2023 SoCal Rockfish Regulations - Big changes this year!!
Couple notes:
Summaries of recreational ground fish regulations for all the rockfish regions can be found here:
wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Ocean...
CDFW has an interactive map that shows no fish zones (MPAs, cowcod conservation area, etc…) here:
cdfw.maps.arcgis.com/apps/web...
Here’s the actual code (including gps numbers for the 50 fathom curve):

Just got a link to the 50 fathom curves from a friend in the know. www.pcouncil.org/documents/2021/11/e-5-a-supplemental-cdfw-report-1.pdf/ Note that there are curves around the islands and also some of the high spots offshore like Cortez and Osborn.
Thanks dude. This is the first recourse I've found that clarified the new regs succinctly

Appreciate the good words. They help with the motivation to make new videos.
I really appreciate that. Your video will help for all fishermen out there. Thank you again 👍

Good info. Thanks. Also, not many people know Chuckies are actually Copper Rockfish. Good stuff.

Thanks man. I worked on sport boats for a good part of my life. You pick up a thing or two when you look at them over and over…
Kinda helpful...thank you.
I remembered the good old days no limited on size and catch., also lucky to catch my 20 pound cowcod in 70S.

Thanks for the video, it really helps. But I wanted to clarify something on the map where you showed all green. I did download the GPS points and I fish around Anacapa and Cruz and there are 50 fathom GPS points around both islands and along with the shore. So I am assuming that I can't fish within that line and the island, which covers pretty much all the good spots for rockfish near the channel islands. There are also GPS points for Catalina and Clemente. Is that your understanding too? Thanks again!

@@artemisadventures1734 Awesome, thanks so much!
Very informative, is this for boats and kayaks only or for shore fishing as well?

Hi, thank you for the info. Is it hard to tell the reds and the brown spotted rock fish apart?

I don't think so. If you hold them side by side, they look totally different. The reds are red and the brown spotted rockfish are brown. :)

Do any of you know if we can now fish the north 9 mile bank for rockfish? And I assume the 43 is still going to be closed? I am running a Simrad NSX on my boat and wouldn't it be nice at some point the updates would show that 50 fathom curve line. I may have to call Simrad on that to see unless some of you know. Tight lines! Danny and Kim.

I say yes to the 9. :). But only 4/1 thru the end of the year. No depth limits. :) I think the 43 is in the eastern cowcod conservation area so no fishing there yet. Check out this map. CDFW has all the no fishing zones (but no 50 fa curve yet) cdfw.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=c00c82e1f32a49e99c747e2411e3439e

@@artemisadventures1734 Thanks for the information. It would be great if the north 9 is open for us and it could be. I enjoyed your video. You guys have a great season coming up. See ya out there. Tight Lines!
Hi! I’m new I rock fishing. How can I obtain a copy of a legal rock fish to keep in California. Store where I normally get my fishing license is isn’t giving one anymore. Thanks!

wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Ocean/Regulations/Groundfish-Summary#south Here’s their website. For the most part you can keep all the rockfish except the ones I said you can’t take (cowcod, yellow eye, and bronze spotted)
Just a reminder that as of Aug. 7th, 2023 NO QUILLBACK ROCKFISH may be possessed in addition to no Bronzespotted, Cowcod, and Yelloweye
Can you post a link to the 50 fathom curve map and gps numbers? Thanks

@ArtemisAdventures Ok thank you. I have looked for the fathom map myself with no success. I am up in the channel islands and we have canyons that cross over the lines so the depth meter trick doesn't work.

@@socalfisherman6989 I looked too and couldn't find the map. It's a PITA to look at the GPS numbers and try to figure out the line. Time consuming... I found a note on the CDFW website that said they were going to add the 50 fa curve to their interactive charts (where they show the 3 mile line and all the other closures) but it's not on there yet.
Where can I buy the trick fish card??

The one I’m showing in the video is from the CFW website. I think they’re easy to find a lot of places though.
So what are chilies? That’s one I remember as good eating.

Hey Jeff, chilis are chillipeppers. They’re listed under “other rockfish”. I remember them as easy to fillet and good bag fillers. I think they taste good too!
So stupid to fish in California, going thru all regulations takes the fun of it🤦🏽♂️

You’re telling me brother! Besides the timing, the protected area closures are a big deal. You’re expected to know where you can and can’t fish (MPAs) based on some gps coordinates. I am looking forward to April though! I have some new deep water spots that I want to try.
So we can go fish 1000 feet deep like the good old days?
@artemisadventures1734

I think the answer is yes. As long as you’re not in a protected zone.
