    1861 is the movement in the modern Speedmaster. The watch that went to the moon housed a 321 with column wheel vertical clutch. The Heuer Caliber 11 was the watch worn by McQueen. The winding crown was placed on the left of the case to illustrate that it was an automatic with no need of winding.

    Binge watching these podcasts! Can you address the details of manually winding an automatic movement is harder on the movement vs winding a manual wind watch?

  • @WatchAndListenPodcast

    @WatchAndListenPodcast

    6 жыл бұрын

    We can, but it is not! If your automatic watch is stopped, you should start it up again by winding the crown, and not by just shaking your wrist a bunch. Automatic winding watches, at least the modern ones, have mechanisms that will prevent you from over-winding, but generally 25-40 turns will do it. My only full mechanical (non auto) watch is actually my Weiss, which has a hard stop when it's fully wound.

    The movement in the modern Day Speedmaster Professional Is NOT the same movement as the watches used by NASA during Gemini and Apollo. The Modern Speedmasters use an 1861 movement. The look of the watch has not changed though. These are beautiful watches. There are also dozens of special edition Speedmasters with different colored dials and Panda/Reverse Dials that are really cool too. The Acrylic Crystal on the Speedmasters is called Hesalite. Hesalite Crystals are what the astronauts wore. NASA did not want Sapphire Crystals. Sapphire Crystals were less likely to scratch then Hesalite, but Hesalite was much less likely to shatter then Sapphire and NASA would not want Sapphire shards in Zero Gravity. These are great videos that you have put together. I am enjoying them.

    Nicely done, Cameron! Couple comments: 1) The Datejust isn't in Rolex's sport line, and thus isn't really a sport watch, is it? 2) while Blancpain Fifty Fathoms is known as the first dive watch with a rotating bezel, Panerai made the FIRST dive watches for the Italian navy 20 years before, in the 30s; 3) Reverso was designed in 1931, not 1935

    Most of these Rolex look the same to me, so one would have done in a list of iconic watches because iconic for me is also coupled to the look. Generally i was waiting for a Navitimer, a IWC Pilots watch like the Mark 12, an IWC Ingenieur, some B-Uhr, a Panerei, a Tag Heuer Carrera, and last but not least a G-Shock to show up. And considering the criteria listed for the Moon watch: Cameron said lat time that the watches submitted were build seperately from the commercial ones with different materials. Sinn offers Watches today with lubricants that withstand these temperatures for everyone to buy.

    The Heuer calibre 11 movement was not integrated like the El Primero...The El Primero was in development longer than the Calibre 11 movement and a working prototype was produced earlier...Can't really compare the great El Primero to the calibre 11...IMO, the El Primero (and the Seiko) chronographs should be recognised more as the first auto chronograph movements, not the integrated calibre 11 movement.

    Hi Matt and Cam. I discovered your channel last week and I've been enjoying it. I would like to ask two things though. One, please improve the camera and lighting so when you show a watch up close it actually looks crystal clear and gives a great view of the watch. As it is now, the image of the watches is blurry and it's not very detailed. We don't see the watch very well. Secondly, and most important IMHO, is that you get your facts straight. You all butcher facts about the watches left and right. At some point, folks are going to come to your channel for information and they are going to walk away misinformed. For example, your entire segment on the Omega Speedmaster was littered with misinformation. There is a ton of information out there though and with some simple prep, you could have easily gotten the stories and information about the watch accurate. For instance, it was the only watch among the ones that NASA tested that passed all 10 tests. The other two watches that qualified for the test failed after the first test. The testing wasn't even close. Omega didn't win it by the skin of their teeth they won it by a landslide. Also, it has been retested and requalified by NASA at least 2 other times again beating out its competitors. It's still flight-qualified by NASA today. This wasn't the only spot where you guys had the facts wrong. So, please get the facts polished up and proper. I'm a huge watch geek and I'd like you both to succeed and help grow the hobby. Thanks for all you do! Keep the content coming.

    Those NASA test results: Fast forward to March 1st, 1965. All testing has concluded and the results were in. The Rolex Cosmograph’s Valjoux 72 stopped twice during testing and its seconds hand warped from exposure to high humidity. The Wittnauer’s crystal warped and released from the case during both the high pressure and decompression tests. As for the Speedmaster, it withstood all the tests and passed with flying colors. With that, Speedmasters were “Flight-Qualified by NASA for All Manned Space Missions”, and would go on to play a major role in the Gemini, Skylab, and most famously, the Apollo missions.
