Episode 34 - Carl Ruins Everything

Back from a short hiatus, Matt and Cameron sit down with Chef Carl Ruiz, one of the people that, alongside Cameron and Spike, really helped Matt get into watches. Carl is extremely knowledgeable about not just watches, but also people, and what kind of folks will want what watch. He also points out some things that, once seen, cannot be unseen, ever. This is our first time doing W&L live, so please excuse the mild technical glitches towards the beginning of the show.

I’m just getting introduced to Carl. Anthony Cumia admitting Carl was entertaining while he bashed Opie clued me in that Carl must be worth watching. That said I had to look up how he died and as a chef myself it has to be the best way to go. If you wanted to put it in laymen’s terms he died in his sleep of eating too much great food. Sad but not as sad as living till 95 on a diet of Kale and watching everyone you grew up with die....

Fun conversation, but half of the show is three guys pointing at and talking about stuff on a screen that we can’t see. Matt and Cameron: If you could share the screen with us more consistently, we might feel like we are part of the equation here. Or if you can’t do it on the fly, record both the camera and the screen and spend some time afterwards with some basic a/b video editing.

would it be possible to place the picture of the computerscreen permanently on the lower center of the camera picture where you 3 are visible? So that you don't have to manually "put pictures up" and just have to manually make them full screen if you want or small again? This way you all 3 would be visible and instead of the table, keyboard and small camera we would see what you see.

No, because then you'd be seeing other shit on the screen that I'm dealing with that has nothing to do with watches. Back end stuff.

All the history episodes are cool, but nothing beats the episodes with other fanatics. It's all about the stories and the banter that surround the watches, and this episode is a perfect example. I don't know if it's a chef thing or what, but the Sang episode, Carl, and Tyler Florence, were all just amazing.

I enjoyed listening to this while driving. You were talking about watches that are excellent for the price that are not Rolex and just feel great to wear. I want to suggest a watch that is not noticed as it should be for how well it is made. It gets NO LOVE. The Citizen Signature Collection. Beautifully finished, bright lume, nice blue hands (with the silver dial). Awesome watch for around 800 or less. I have a Tissot Powermatic 80 and a few Maurice Lacroix and wanted a Miyota movement. When I opened the Citizen and set the time and wound it, the movement just felt so crisp and clean it was a visceral feel. I could feel all the gears engaging, but didn't feel like dragging or skipping like I get with my ETA movements. It makes my Swiss movements feel cheap when I set them. It just felt excellent and I immediately went "WOW, this is going to be my favorite watch" over watches three times the price.

I was beginning to think the show was over. 2 weeks and no new Watch and Listen sucked. I hope you guys had a good time doing whatever it has been that you have been up to. It is nice that you finally got this guy Carl Ruiz on after talking about him so much. I like his personality. This would be a great guy to drink bourbon, shoot shotguns, grill food and talk watches with. The fact that you have him doing at least 2 shows is cool. These shows are the best when you guys bring in a 3rd party to share the niches they each prefer. Cheers Matt, Cam and Carl. Thanks for another great show.
