Degrassi College: Why Doesn't Degrassi Follow Characters To University Anymore?

Ойын-сауық

No one wants to see their favorite Degrassi characters leave the show, but why doesn't Degrassi try to follow these characters into college years? Why isn't there a Degrassi college spin-off?
Degrassi did university storylines for three seasons during The Next Generation (Seasons 6, 7 and 8) and learned that while it was a great idea in theory, it wasn't something the audience as a whole was interested in.

I did too! I totally see the point that this video makes, but some of the biggest flaws (in my opinion) that the writers made, when it came to university characters, involved plot holes. I remember Paige having to get tested for HIV. It was an important lesson for viewers, but they left it w/Paige being told that she would have to get tested again every 6 months or so & then NEVER brought it up again. It also seemed like the writers had a sudden disinterest in these characters. If the writers aren't interested, viewers won't be interested either.

Season 8 in general though was a very awkward season. They were transitioning from one era of Degrassi to another and the cast itself was just a mess - we had Emma, Manny and Liberty at University but Liberty had a very decreased role and Emma and Manny's plots weren't that exciting - Kelly was just useless. And then on top of that, they had to introduce all these new characters or work with characters brought in during Season 7 - and some of them were pretty useless too - Bruce, Johnny (outside the Alli storylines), Derek, Danny to an extent, Leia, and then during that season Sav and Anya weren't very interesting to watch plus Mia was just losing touch with reality. Alli, Holly J., Spinner, Jane, Clare, Conner, K.C., and Riley were pretty much the only interesting characters that season and thankfully by Season 9 things were getting more on track. I feel like they finally learned to let go of Emma, Manny and Spinner during that season and that's why they were able to just kick things into gear more in Season 10. That being said, I think Paige got the best storylines out of the college episodes. And in Eli's case at least Clare's power allowed a reason for him to still be included after graduation.

I agree with you about Paige's storyline in college. I thought it was very well done, and a very relatable story, to show how much trouble she was having adjusting to college/university, and the pressure that she was feeling. As a matter of fact, I was disappointed to see that the storyline didn't end up being a long-term storyline that stretched until the end of the season.

Yeah you can tell with season 7, 8, and 9 that there were some transitions happening. After JT died, obviously that was the catalyst to introduce Lakehurst to Degrassi characters, which I think could’ve worked seamlessly but none of those new characters had captivating storylines. I think the writers gave them just enough screen time in s7 to establish their personality then just kicked it up out of nowhere in s8 and s9. It’s weird bc in s7 a lot of focus was still on pre-Lakehurst students and then s8 and s9 it switched to basically all the Lakehurst characters + Degrassi school characters and very little or less impactful Emma, Manny, Liberty, Spinner (outside of him getting shot), and Peter stories.

I must disagree, the reason why the whole university sense did not work, was because it became boring. A lot of things happen during your college years, things that you'd never even suspect. The writers made the characters boring after they graduated. And that's what they failed to notice. Ellie was not the same, Marco was not the same, Paige definitely was not the same. The list goes on.

Stephany Mwaura thank you ☺️ personally I would've love to seen all of these characters go through crazy college situations. Hell of rush week, that woulda been a perfect way for the writers to discuss with the audience that peer pressure doesn't always end when you graduate. They'll be more peer pressure along the way, like hazing for sororities that can often lead to someone being seriously damaged.

Yes, I like bringing characters back for reunions and to teach. I would have no problem if they did an entire story line with an old character as a teacher or counselor or parent. I especially love just having them in the background, like with Katie. I really wanted Marco to be a teacher. As long as the BULK of the show focuses on the high school students then I am fine with them doing that in fact I hope to see other old characters make guest appearances.

Degrassi's done an amazing job of bringing back old characters in Next Class. I wish they'd do something like incorporate Marco as a teacher (Adamo works at Degrassi so he's already there on set), but the issue is Degrassi has massively reduced the involvement of adult characters in the show, most especially the teachers. It was really concerning to see Simpson appear only one time in Season 4.

