people, and what kind of folks will want what watch. He also points out some things that, once seen, cannot be unseen, ever. This is our first time doing W&L live, so please excuse the mild technical glitches towards the beginning of the show.

Once I heard of Carl’s passing, this episode was the first thing I thought about. Rest In Peace Chef Carl!

I’m just getting introduced to Carl. Anthony Cumia admitting Carl was entertaining while he bashed Opie clued me in that Carl must be worth watching. That said I had to look up how he died and as a chef myself it has to be the best way to go. If you wanted to put it in laymen’s terms he died in his sleep of eating too much great food. Sad but not as sad as living till 95 on a diet of Kale and watching everyone you grew up with die....
Ruiz in Peace Carl. Gutted by the news.
RIP Carl, you magnificent bastard ❤️
Fun conversation, but half of the show is three guys pointing at and talking about stuff on a screen that we can’t see. Matt and Cameron: If you could share the screen with us more consistently, we might feel like we are part of the equation here. Or if you can’t do it on the fly, record both the camera and the screen and spend some time afterwards with some basic a/b video editing.

sorry about that, sometimes you have to click the window like 3 or 4 times to get it to come over, and when I'm producing the show and hosting at the same time, things fall through the cracks.

I agree with you . Show the pics of what you are referencing to.

would it be possible to place the picture of the computerscreen permanently on the lower center of the camera picture where you 3 are visible? So that you don't have to manually "put pictures up" and just have to manually make them full screen if you want or small again? This way you all 3 would be visible and instead of the table, keyboard and small camera we would see what you see.

WatchAndListenPodcast just set up a macro on your keyboard to switch scenes. It should be more reliable than clicking the program.

No, because then you'd be seeing other shit on the screen that I'm dealing with that has nothing to do with watches. Back end stuff.
Well, Carl not only ruins everything, he just cost me $7K. After watching this video, I bought an Eterna Super Kontiki and the Omega GMT Oreo. Very sad to hear Carl is gone, but man I loved this video and he just seems sooooo cool. Thanks for sharing this Matt Farrah
My favorite episode to date. Chef Carl is quite a character!
Man, I miss Carl so much, re-listening to this helps!
Awesome. This was like Hodinkee on coke.

Said perfectly. 😎
RIP Carl. The WALP shows with Carl we’re the best, the most fun, the most honest.
All the history episodes are cool, but nothing beats the episodes with other fanatics. It's all about the stories and the banter that surround the watches, and this episode is a perfect example. I don't know if it's a chef thing or what, but the Sang episode, Carl, and Tyler Florence, were all just amazing.

Watched it live. This was hilarious. Not the normal pretentious watch video and Ruiz speaks his mind.

So so sorry to see Carl gone. I've only in the last year gotten into watches, this was a very entertaining video. Carl had so much more to give!
coming back to this landmark
Never knew a show about watches could be soo entertaining! Carl was the cherry on top. RIP
RIP Carl. Your episodes on Watch&Listen are the best!
this is the best episode ever and the new camera setting looks 10x better
Carl is the best of the best ever heard on watches channel ! you're a lord :) now becoming an angel.
BTW, first time Ive watched the entire episode, from beginning to end. Great show, guys
Seventh time watching this in a year. Love these guys. I miss Carl and Matt!!
I think Cameron only says 3 sentences and at 53:09 Carls insane laugh really got me...... Great episode, like always!!
Fun episode, I'm glad I didn't turn it off after the first 10 minutes. Cheers.
Oh thank god… heads up Matt it’s not playing on apple podcast app. Almost listen to this when I’m making a Ruiz recipe
Best episode yet! Carl is hilarious!
My favorite episode so far!!!
God, do I miss Carl! RIP my social media friend
Brilliant - best yet
I enjoyed listening to this while driving. You were talking about watches that are excellent for the price that are not Rolex and just feel great to wear. I want to suggest a watch that is not noticed as it should be for how well it is made. It gets NO LOVE. The Citizen Signature Collection. Beautifully finished, bright lume, nice blue hands (with the silver dial). Awesome watch for around 800 or less. I have a Tissot Powermatic 80 and a few Maurice Lacroix and wanted a Miyota movement. When I opened the Citizen and set the time and wound it, the movement just felt so crisp and clean it was a visceral feel. I could feel all the gears engaging, but didn't feel like dragging or skipping like I get with my ETA movements. It makes my Swiss movements feel cheap when I set them. It just felt excellent and I immediately went "WOW, this is going to be my favorite watch" over watches three times the price.
Would have been great to have seen that Aeterna or that piano watch... :)

