I’m not really a gear guy (though, I have pretty nice gear). I say get what the guys at the tackle shop tell you what to get. I will say that I like two speeds and braid with a shortish (50-100’) top shot. I also lean towards 7 or 8’ sticks. Not too long.

For most of my sticks in the 30-60 lb range I’ve been using 65lb braid backer. Then I use about 50-100’ of mono top shot. I like to cast with mono, but don’t mind having braid under. This makes it easy to change out the top shot every couple trips or so. I don’t have a preference for line but think I have Berkeley braid and izorline mono.

This was out of Point Loma Sportfishing in San Diego, California. It was last August. If you’re going to travel to do one if these trips, I’d be here August or September.