Degrassi Corner I concur! I loved it when they brought Katie back. And of course the 500th episode. It is clear that this new series is dealing with major budget restraints, but "I know we can make it through!" Their budget is likely why they reduced the role of adults in the series. I think if the series could get on track to longer seasons, it could involve more adults and invite graduated cast members back to play supporting roles more often.

Linda Schuyler did an interview I heard one time explaining another reason that they don't follow characters into college. She said that in high school, there are certain rules and expectations that characters have to meet (ex: going to class), and if they fail to meet those expectations, there are consequences (ex: detention). However, in college, there is more freedom and not as many consequences for failing to meet expectations (ex: if you don't go to class in college, no one cares). She mentioned that for the show to work properly, there has to be this system of expectations and consequences, and if you take it away, the show just doesn't work as well.

Honestly, Paige, Marco and Ellie were kinda interesting at first but like Kary said, it became tiring especially by the time Emma, Manny and Liberty went to college. I would honestly just skip past their parts. I did however like how they used to follow characters after graduation like Spinner who was working at the The Dot and with Jane. Also, I liked how they showed Eli as well because they didn't show his college life and he wasn't in every episode(just when he visited Claire or vice versa). So I would mind seeing characters after graduation but only if they have a purpose on the show other than being a college student.

After characters graduate from Degrassi, it feels like they all kind of served their purpose. There isn't really a need for them anymore. The main character of Degrassi, is in fact, Degrassi. That's exactly why the later years of Glee did not work. The main character of Glee, was in fact, Glee. I'd much rather just see new and interesting characters then follow the OG characters around because it's way too much going on with two settings in one series. It didn't work on an hour program like Glee...it definitely didn't work in a half an hour program on Degrassi!

I agreed Degrassi itself is kind of like its own Institution it's been around since the 80s I know I wasn't born in the 80s I did watch Junior High and high and I feel like that's what the degrassi supposed to emulate life and that is what happens when you go to school people graduate people move on and people go their own separate ways and I think it's weird that they create a story line where everyone ends up in the same College that rarely happens in real life

I always thought if Glee was going to do the two settings then it should've did one episode for the school, the next for new York and keep doing that back and forth. It gives the characters more time, and if people prefer one setting over the other they can have that setting be in a full episode. Even if some songs might be repeated sometimes. Like the double location songs.

I liked the college stuff, in all seasons. Even the webseries with Eli (which is actually a good way of doing that). But college (or after graduation) is one thing that tends to drive people away from teen shows everytime. And what would make it weird in Degrassi is that they already have the generation thing kinda like Skins (even though Degrassi did it first, I think) that after they graduate they leave. This is already something that some people hate cause they can't connect with the new ones. And then you have also the college plots that shows like Gossip Girl did, that many hate because it was a show about mainly the Queen Bees and then you need to see them trying that in university and it feels very childish. In Degrassi, you could translate that to the thing about no consequences someone said in the comments above. Only show I remember that did the same format as Degrassi, mixing both is Glee and it only lasted I think 1 season doing exactly that, I didn't finish the show but I know few of the new ones were kept in the last two seasons after this one. They blackholed everyone else because people seemed not to like them and then the focus went mostly to the ones who graduated in season 3 and 4 (only the ones who were already in the show before). I know people who enjoyed the new cast better than the New York plot so it was probably very upsetting. In Degrassi it's even more difficult because it has a tradition of changing the generations (unlike Glee that it you're not a Supergirl fan it's very unlikely for you to start from season 4) and people are always starting to watch the show in different generations, so if they had in Next Class a college plot for Clare's class people who only started watching these seasons on Netflix would be like "Why are they showing me these people in university?". And some people never really care to go back to older seasons so specially now with Next Class wouldn't work so well. Maya's class they watched since season 1 though so they could like if there were college plots for them. Specially because now that it's on Netflix they will most likely watch the whole Next Class and not start in random seasons like it used to be when it was on TV.

