Episode 6: Cheap Watches!

In this episode, Matt and Cameron explore the world of inexpensive watches! While it's easy to get lost in six-figure horological masterpieces browsing around on Instagram or Crown and Caliber, the truth is you can get a pretty cool watch for not much money; even a watch that's cool to watch people. We explore quartz chronographs from established brands like Timex, then move to digital G-Shocks, Russian mechanical watches, and entry-level automatics from Seiko and Hamilton all under $500! We throw in some vintage seiko and oddballs as well. Have a suggestion for a watch for our next cheap watches episode? Leave a comment!

    Recommends MVMT? Credibility gone...

As a lifelong car enthusiast I've been a longtime regular watcher of The Smoking Tire and occasional podcast listener during long drives and such(lately regular listener as well as I've found myself with a long daily commute). I've always had some appreciation for watches from an aesthetic angle but they never captured my interest in the same way cars do, to the point I was pretty much indifferent to the difference between quartz and mechanical movements. As Matt started talking about watches, I developed more of a passing interest in them and when he had Cameron Weiss on the podcast and I actually understood what a mechanical movement was, the appeal of wearing an intricate little machine on my wrist popped. Today I received my first automatic watch, a Seiko 5 similar to the one on the show(same movement I believe but more of a field watch style, an SNK803 if anyone cares) and love it. I'm afraid there will probably be more to come. So thank you Matt for introducing me to a world I never would have known I'm interested in and screw you for introducing me to another expensive hobby :).

No, no.... mvmt.? That’s crap! Do not spend your money on that. You can get a Seiko Snk809 for 100$ or less with an automatic movement and display back. Just do some research and you can find some great timepieces for not a lot of money.

The snk809 is butt ugly as a fake pilot watch. I love how people like to shoehorn their favorite watch brands into the conversation. People buy watches based on their looks, not their functionality, no one looking for a mvmt will look at that watch. God is that so difficult to understand?

Love the show, thanks guys. In my opinion a “cheap watch” is something under 100$. Sub 1000$ isn’t really cheap. Maybe inexpensive but not cheap. There are a lot of great time pieces under 1000$. I love my Casio and Vostok just as much as my Omega and Oris.

They are a fantastic watch for the price and there is nothing out there on the market like them. Now in saying that they are not a luxury watch and would not be as comfortable to wear as say a Rolex or JLC but then again what would you expect for $60. People who say Rolex are not worth it and go for a Seiko do not actually understand what most Rolexes are.

Good episode! I'd like to see this topic again for sure. If I were you guys, I'd do four more episodes on this topic. They would be: 1) All Seiko. Span the whole range. 2) Inexpensive watches part two: pieces from brands like Orient, Citizen, Tissot, Swatch, Casio, Seagull, Marathon, etc. 3) "Microbrand" watches! Either companies that use common movements, or in-house. Like: Squale, Steinhart, Laco, Gavox, Brew Watches, Monta, etc. 4) Just soviet watches, heavy emphasis on Raketa and Vostok. How to find them, what to look for, how to authenticate, information about the movements. Guest ideas: Mark from Long Island Watch, Mike and Kaz From the Two Broke Watch Snobs Podcast Love the podcast so far! Keep up the good work! Would love to see you guys go even more in depth on the affordable end, especially because there's so much there, and it's where most people start.

The new watch-cam is a huuuge improvement. It ~is~ glorious! As far as future episodes on Cheap Chronos, I think the Seiko 5 should deserve some talk. I don’t have one -been meaning to get one - but I understand they’re basically the Miata of watches. Personally I’m a big fan of the Citizen Eco-Drive and Seiko Solar styles, I feel they really lean on quartz’s strengths while offering something genuinely unique, and you get a lot of watch for the money. As a related episode sometime soon down the road, I’m really interested in knowing what to look for in vintage watches to get something solid and reliable and maybe even cool...for a much lower price point. So like the Russian and faceted Seiko but expanded into its own episode.

Miguel Garcia both movements are toasted. They both just stopped working. Gorgeous watches, bought maybe 6 months apart. One arrived with a screwed up crown, was installing at an angle and had to go back under warranty immediately. Was fixed but the watch stopped working soon after the warranty expired maybe 13 months later? The other died I believe some time before the warranty ran out but I didn’t have time. Both are now derelicts in my watch case. You can wind them and one doesn’t move at all, the other will work for a very short period then bind and hang up. No point in spending any money on them. I just learned my lesson and avoid that brand altogether. Gorgeous designs, but the movements are complete shit.

Orient has better quality control then Seiko( who owns about half of orients stock), and unlike seikos watchs of the same price orients movements are still made in Japan. I had similar luck with the iconic skx007. Nobody believed me since the skx's reliability is that of a tank.....but it happened. Have you checked out seikos sarb line? What have you moved on to?

Assuming your Omega is a mechanical watch, as opposed to a quartz watch, you can go to an Omega Authorized Dealer near you, who will service the watch and literally make it like new. If you don't want it to be like new, you just want it mechanically serviced and you want to keep its original patina without polishing, you can go to a local watchmaker or watch repair shop, who should be able to service only the parts of the watch you want serviced.

