Episode 30 - Pilot Watches!

In this episode, recorded by popular request, we explore the world of pilots watches! The first mens wrist watches were for pilots, racing drivers, and rail men, and they typically featured large, clear numerals, and oversized dials. We look at watches from IWC, Cartier, Breitling, and more.

As a professional pilot for 45+ years (USMC, Corporate and Major airline, international), and a watch enthusiast, my favorite complication is a GMT followed by a dual time and then chronometer. Here's my current list of go to pilots watches... Rolex GMT Master 16750 purchased new by me in 1983, Glycine Airman Base 22 GMT, Sinn 104 St Sa A, Omega Speedmaster Pro, Bulova Lunar, Hamilton Khaki Aviation 42mm, Seiko SKX007 modified as a "dual time" with a 12 hour bezel insert (also a deep sea bezel and sapphire crystal), Seiko SNK809, Timex Allied three GMT, Timex Navi Harbor, and honorable mention, an Omega Planet Ocean GMT.

Hello Pilot in training here, some sort of timepiece with a second hand is required when flying IFR (Instrument flight rules). They are used as back up for approaches, turns and fuel burn things like that. Love the podcast.

Professional pilot and watch lover here.. Current aircraft cockpits are so advanced that you really dont need a watch anymore, but if I had to make a list of functions needed they would be... 1.- Seconds hand 2.-chrono 3.-easy to read 4.-scratch and bump resistant (cockpits are tiny) 5.- UTC indicator All other gizmos are an overkill, I have never used the bazel in my breitling B-1 (but they look cool) The antimagnetism, g force resistance, night vision googles visibility and all that stuff

Good show. Pilots time most actions (switching fuel tanks, flying a holding pattern) with brutally simple plastic black & white battery-powered timers that we stick to the dash using Velcro. Wristwatch is *totally* a back-up. I have 3: Aerospace (most useful), Sinn 857 utc (most legible), and Breitling Avenger II GMT (blingiest). If you use a bezel in the cockpit, you *really* want to move it fast - bidirectional is best by far.

Another airline pilot here, I wear a Navitimer AB0120 that my fiancée gave me as an engagement watch, but I can tell you I am very much in the minority. Most guys I fly with wear Citizens, Casios, and Seiko. Watches are a required part of the uniform, but most pilots don't like spending a lot on one. On another note, it may be worth noting Sinn and their TESTAF and DIN standards for a Pilots Watch.

Getting here late - was watching tonight and thought of something for the two watches running slow after sitting on bedside table... Was there a radio sitting on the bedside table? Could this be an issue with the watches getting magnetized? I ask because this happened to me... I have a radio sitting on my bedside table which isn't that big (table). So everything is close to everything... Maybe the magnet in the radio speaker is affecting the watches... just a thought.

You guys did the fuel consumption calculation wrong on the navitimer. The scale is not based on the hour markers, it’s the same whether it’s 12 or 24 hour dial. You first position the fuel rate on the outside opposite that red triangle on the inner scale, then you find the time you are looking for on the inner scale and opposite that will be the amount of fuel you will burn in that time with the given fuel consumption rate.

THE UPSIDE DOWN TRIANGLE Just spitballing here, but with 9,000 hours of flight time and still currently flying for a living... I'm guessing the "pointy thing" at the twelve o'clock position is meant to reproduce the inverted triangle we use as the "bank angle pointer" on the artificial horizon, and now digitally called the Primary Flight Display (PFD) on Boeing products. The inverted triangle is identical the the bank angle pointer, and an easy transition (me at least) to see the same inverted triangle on a "pilot's watch". The GMT function is the only complication I look for on personal work watches. The GMT is NOT USED to set "home time" or anything so pointless, most of us use it to actually set, wait for it... actual GMT or ZULU time as all flight information from your weather, clearances, flight plans, weight & balance, maintenance forms, releases, load sheets, etc. are documented in GMT. Presently, most pilots at work are sporting smart watches. Gone are the days of the ubiquitous G-Shock, Omega Speedmaster, Citizen NaviHawks, Breitlings, Torgoen, etc. The Rolex GMTs and Subs are still present with well compensated pilots and those concerned with "representing" and peacocking. That will never change. Sad though, as the last 3 pilots sporting GMTs or Subs with the Coronet had no idea what "movements" or "complications" meant let alone the differences between automatics and a quartz. To be fair, the installed cockpit clock is usually set to GMT or ZULU, but it's nice to have on your wrist when you're away from the flightdeck doing paperwork or flight planning outside the aircraft. Cheers guys, keep up the good work.

Weren't the old Pilot watches required to be antimagnetic to not be influenced while flying, and "low pressure" proof to not loose the glas when in high altitude. (even today Sinn, Damasko and i think IWC incorporate these 2 things in all their Pilot watches). Oh and the white lume dial? is already quite popular for years, look for example at the Damasko webpage, they have almost every line in this too. Today Pilots don't need a Wristwatch because for safety reasons every function of the plane is at least twice redundant (more important things 3 times) Back in time when Pilot watches were "created" that was not the case, and they had to use them for navigation etc.

Agree, but I suppose that you are paying for history. IWC was one of the handful of original German flieger watches. Unfortunately they didn’t cover this history here, nor did they talk about Stowa, Laco, Wempe or A. Lange & Söhne’s role with IWC as the 5 original WW2 German pilot watches that started the Beobachtungs-uhr style with the triangle at the 12.

i'm sorry to disappoint you but the iwc is worth every penny. you really have to hold it in your hands to understand. everything is perfectly balanced and executed... its the kind of watch you put on and its yours immediately. the ratios are gorgeous. beside that the iwc features blow-out safety in low air pressure, bombarded(!) saphire glass and a soft iron core around the movement to improve anti-magnetic properties, hence there cannot be a display back. surely iwc is a highly regarded brand, luxury of sorts, and in luxury goods the markups are enormeous. you dont have to buy it if it doesnt fit your lifestyle or aesthetics, but to imply that there isnt value for money in that watch... is simply not justified.

The only diving happening here is desk diving and cave diving. Pilot watches just seem like a style to me. All the numbers will be big/legible, there might be a slide rule and there will be a triangle on the top. To me that's it. Thanks anyways. I'm more excited for next week personally. Cheers from the central USA.

Hey guys... do not mean to sound negative, but I will, because your shows are kinda getting thin on the content! I like discussions and stream of consciousness conversations, but this show is not about abstract thoughts or existential musings! It is about very specific material objects! As such, if you are on youtube with a show, you ought to know what you are saying or at the very least be on the same page as other people serious about the specific topic! This sort of "rolling with it" and learn as we go works elsewhere, but not while you occupy my time! As someone else mentioned, you haven't touched on milestone aviation watchmakers. On previous similarly themed shows, you completely ignored the most obvious enthusiast loved brands and pieces. I am not saying you have to talk about all the things I like.... but some of the stuff is rather obvious, and you never even mentioned them. At this point, it seems your content is quite fluffy - for lack of a better descriptive word - and airy (pun intended) - very mall shopper and wealthy brat focused most of the time. You spent 7+ minutes talking about the Navitimer alone... Makes me wonder Who the show is actually for... Perhaps your carried over fans from other podcasts who are not into watches but would listen to you regardless? And the watch camera... guys, if you spent what one link of the Navitimer bracelet costs, you could get a camera and lighting setup that would allow your viewers to actually see what you are putting under that horrible thing you call a camera! Rant over!! I actually wish to continue watching you guys and I really hope I made sense! Its not hate, its a little frustration! :) Best wishes!!
