I like it for YT up to about 15 lbs. Over that, it’s a little under gunned. Make sure to get the reel serviced if you fish it hard.

These are made for saltwater fishing. They’re pretty popular for Southern California ocean fishing. The three reels that I see the most are the Shimano tranx, the daiwa Lexa, and more recently, the penn fathom level wind. They’re actually pretty good for the application. This reel had seen a lot of use and was in its last legs. It’s not the reels fault.

Switch to a Shimano. they are out of Irvine, you could send you a real there and they will service it, a Shimano won’t have this problem lol

Expensive. I guess worth it though. I do have a tranx 500 on another stick. For some reason, I don’t like the way they feel in my hand. I already got a Penn fathom 400 level wind to replace this reel.

For me, it’s easier to take it in. And, it’s just as easy to drop it off as it is to pick up all the parts. I don’t have all the washers and gears I need sitting around my garage.

The rubber band lets you adjust your leader length and minimizes the number of knots you have in your line.

The thought for me is that you don’t want to add any more knots in your line than you need to. It seems that every time a fish is lost, it’s at the knot (unless the fish chews through the line, prob more likely).

Fished out of Eureka last labor day weekend and caught dozens of huge Yellow Eyes (all released with descending devise) I do not understand why we can't keep a few. If I had to guess 25 percent of all the fish we caught were Yellow Eyes.

Wow. So up here near Monterey we can’t fish at all between 20-50 fathoms. That takes out much of the prime rock ledges we have fished for decades. I guess it’s time to let it recover.

Yeah, that’s a big chunk of area that is shut down. There’s hope though. In southern California there was the cowcod conservation area that shut down a lot of area to fish. It was just opened up…. So, it’s not forever.

Saltwater fishing is out of control. I do not buy the saltwater extension anymore. I fish all fresh water Bass now. Catch and release 100% I'm 74 I've been fishing our waters since I was 12 years old from San Diego to Morro Bay. Tight Lines

There’s a lot to fish for in the ocean. There’s calico, sand bass, bay bass, and halibut inshore. Plus all the palegics. I have a blast offshore. And, for rockfish, if you go on a sport boat or a 4 pack, they know the rules and all you have to do is show up. I wouldn’t give up so fast…

That is NOT all that is new. Now you can only fish all depths for the first three months. Second three months is shoreward of the 50 fathom and last three months is seaward of the 50 fathom in the Southern Management area. But thanks for posting what you did many people have no clue.
