Episode 22 - Collecting Vintage Seiko!
In this episode, we are joined in studio by Nick Farrell of DC Vintage Watches, who specializes in vintage Seiko and Heuer watches! We discuss the history of Seiko up to the 1960's and 1970's, the prime decades for today's collectors, and check out some interesting collectible Seiko's as well as what to look for, and what to avoid when buying these watches.
Additionally, we review a series of four watches from the Straton Watch Co., which are clearly inspired by the Seiko and Heuer watches of the same period.

Well done you guys. Bought my first Seiko in August 1967 at the age of 21. I still have it and it still works fine. Been collecting now for about 10 years. One thing I wish was available is some good historical Seiko production and model/movement for collectors. Knowledge is everything.
Amazing show guys. You should really interview Spencer Klein, he is the master of vintage Seiko.
Great episode! Would love to see Spencer Klein in one of the future ones. Probably the most knowledgeable guy on vintage Seiko around.
Hooray for a Seiko Episode! Would love to see another Seiko episode where you and Cameron mod a couple Seikos live on the show! Whether it be a diver or a Seiko 5 variant.
Absolutely iconic pieces here. Thanks Matt, Cam and a special shoutout to Nick. He really knows the details! Great show, already looking forward to the next episode!

Thank you for the vote of confidence! Much appreciated
Just got my first watch a Seiko SNK793. I'm on a limited budget but I'm pretty happy with it as my 1st watch.
Watch cam upgrade? WOOOO!
Great show and just bought a watch from DC. So stoked!
Really surprised nobody mentioned any *King Seikos* especially since this is one of the other luxury and awesome lines from up until a few years ago. Came out around the same time as the Grand Seiko and was an internal competition between the two. I was hoping to learn more about King Seikos. :(

Given the just massive product line Seiko put out - then and now - we couldn't cover everything. But definitely agree! King Seiko and Grand Seiko would be worthy of their own episode

Actually, Kings and Grands were not luxury pieces in the way we think nowadays. Comparing their prices to ordinary Seikos produced in the same period, you won’t see x5 or even x10 times the price.
Every episode I learn so much.
I love Seikos, my first Automatic watch was given to me from my father was a Seiko 5 Perpetual Calendar 1976 with a fantastic blue dial. I have also a 1990 Seiko Worldtimer Chronograph in gold, an Alpinist SARB017, and Cocktail Time SARY078. I also have a small collection of vintage Orient and Citzen watches from the 80s, beautiful watches also. Thanks guys for the video. Maybe next episode you can have a German VS Swiss VS Japanese Watches tournament. Best, Abdul
Thanks for sharing those vintage Seikos! I am currently wearing a 6309-8029 and I also have my father's 6119-6050 Regatta 5 Sports.
Hi guys, thanks for the podcast. If you want to see something cool search for the PDF's of full Seiko catalogs for 74' and 75'. You can find them on some watch forums. I call this the Seiko Disco era. You'll see why.

The 70's vintage are just awesome. The 7016 is the grail. Get it before they disappear when more people find out.
Great show, thoughts on satin finishes, Tutima's loss of value, getting your watch parts back from a service if they do replace the parts? learning so much!
Lumibrite is what the current Seiko lume is called.
That NE88 is on another level from the ETA 7750 though. Column wheel AND vertical clutch.
Good content i have the same worldtime GMT from '67!!! Subscribed!
The Shanghai 3LZF is a Chinese movement designed identically (or very similarly) to the 7750 (The patents have run out long ago). Quality is probably not as consistent, but you might get lucky. Also interesting to note that the Seiko NE88 chronograph is a column wheel, vertical clutch design rather than the 7750's cam-and-lever, horizontal engagement design.
Nice episode guys! you should also mention about 7548 and 7A28 or 7A38
Have you thought about discussing the Seiko SKX mod market / scene? I've modded mine subtly with domed sapphire and Matt black ceramic bezel. But they can get quite jazzy. Edit - premature comment, but please talk about it!
I have seiko 5 automatic 6349-501A watch with muscat oman emplem in it. is it worthy??
First off guys... really great content. I'll be back! But yeah they arw all about the mountains because they are literally all about the mountains. Many of grand seikos designs take major influence from the neighbouring mountains. Including Mount Iwaki.
Congrats on 10k subs
I've seen another review of the square Straton and love the design with the black and orange. So nice looking to me, just wish it wasn't so damn much more than the quartz lol well over 2x price difference for movement change is just too much but still awesome design
Great episode. Cameron seems so much more comfortable in front of the camera than he was at the beginning of the series. Keep it up!
They did do a Pogue reissue btw in the Seiko 5 Sport line. It's the SSA327 blue dial with batman bezel. Then there is a blue dial Pepsi bezel and a black dial black/orange bezel. I don't know the numbers of those 2 but they are all on Jomashop.