Did someone say Accutron! I just bought a refurbished asymmetrical pillow shaped with 14k gold triangle inserts on opposite sides of the case face. I haven't seen any others of this style for sale in my search and the style of this one caught my eye. Gorgeous. The first time I heard about the Space views was last month and I knew instantly I wanted one.

I have a Swatch that I picked up on eBay, brand new, for about $60, it shows the time, day of the week, and number day, the movement is loud and the second hand never stops moving, even when you pull out the crown, and when pulling out the crown, what you’re adjusting is kinda random. Overall I like the watch for how it looks and because I prefer a silicone watch band. I’ll have to watch your Swatch podcast next, loving the content so far! (Also, my first watch was an older Pulsar Solar with a silicone band that liked to pop off when hiking that my grandparents picked up at a garage sale for a dollar, it lasted me from fifth grade to eighth grade)

The Jubilee bracelet for the SKX is very comfortable been wearing it for 3 years. The clasp is very solid better than a much more expensive tissot. The downside is it makes a sound when u wiggle it hard...

I enjoy learning about high end watches and your opinions about the history of horology as well as the industry as a whole and current trends.that being said, this podcast sounded like you guys are just trying out entry level watches for the first time. I would like to recommend that you do a bit more homework and revisit the subject of entry level cheap watches. There are so many quality tool watches and affordable reliable mechanical watches from established companies that you can avoid fashion watches completely next time. Vostok, Seiko, Orient, quartz Hamilton and quartz tissot, Casio, invicta, timex, etc. I do appreciate that you talk about the practical aspects of the watches and just a broad overview instead of an in depth review of each! I’ll keep watching but you lost me at the fashion brands, they are no better than the 20$ ones on the chinese websites but they cost hundreds of dollars, huge scam, should definitely discuss quality vs price comparison of entry level pieces. Thanks for bearing with me guys!

The Invicta 8926OB is a great cheap watch with a Seiko automatic movement. It's a Submariner homage, and when you put a nicer bracelet on it it looks like a much more expensive watch.

First actual watch I ever bought was a gshock gstb400d-1a. I like the look of a g shock but I wanted an all stainless one without getting the larger more expensive ones. So far as a new watch owner I really like it, there's just something about that first one ☺️

For the quality control and swiss, to my understanding, Raketa and Vostok are popular brands that make movements that some swiss companies will use in their watches.

The Faceted crystal is amazing. I have a green and gold Orient Tri-Star with the exact same crystal...must be a 70's Japanese thing. I haven't come across that on any other watch. I know I'm late to the party, but great podcast Matt. I love watches and cars, my kind of content!

My first watch was military style Swiss army watch that my aunt gave me when I was very little, maybe 9 years old. (I still have it) My second watch was a Seiko watch dress watch that my grandpa gave to me when I was 14. I wore it until it literally broke (my ex ruined it). The first watch I bought with my own money is a Seiko ssc387 that I bought of Amazon for 200. It's a quartz watch with a V175 movement from Japan. It is solar, and its a Chronograph, with a small date window. I like it because it's solar, so it should last quite a while without service and personally I like the looks. It's quite heavy for my small wrist tho. I daily a Samsung gear S3 since I work retail and it's nice to see my notifications without having to take my phone out. Currently saving my first Swiss made watch.

The new camera is really nice. Being able to adjust the contrast is great. How about a cheap midrange automatic watch episode $400-$800? Here's my cheapo watch list for me so far. Timex Expedition beige dial, Invicta S1 Rally red dial chrono, Nixon Unit SS acetate band, and today my Seiko SSA327 open heart with the blue dial shows up. They are all cheap but hey you gotta start somewhere. Next I'll be looking at midrange automatics if I like this Seiko. Hamilton Khaki maybe? Something like that. Great show. Please make more.

I have the same Vincero but with a blue face. While it looks great and has good weight to it the pushers feel a bit cheap. Still pretty good value for what is mainly a fashion watch. Thanks for the discount code TST! One of my favorites along my Suunto core. Now i'm in the market for my first automatic by means of an entry Seiko. Great episode, looking forward to more!!!

Hi, Been watching TheSmokingTire for a few years now and was delighted to see you two start a watch podcast. Like you a while ago Matt, I’ve only recently been fully immersed in the world of watches. I was wondering whether you guys would have an opinion on a good, beginner watch to get into. I’ve been looking at vintage Seikos, any thoughts on taking that route? I’m looking at around the £150-£200 mark (which is around $250-$300)

I'm just getting caught up on your videos and came across this cheap watch vid. Your comments on "wood" watches are correct if the wood used isn't stabilized. I use woods of many varieties for scales on my knives but it must be stabilized prior to machining of any sort. Stabilization is basically just putting the wood into a vacuum chamber with some sort of resin and impregnating it, then baking it to harden the resin. Once that is done it can be machined like any metal and it will be impervious to moisture of any kind. Anyway. great pod. I should have listened to Nick Shabaz when he warned "DO NOT GET INTO WATCHES", but alas I did not heed his warning.
