2024 California Rockfish Regulations
This video tries to make sense of the 2025 California Rockfish Regulations. They're not easy to figure out this year, so I hope this helps!
In this video I go over:
- What rockfish are prohibited for take
- What kind of fish you can take - when and where
- 20 and 50 fathom boundary lines
- Rockfish bag limits; total and per fish
- Rockfish minimum lengths
- Rockfish filletting on boat requirements
Here's a link to my discussion with Louie Zimm. Thanks for your support on this Louie!

Thanks!
I have closely followed the groundfish regulations and attended several recent FGC meetings. You did an outstanding job summarizing all the changes.

Thanks for saying something. This took way more time to put together than I thought it would.
Thanks for the info!
Catch what you’ll eat and release the rest. The piles of fish people take home and toss in the trash is the reason we get nailed with regulations like this.

I agree.
Seriously needed information. Thank you for taking the time to explain this all. Some funky rules though...

I made this video and I do t know how I’m going to keep everything straight in my head. Especially what fish I can catch where.
Thank you for the information. You did good job explaining. I’ll go to Bodega and catch me some rock fish.

Thanks for the comment. This took a good amount of time to make. I’m glad it’s helping you.
Wow. So up here near Monterey we can’t fish at all between 20-50 fathoms. That takes out much of the prime rock ledges we have fished for decades. I guess it’s time to let it recover.

Yeah, that’s a big chunk of area that is shut down. There’s hope though. In southern California there was the cowcod conservation area that shut down a lot of area to fish. It was just opened up…. So, it’s not forever.
Fished out of Eureka last labor day weekend and caught dozens of huge Yellow Eyes (all released with descending devise) I do not understand why we can't keep a few. If I had to guess 25 percent of all the fish we caught were Yellow Eyes.

Glad to hear they’re doing so well in your area. Hopefully they get opened back up again while we can still fish them.
4:57 the "20 fathom map" is showing north of San Francisco, when "A little north of San Simeon" is much further south !

Thanks. That 20 fathom line note is pointing to the green line that stretches down the coast to below the bay. I see how the leader is pointing way up north though.
Just in time for pelagic season so not too many people will be thinking about rock fish! 😄🎣

I know. They took forever to get these regs approved! The YT are biting at the islands. Let’s go!
That is NOT all that is new. Now you can only fish all depths for the first three months. Second three months is shoreward of the 50 fathom and last three months is seaward of the 50 fathom in the Southern Management area. But thanks for posting what you did many people have no clue.

Did you watch the whole video? Did you see the tables that I made?
Saltwater fishing is out of control. I do not buy the saltwater extension anymore. I fish all fresh water Bass now. Catch and release 100% I'm 74 I've been fishing our waters since I was 12 years old from San Diego to Morro Bay. Tight Lines

There’s a lot to fish for in the ocean. There’s calico, sand bass, bay bass, and halibut inshore. Plus all the palegics. I have a blast offshore. And, for rockfish, if you go on a sport boat or a 4 pack, they know the rules and all you have to do is show up. I wouldn’t give up so fast…
😡 Did " California " created or Stocked fish in Ocean ? Only God ( a creator ) can do that.