toastedtiresify hardly Pogue reissues. Not Chronographs, hokey open heart dial, 44mm, non-recessed crown, no tachymetre bezel. The vaguely resemble the 6139 because of case shape.
I hope when you do the 90's Seiko's that you cover one or all of the Aliens watches. The Ripley, Bishop (this is my favorite), and the Pulsemeter. I hope I can buy one before you do the show though so you don't drive the prices up. lol. I'm laughing but I'm not fucking kidding. This one hit's home hard. This is my brand. I really go for Seiko's. A SARB or an Alpinist are on my list of fall purchases, plus one of the Aliens watches. Cool episode dude. It's turning into a 2 beer show and a second watching. Cheers dude.
Does anyone know anything about a Seiko SQ that has 5H23 8020 with an A4 in a boxon the back with a serial number that starts in 6. The watch has the day in English and Arabic and the numbers at the bottom of the face say 5H23 802L R
Love the channel and podcast. If you guys do an Omega Speedmaster episode, you should see if NASA in Houston would let you in to do some shots of the Apollo missions watches there in a display, or at least some of the history involved with the watch form the first lunar landing mission?
With the references to Predator and Commando, maybe Matt should do an iconic movie watches episode...
For a noob, is a Seiko Sea Prospex Divers SRP585K1 any good?
You might mention this in the show so apologies but wanted to get this question out there. How old would you say a watch should be to qualify as 'vintage' ? For example I have a Seamaster from 1998 - 99 so getting on for 20 years (even though it doesn't seem that long ago). I think of watches from the 80's as vintage but then maybe thats my age. keep up the good work guys. thanks.

I've still got my POGUE my ferst wife bought me in 19.71 .it cost £99. Pounds and it hasn't been tampered with. ITS still a time keeper. And the real POGUE as meter 70 resist at the siad of the 9 Oklok.

I've only seen one other online but it was in rough shape. I got lucky and my Dad stopped wearing it in the mid 70s so other than a scuffed crystal (that buffed out nice.) and a non original bracelet, it's great condition.
Matt if you haven't upgraded the camera yet please PM or reply here to me you don't need to spend much for an amazing macro setup that can get way way in there. It's not so much about the zoom as it is about the minimum focusing distance I love the show and if I can contribute some experience and help that would be awesome. I can send sample shots
love my Pogue and 6309

Man you need to revisit this subject and have Spencer Klein on. Fly him out there or something It would be soo worth it
Vintage Seiko's are far more interesting and fun to wear than vintage Rolex. They were builtjust as well, if not better than most swiss tool watches of the same era!
24:13 Matt: Everyone's seen that video on like, when the guy finds out his GMT is worth like 75 grand. Me: Yep. XD I think anyone who watches watch videos will have come across that video at least once.
at around 56:59 and 57 min the second hand passes 12 and has two strange movements between 12 and 1, seems like no one noticed or is this a non-issue with the watch?

While wearing his Seiko on SKylab Bill Pogue took part in the first (and only) mutiny in space. Skylab 4 crew were overworked for weeks on end, got mad at the flight controllers, and just turned off their radios for a day. Freaked everybody right the f*ck out, but good for them. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skylab_controversy

On the same subject...none of the Omega speedmasters were ever sold, as they were NASA's property. But Dave Scott, Commander of Apollo 15 snuck a Bulova Chronograph up with him. He wore it on the moon's surface after the crystal broke on his Omega (he says). His Bulova sold at auction a few years ago for $1.6 million.

Good to see vintage Seikos getting some limelight. However some of those watches (especially the 6139s) were surprisingly poor examples given one of the guys is a trader. Not truly Pogues either which should have been mentioned.

Will have to disagree with you. This watch has been with me for over a decade now. All original
Matt, you keep asking people to give you a primer on a subject and you pronounce it like that layer of paint that is applied to your car before the color. But you are referring to a primer which is and elementary textbook on a subject. It is actually pronounced "primmer" (like the saying primm and proper). I know, it's weird because it isn't pronounced like it is spelled. And at the risk of being "that guy" I thought you would like to know the correct way to say it. Love Watch and Listen! (also TST).
Really? You left Colombia out of the best coffee list. Yooouuu should be soooo ashamed of yourself 😠😠😊😁😂😂😂😂😂👏👏

I started with vintage and modern Seikos. I learned about appreciating well made mechanical watches from them. With that being said, life is too short to waste wearing a lower tier watch. For me, it has to be a swiss made iconic model. I've graduated past shitters.

Buwsur I see, your focus seems to be on the very high end. Seiko doesn't enter that realm at all. Well, Credor does actually, but it's only their dial designs which imo are superior to the european houses. For everything else you are right.

I love vintage Seikos but unfortunately couldnt watch the whole thing, the host is just a pain in the ass screaming constantly with no reason ans saying a lot of BS...and also its amazing how he doesnt make any eye contact with the guy from DCWatches it gets to be disturbing.
Wearing my 6117-6400 world time right now. I wish I could find another so I could wear it more often and not worry about wearing it out.
