Episode 35 - The History and Watches of Rolex
In this episode, Cameron and Matt, joined again by Chef and Rolex expert Carl Ruiz, explore the history and watches of the most valuable and iconic brand in watchmaking history: Rolex. Rolex doesn't make the most technologically advanced watches, or the most complicated watches, and they haven't been around as long as many of the other manufacturers, but they are the most iconic watch brand on the planet, recognizeable the world over for their timeless designs, underwater capabilities, and overall quality.

R.I.P. Carl, you were so amazing on this episode.
The two episodes with Chef Carl are one of my favourite podcast moments of all time... What a legend this man was. RIP
So sad to hear of Carl's passing. I hope these few podcast episodes will help his legacy be remembered.
Can Carl be a regular? The three of you guys were great together. Best episode yet.

What’s with not showing a picture of the watch that is being referenced?! The show is good but fix it!

The white and red one sounds super cool. Just leave the screen split or make an inset with the other camera.

good call talking about the white dial GMT and then just not showing it. When you are talking about a super rare GMT that is very obscure, the audience totally wants to see dudes admiring what you can't see.

I'm sorry, occasionally you have to click the swap button a few times to get it to click over, and sometimes I just don't notice. When you are engaged in conversation, trying to pull things up on the computer, and simultaneously producing the show, things fall through the cracks and there is just no way to know until later. I do the best I can, and sometimes the software just doesn't agree perfectly. Thanks for your understanding.

yes, havent even watched this episode yet but: if the same thing is happening ( the entire focus of the conversation is looking at and discussing what YOU’RE looking at on your computer screen- but you forget to switch OUR view ) .. its frustrating... given the $ you appear to have ( travel, buildings, watches ) GET A PERSON to handle production details so you can concentrate on the discussion... intern, fan, minimum wage .. We love the show, take it up a notch boys, you have viewers!
I watch this 7 months ago, then 3 months later I heard a youtuber shout out a RIP Carl Ruiz. I was so sad to hear he had passed before I got to go and meet him at La Cubana Restaurant. He definitely had the best watch perspective I have ever heard.

This channel was awesome while it lasted, and the two episodes with Carl Ruiz were the best of it. I've watched them multiple times and will keep coming back, I'm sure.
This episode was where I fell in love with the Explorer 2. My favorite watch ever. RIP, Carl. You were the best.
Love it! Do history of AP next!!! You have the perfect guy to talk about it right THERE!!
This is so refreshing after watching all of HODINKEE videos a bunch of times, Carl isn’t afraid to call out bad design hahah
Carl is absolutely amazing- please get him on more! Funniest guest host ever 😂
LOOK AT THIS AWESOME WATCH!!!!!! WHOAAA DUUUUUDE................can't see it. Thanks Pal.
Matt, not sure if you get alerts on these videos, but I hope you're still enjoying your watch journey and doing well. This channel was amazing while it lasted. The only other channel with similar vibes just ended as well... About Effing Time. Thanks for the content!
Gotta have more Carl! I'm glad he pointed out the difference with the new Rolex case dimensions ... that's why I' keeping my 06' Sub
Absolutely my favorite show I wait for every week. The wife just rolls her eyes!
Are there moments in this where the stream is meant to swap to the computer screen rather than the cameras where it doesn't? I feel like you guys talk about what's on screen and then it doesn't get shown a few times :(

Look at OBS for recording, it will give you a screen that shows exactly what the final recording will look like (as well as lets you easily swap between scenes) and if you have a second screen you can have it off to the side and look at it whenever you want to make sure we are seeing what we are meant to be!
That Explorer II at 23:35 has white gold indices also, they're just painted black.
Please, please show the stuff you are talking about!

Came here cuz I seen your interview with Joe Rogan. Loved seeing all the crazy watches and enjoyed the interview
Hit it out of the park again gentlemen!
This is a damn good show right here. 👍
I spent many months trying to choose between black face and white face Explorer ii. The Rolex marketing machine really pushes white and seems to ignore black. I choose the black face because I aesthetically preferred it but struggled to understand why. The "cartoon" characteristics described totally explains my choice and confirms my suspicion that I made the right choice. Love the show!
What an education. Sorry to hear of Carl's passing. Such a personality of discernment will be missed.
I still coming back to watch this episode.. 2 years later..miss the cuban
Awesome job! Loved the Daytona bashing, I’ve always wondered why people fall over themselves for a watch that you can’t tell the time on!
i don’t know or give a damn about watches but matt and carl are so entertaining to listen to i’ve listened to this 6 times. rip.
14:05 "it was called the 'incel'" i LOST it there hahaha