Carl brought me back to this podcast, was getting to dry...this was perfect...nice job
Matt, PLEASE up your game on sharing whats on the screen in front of you with all of us watching! I love the podcast but every damn episode im googling pics on my phone to see what you talking about.
one of my fave episodes... see you guys on the 4th
Eterna Heritage Super KonTiki 1973, wow. Carl is on a whole, different level when it comes to watch collection. Seiko episode with him would be epic.
I was beginning to think the show was over. 2 weeks and no new Watch and Listen sucked. I hope you guys had a good time doing whatever it has been that you have been up to. It is nice that you finally got this guy Carl Ruiz on after talking about him so much. I like his personality. This would be a great guy to drink bourbon, shoot shotguns, grill food and talk watches with. The fact that you have him doing at least 2 shows is cool. These shows are the best when you guys bring in a 3rd party to share the niches they each prefer. Cheers Matt, Cam and Carl. Thanks for another great show.
Unapologetically honest, Carl rules 🤘
Actually talked about a watch I used to have. I owned a JeanRichard Terrascope for a while. Really liked it. I've debated getting the GMT version lately.
Yeah... I’m also on the band wagon of need more Carl! Added to the comedic tone... fun episode!
Great Show Carl was fantastic!!! He needs to be a frequent guest on the show
best episode yet! want to hear more of carl :)
Excellent episode. Please be sure to bring back Carl for the upcoming epic Seiko episode.
Happy Birthday Carl
Absolutely loved this - but you didn’t show the Eterna Super Kontiki
"you ever get stuck with someone that wants to tell you how the 993 changed his life". Hot damn that is a good line
This was the best episode by far. Dude is ripping these brands. May have to watch again.
Carl needs to be on here more often. Great episode guys. Can't wait for the Rolex week.
One small thing: When you guys are pointing out something on the Mac show us what you're looking at! You're leaving us out!
That was a great episode.
Thanks Carl. Now the first thing I check is hand size and legibility. Good episode, maybe show more of the watches you look up. Otherwise awesome!
Matt what's the watch box you use?
Missing Carl. 20th time watching this episode. Classic
That Eterna watch looks gorgeous, guys
“On your wrist, a real man should always have a watch that can buy a security deposit on a new apartment, a mattress, and a good tv. If your watch can’t do that, it’s not a good watch.” RIP CARL
Love the show ! Can you please give your review on the Hecla farer please
The discount code for Crown & Caliber doesn't seem to be working
Carl is great on this show!
literally wearing a Casio right now. I'll never be able to afford to even beworthy of listening to this podcast again.
correction: he’s not just funny- he’s ROFLOL 🤣
I knew who Carl was but I never really listened to anything with him in it. Dude is a fucking riot.
Loved this episode. I have Weiss on Instagram, what others should I follow from this podcast? (Especially for the giveaway, loving the look of that watch)
You guys need to have this guest back!!!!

more carl!!
You gotta get Carl into cars, he's the perfect guy for everything, I think.
1. Great show! 2. Please do a Seiko show 3. Maybe a show of MODDING watches?
I used to Be A Nudie Bar Strip Club DJ. And the Black Light is the Dancer's Friend. There are times every guy would leave the club if the white lights were turned on.
RIP, Chef.
This guy carl is hilarious!
I have a 1966 Navitimer 806, it is 3 - 6 - 9 ....
My local WatchMaker has a Speedmaster 125 for sale! What is a good price on one of those?? I am thinking of making him an offer so any advice would be great! Thanks!
My favorite episode ever. Miss you Carl. The only man you could love for ruining watches. 🥲😄
Not sure what is going on . This is what happens when a Cuban is thrown in the mix. Also, show pics of the watches you are referencing to.
Guys the "some dude on reddit posting how to use the navitimer slde rule" has a name XD. Thanks for the shout out. Spread the navitimer slide rule love and post the link.
34 in and still cant show us what you're looking at
hey guys, GLAD to have you back, great show, funny guy!! but yes, for cryim out loud , if youre going to discuss something , take the time to google it and look at it... SHOW US what the H yer lookin at!
I agree completely Grand Seiko = Nissan GT-R. Engineering at it's best...and like he said passionless.
i do believe the GP is a Hobnail dial, NOT a tapestry?
he is the zuckerman of W and L - awesome!
RIP Carl
I have horrible anxiety, and I'm on an airplane and you fools are saving my life. Keep up the content! More Carl if you're running out of things to discuss
Matt, don't forget to show us what's on your screen.
I generally dont like Dive/Sport watches, Field watches are more my thing. But Grand Seiko! I guess i just like engineering porn.
9:43 15:29
I AM A FREAKIN' LIBRARIAN!
Carls ruined watches for me too now. RIP Carl.
Watched this one live, gonna watch it again anyways bc fk it
Carl is the total apposite of Cameron
can't speak ill of Carl, now... unfortunately!
My wife likes Patek better. Says Cartier makes her think of a zebra in white and a giraffe in yellow.
the pests
Love the episode, but fucking Matt! Talk about an awesome watch, look it up on the PC, oh look at the hands, the gorgeous dial, and DOESN'T PUT IT UP ON THE FUCKING SCREEN! EPIC FAIL!!!
Wow. RIP Brother. Carl died of clogged arteries and heart disease. I think he would of found it ironic after years of bashing Vegans for their diet. At least he lived Large for 44 long years.
a podcast about watches?
Sounds like Big Gay Al. Not an insult, just an observation.
unless the watch has rapper diamonds all over it, how do they justify charging over $100k for one?Is it Alien technology?
Fast forward to 3:30 to skip the intro
Zach at the Watchbox does a better job.... and he doesn't laugh of his own jokes 🤣😂🤣 you could learn from him!!
