Episode 18 - Bands, Bracelets, & Straps!

In this episode, Matt and Cameron explore the world of bracelets, bands and straps! A new watch band is a great, and often affordable way to change the look of a watch, giving you that "new watch" feeling again. We explore the different types of bands and why you might use each one, how to do a basic strap change, how to care for leather and metal straps, and, potentially most importantly, how long a strap should last, and when to let it go. We also discuss the basic tools you'll need, and why you should always replace your spring bars when doing a strap change.

Love that gold Seiko turtle on canvas! Great combo, really changes the whole look of that watch (I too saw it on Amazon recently and was kinda meh about it with it's black rubber strap but wow the strap change makes the watch have so much more character)

quick release buckles are also very nice. more secure than I thought it would be. I was really worried I would accidently hit the tab and a lose the watch somehow. Wore one all week at the beach doing all kinds of beach activities and it was great.

I learned a couple things, including the Simichrome for polished metal scratches. I will have to look into that for a 2 decade old Victorinox of mine. I recently got my first NATO strap a few months ago, and it really revived my interest in wearing a watch I got 4 years ago, which had become rather boring. I had to look up how to install it at the time, so your instructions are hopefully useful to some others out there too.

Matt if desired you can clean leather straps. There are many leather cleaners in the market. You can use the same cleaners and conditioners for dress shoes for your straps since its the same fine leathers. Lexol leather cleaner is the Bench mark in the industry. Its ph balance, designed to not over saturate, easy on leather finishes and is 7 bucks at your local walmart. For shell cordovan or any Expensive leather strap I recommend Saphire renovator/ cleaner.

What sites/brands do you prefer when looking for new bands? This is more for leather and NATO straps. Also any suggestions for cleaning up some scratches on rose gold bezel? This would be a scratch just deep enough a fingernail can catch on it, but not really deep enough to get a depth measurement on.

I have a 7 1/2 inch wrist, and a lot of NATO straps aren’t quite long enough to get that fold back loop into the hoop (which I actually really like) 280mm is barley long enough to get a tiny fold back into the hoop, but it’s not very secure. Any recommendation on where to find a longer NATO? Something like 300mm would be good.

Great Podcast guys, love the topic, i am big fan of straps, i change my straps weekly also, so each time i wear a watch, i wear it with another strap. i have over 30 different leather straps, from all the material available at the market, my favorite at the moment are the Burgundy Lizard straps, Black String Ray, Grey Crocodile and Brown Python Leather. I have also couple of water resistant straps from Hirsch, didn't try them in water yet, but i am a little skeptic, any tips? I have several Natos and Canvases straps I buy my straps either from small manufacturers in Germany, or from eBay. What are your recommendations for exotic leathers? Have a great one, Abdul

If they are marketed by hirsch as "water resistant" then we guess they are coated in some type of gore-tex or other waterproofing material? Since you seem to have so many, we think you should try showering or swimming with one on, you know, for science!

hehehe won't be showering with a watch, don't want to risk damaging it by the water pressure or accidentally falling or so :D , i will actually put one in a glass of water overnight and will give you an update, if the leather changed or was affected. what we do for science :D

having worn water resistant watches in showers for many years, I assure you the "pressure of the shower" thing is a myth and not really rooted in fact. A watch that can handle 3 or 4 atmospheres of pressure won't be bothered by a shower stream.

Assuming you are using a high quality leather (read full-grain or top-grain that has been thoroughly tanned) and you don't wear the watch on concurrent days (IE allow it to fully dry between wearings). Witn normal cleaning and conditioning, there's no reason a leather strap shouldn't last 20+ years. This of course doesn't take into account taking it into salt water or other types of abuse. And requires you be into a somewhat rustic aesthetic. Most people will not take the above steps, however and will wear out their leather goods much more quickly as a result.

Its all about shell cordovan watch straps, tuffer than cow leather, since the leather is the ass of a horse. has a great deep grain and ages beautifully. Kinda pricy but there normally around a 100 bucks, not too high for the average horologist.

I've been a strap guy from the beginning. I find bracelets look a bit too sterile in most cases and often times people wear them more for comfort than looks, which is fine. Having said that, there are some pieces that look better on bracelet. Basically every modern Rolex. Yet some watches just get look too muted on a bracelet i.e Fliegers or any A. Lange.