From what I know 904L WAS used in the late 80's. The 16610 Sub was supposed to have came out in 1988, BUT there was a problem with the 3135 movement which delayed it. SOOO?...Rolex put the existing 3035 movements in the new 904L Sub cases for about 9 months and called it the 168000.
Hot shower water can fuck up any watch. Insisting on showering with a luxury watch on is like the weirdest middle-class compulsion
New sub from Charleston SC. Have seen you on too many automotive vids to count; fav Countach Ammo segment. Just caught your Rogan watch episode and had no idea ab the watch podcast. THIS IS GREAT my dude.
Carl was the best ever. I watch this a few times a year and never had an interest in watches. RIP Carl 🙏🏻
Why do a vid if your not showing the watches your referring too!!!!
You guys really got the camera dialed. Congrats. Now the watch part is on par with the listen. :-)
What is that Datejust with the red second hand in the middle of the screen at 2:42?
Watched this, and decided I'm going to buy a black dial explorer 2 next year. Gracias
Thank you Carl for finally being the man to say the modern Rolex case is square and awful.
That 1016 was insanely good.
52:20 904 steel was used for the 168000 case in the late 1980s. Same watch as the 16800 just different steel for the case hence the extra 0. Bracelet was still 316.
Please have carl back on the show!
Hello. Was watching older podcasts and in every one where Rolex is discussed, it's both talked about how great these watches are BUT also how many Rolex is pumping out. Many of these are probably going to be generational pieces, but is there a going to a point of over-saturation??? Just wondering. Thanks and love these podcasts!
Y'all should do a watches and history on Tudor. Good under the radar brand and you can make the argument rarer than Rolex as they have lower production numbers. Just a thought love the show guys.

@bangurowned
5 жыл бұрын
If you look at the dial of a Submariner today, you’ll see that its water resistance rating displays the measurement with feet first, followed by meters. 1000 ft = 300 m. But as with most things Rolex, it wasn’t always this way. Some highly collectible vintage Rolex models are those referred to as Meters First Submariners.

Why did you guys not show the Unicorn of all Unicorns Rolex watch to us. I am gonna try to look it up but I will not be sure if I am looking at the right watch.
I really enjoyed this. When you say “The Yacht-Master does nothing” you’re not wrong. It does as much “Nothing” as the Sub Date does. If you don’t like the YM, that’s fine, but don’t belittle it - as you’re then belittling the Sub Date too; which by the way you’re wearing!
Hey guys, it's the other way around, the sherpa wore the Explorer, and Edmund wore the British Smiths watch, it probably wouldn't look good if Sir Edmond Hillary wasn't thru and thru championing everything British.
Ya way to be boys getting all hyped on the white dial gmt and then not showing it that was fun
a great show guys. i was recently told by a reputable vitage watch seller that Rolex had sold the Fuchsia GMT Pepsi bezel for a short time, but all mention of the fuchsia on the internet states them to be faded red and blue Pepsi bezels. Did Rolex produce Fuchsia bezels?
Can someone help me out here... Matt said he has a buddy who has a guy in NC who paints watches black. I need to get in touch with this person !
No, DON`T stop with the rotating bezels, you don`t have to dive to make use of it, you can time anything you want ;)
Actually 3187 in Explorer II is same as 3186 in GMT except the fact that it has different shock absorber. (Paraflex). they both use parachrom hairsprings if we are talking late models of 3186. Additinally 3285 in new GMTs is superior to both 3186 and 3187.

It’s nicknamed president because that’s Rolex’s name for the bracelet… not because presidents wore it! Basic knowledge!! Clicking another video now!!!
FYI - crown and caliber code not working
Love the show but you often forget to show the veiewers what you're looking at!
Explorer II has mystery hands? Not really. The Zodiac Astrographic does mystery perfectly.

the shaker...
You are wrong, the Daytona didn't compete with Speedmaster in the NASA tests it was the Rolex 6238, nicknamed "pre daytona"
So... Someome needs a 2nd monitor showing what stream is actually seeing huh.
Steve McQueen never owned a Rolex Explorer.
Is it me or the Explorer II they show to compare with the nipple dial at 23:30 has somewhat weird proportions, almost as a fake? I have never seen such a fat font on the fixed bezel and even the applied markers look surprisingly fat.
Sabor Chef ftmfw
It is submarIner, not submAriner.... go to a Rolex AD and ask them.
how tf is a gmt bezel instead of dive bezel/chronometer useful. You really need to be reminded what time it is in calcutta every time you check the time?
How old is Carl? He said he bought his first GMT in '89 @ 56:18. So if he bought the GMT when he was 18 in '89 that would make him 47.

Jason Lettich Hey Jason.. I agree.. I noted it to Matt and the reply was: 80% of their audience listens to audio podcast, with a touch of attitude.. itd be like bumping the mute button for 30 seconds to the listening audience. Good show, good info, fun guys.. but if your gonna try to grow a youtube audience,... at some point up your game re: production value... these guys toss around - a $3k to $5k watch they like is “cheap”.. hire an intern for $50 an hour to improve your youtube channel ... just my .25 cents...
Shhhh..... don't tell anyone about the Explorer II... the last of the affordable Rolex's... not going to be affordable soon.
I don't listen for politics.

Another really great episode. However, Matt, I couldn't help but cringe each time you emphasized that the Deep Sea went to "thirty nine thousand feet". You are definitely adding a zero to that number. 39k feet is over 7 miles under the sea....

@@jgibson7721 I guess for some reason I didnt think it was that deep. However the Deep Sea is only rated for 3900m. For that trench dive, wasnt it specially modified and have a crystal that was like an inch thick? I dont think the normal deep sea can go to that depth
Show us the damn white face GMT!!!!!
Lol, not my favorite guest. Honestly, his take on the OysterFlex making a Yacht-Master look “small” is odd to me. This new “bigger is better” 40+ mm watch fad we have going on is relatively new and somewhat pompous. I anticipate the correction of this over the next decade or so. Guys walking around with bricks on their wrists is annoying.
Maybe just leave the camera on the screen full time? I would much rather watch you search in vain for something for 3+ minutes than miss out on rare GMTs or blacked out watches in favour of looking at your faces..
