We Lost a BIG Bluefin Tuna
This is a story of heartbreak. After a long day of fishing with no bites, we hooked this hog of a bluefin tuna while fishing off the San Diego coast.
We were on a Parker 2820.
The setup we were using was a Shimano Talica 12II 2-speed reel that had 100 lb braid with 100 yards of 50 lb mono tied to 5’ of 50 lb flouro and a 2/0 Mustad circle hook. The rod was a Calstar 6470.

Thanks for sharing #bluefinfishing #loveitandhateit
I loss a yellowfin tuna over 200lb and 2 hours of fighting right out of gaff range. I also pulled on a my record 262lb yellowfin for over 3 hours that fish worked me. I have never been worked like that.
You let that fish get under you. Keep moving the boat so the fish can death circle. That’s the only way to land those on light line.
The ones you remember most, it’s why we keep coming back!

The look on our faces when the line broke! We had a long pause of silence before we said anything…

You heard it here from me first but I won’t be the last because those fish are addicting to try to catch and figure ways to find them and get them sooner will be the goal for this lifetime. Cheers and I wish you well with your humble channel here.
Bluefin will brake your heart. Been there done that.
Too small of a reel for that fight in my opinion. Tough to keep a fish on for 4 hours

You’re right. We were definitely under gunned on this one. I had to change the bearings in the reel after this fight!
Ooof! Frustrating. Looked like that fish got under and unfortunately the anglers were focused on gaining line. We all learn as these fish will expose us.
Damn!!
Bluefin are the epitome of love hate in big game fishing.

It’s why I wanted to show some of the hate. It’s all love on the internet.

@@artemisadventures1734 true. It helps with reality vs expectations for new anglers which can make for more fun trips even with the heartbreak.