  • @CeejaeMarie

    @CeejaeMarie

Glee definitely messed up in the later seasons (although I did enjoy season 4) it got very sloppy afterwards because they still constantly were bringing back old characters while trying to introduce new ones. Season 6 was extremely sloppy because none of the new characters storylines had much depth since the show was also trying to wrap up storylines from the original cast. Similarly, Degrassi messed up when they latched onto the college storylines for far too long. It's clearly difficult to keep up with old characters while trying to bring in new ones because it tends to be sloppy. However, what Degrassi accomplished that Glee struggled to do was bring back graduated students. In Glee, the New York group constantly was going back and forth from Lima to NYC which logically made zero sense. Degrassi was eventually able to keep up relationships between graduates and students (Eli and Clare's Skype conversations). They also brought back relatives in a more logical way (bringing Katie back to help Maya). Overall, in the later seasons of Degrassi, a character's return served some purpose (Craig helping with the talent show) instead of just bringing someone back to give the fans more of a certain character.

I loved it back in the day. It was nice following them and seeing what they were up to outside of Degrassi. It's just always so bittersweet when we say goodbye to certain characters and you just want more of them so it does become hard to let go. You want to see how things will shape out for them outside of Degrassi. Whenever your favorites graduate the thought always comes "oh I wish we can see them in college" but I know its probably unlikely for it to happen. Honestly if they came back to visit for a special occasion then I'm certainly fine with that. That's always a nice surprise which makes that whole episode feel so special and it never really takes away from the students who are now the center focus of Degrassi. They've manage to bring characters back for short cameos and little character arcs and I'm cool with that. They'll forever be in the Degrassi family just have to be strong and develop new connections to those who are still there and are incoming and then if those who graduated in a certain class decide to pop in then I can be happy with that even if we don't follow them as they go through college.

To me Degrassi even without the college stories still don't know when to let go. One of the reasons I stopped watching it for three years before deciding to come back was because of the two retcons that messes up the timeline to an endless confusion not to mention seasons 13-14 to keep the seniors on even longer making the timeline even more confusing since the class of 2014 were on since season 8. I understand that they do not follow "real time" anymore but they really should have so even without the college stories Degrassi doesn't know when to let go. Now I will agree that Degrassi should remain centered on high school but I will say that if you know what stories to tell or even ask real life college students about their experiences you can come up with a Degrassi like college show (not necessarily a spin off but it's own show) and it could be a success but no one wants to do that. I personally think we need a legitimate college show dealing with the trials and tribulations of experiencing the world for yourself for the first time! A Different World did that in the 1990's and it was a success!

I knew all of these reasons, but I could never have put it all together so eloquently. Degrassi was really lucky that it had the opportunity to experiment. Too many shows die off too quickly and are denied the chance of seeing what works best for them. It would be really sweet if we had updates on all of the alums, but not at the cost of going completely off brand by leaving the school.

Understanding that the focus of the show is Degrassi and the students who go there, I do think there’s room for good post high school storylines. Part of the reason I got tired of the college plots is bc they weren’t as stimulating. I also think there were so many great stories used in the “Degrassi school” years that once they graduate, it’s not much left. If you look at every character that was followed to college, most of them had at least one (or more) vice or adversity to overcome in each season and it could’ve been saved for their college years. I would’ve preferred to see Emma bulimic while dating Kelly, not Peter , Marco systemic gay issues as an adult, Manny contemplate a boob job in college, Paige dating a professor to help overcome her pressure and stress.

it could also have something to do with the actors not wanting to continue the show. many actors and actresses were on the show for 3+ years and they'd all eventually want to move on and pursue other careers or acting projects. also, the plots did get boring which was disappointing as the writers could've explored the characters in college so much better.

Like Marco has two episodes where it's the exact same plot of him being lonely with little progression. And then they end it with a weird makeout.

I just wish they wouldn’t leave us kind of on edge. Like with Claire and Eli I NEEDED to see more of that I just think when they kind of leave a cliff hanger it’s annoying. but other than that I understand why they don’t do university because I don’t really care to see people after university either since most of the popular characters annoy me so much lol. What they should do is go back to making movies but do it after their graduation so we can see what happens after Highschool for them because idk like to see some people who don’t make it in life or who don’t go to college and still become successful. If they showed every character going to university after high school yeah it would encourage people to go to university but also discourage people and plus I know I’d get bored of it cause the people who are seniors had their chance to shine you know? I think a reunion is great every so often because it makes it more nostalgic.

I watched seasons 1-7 not because of the school but because that first crop of actors they had with Jimmy and Emma’s classes was gold man that’s iconic tv up there with saved by the bell and boy meets world as I got older by season 8 when the original cast left I just could never watch the show anymore I think that original TNG class bought the show to the heights of it’s popularity that’s the thing I think after season 5 and season 7 classes graduated besides a couple storylines like Emma and Spinner getting married or Degrassi Goes Hollywood I remember that I just couldn’t get into the new cast that’s just me me personally I’m biased cause I grew up on the show watching it on teennick it’s my guility pleasure idc how famous I get I love that show I watched it every week with my mom on the n reminds me of my childhood before I had bills, stress, and an entire rap game to compete with

In a way, this does make sense. I mean it did work well with Paige and a few,but not so much with manny, liberty, and Emma. It was interesting to see though. But one part where liberty, manny and Emma went did have a consequence where someone brought drugs into the college.

Degrassi characters in college could have worked if we had all the characters from the old generation such as Manny,Jay,Emma,Liberty,Marco,Paige,Ellie, go to the same college or simultaneously two different colleges but have their storylines go through at the same time, but sadly we couldn't get that because we had to keep going back to the new characters in Degrassi

I absolutely loved Marco, Ellie, and Paige in university! But i agree that having the school is important. I think it only worked because the other half of OG’s were in high school and it was the perfect balance. When the original “grade 8’s” left and you just had “grade 7’s” in university.. it became super boring... also I feel like Marco, Ellie, and Paige had more exciting storylines in college. All i remember from the Emma, manny, and liberty was the pot brownies.

Sorry but I disagree. I actually enjoyed the college storylines my favorite being Paiges where she started having panic attacks and it showed just how difficult college could be. They just need to get better storylines and have better writers. Now that Degrassi is with Netflix they have a lot more freedom to play around so it would definitely work. Also I disagree about them doing the characters justice when they bring them back for a reunion. If you are gonna bring them back then give them a storyline not a 30 second cameo. There are a lot of stories to be told and a whole lot happens during college and beyond which im sure people would be interested in watching if the stories were done right. I still want to know what Emma, Ashley, Manny, Paige, Jimmy, Hazel, etc are up to. I could care less about Marco tho, hes in everything degrassi it seems when i just dont think his character was all that exciting when compared to others.

I got bored with all storylines that had nothing to do with Degrassi. However if they were still part of the Degrassi drama it was okay. Like when Spinner graduated he was still associated with Degrassi students which made his character’s presence work.

Wasn't there a spinoff series called Liberty Street, centred around an artsy neighbourhood where several characters settled? I dont know, i think they could do it, especially if the characters have a connection to the school. Like paige and alex or spinner and jane. or even 1 degree of separation could work i think. You just have to give your characters interesting storylines post hs. I think thats the real problem the writers have. Paiges panic attacks or marcos gambling addiction are way more interesting than ellie having relationship problems with a whole new character.

I think the problem is that they had the college storylines at the same time as the high school storylines. People were focusing on the high school storylines more than the college cause they were going on at the same time. They needed a test show to focus solely on college instead of focusing on high school and college at the same time. Also it's important to market it towards college age people.

Degrassi maybe around today but none of the new characters are as captivating as the Next Generation. It was great seeing them going to college and following them into their adult lives. This video is absolutely wrong. I hope Degrassi comes back out with the original characters from the early 2000s.

I truly get what you’re saying and make good points. But my opinion is that degrassi did such a good job making characters, conversations and sceniarios SOOOO REALISTIC. But the college years (best example is Emma’s weed brownies) the writing seemed SO FAKE AND SLOPPY. Like that whole episode seemed fake asf. Like a boomer trying to explain experimenting. For me it was just the writing. It was so tacky and cheesy.

I actually really loved following some of the characters to University. Having Ellie and Paige live together was fun to watch! Two very different girls who initially don't like each other but they put their differences aside for their friend Marco. The later story with Emma, Manny, and Liberty, was ok but not as interesting as the last pairing. Overall I do understand that the focus does need to be on the high school to keep the series in one focus.
