NWRedworms

It'sl not just about growing redworms anymore. They do create the best time released fertilizer, but the black soldier fly larvae is the fastest eating compost organism of almost all food waste.

The fact that you have chickens that scratch through the manure resulting in it drying out is the key. My manure is always soaked in urine and after I spray the cages down which I do daily (weather permitting), the manure gets even wetter. Whenever I shovel it out it's like a big clump of mud. I use it in my garden and it is full of red worms but it's not round dry pellets as you have. I'm not allowed to have chickens in my town. Any suggestions on how to get dry manure without urine? I have in the past tried putting buckets with holes beneath the cages so the urine would drain through leaving behind dried pellets but I still find it they are saturated in urine which attracts a ton of flies and makes the entire area rather unpleasant.

Geez, Thank you for the video! I'm a bit new to raising rabbits, I bought a doe who was pregnant, she had her babies two days ago, I went out to check on them and three outside the nest, they were all stiff and cold, I was sure they were gone so I tossed them outside something came along and ate them maybe a Turkey Vulture. I will need to do your method of reviving first if that happens again. It is late April and temps go down still to 40's and maybe 30's.

I’m going to be ordering one when I’m back from vacation. I’ve seen others use cardboard to help the flies lay their eggs. How does it work with this setup?

@@NWRedworms thanks for the reply. I’m going to order one in about a week (traveling right now) and wanted to order some larvae to kick start it. What should I order to start the bin off while the bin attracts local bsf?

I recently learned that wheat bran is very high in oxalates, which are micro-abrasive crystals that some plants produce to kill the insects that eat them by cutting up their digestive tracts. It is the ingredient in Barkeepers Friend cleanser. It takes time to kill them, but I wonder if the worms/ beetles would be healthier and live longer if other media was used? I am using a mix of wheat bran with some oatmeal that I grind finer than the rolled oats. Carrots, spinach and potatoes are also high in oxalates. (I have been studying foods high in oxalates as it was the cause of my fibromyalgia and bladder pain, and mineral deficiencies.)

Don't know how much they can handle? I had some frozen in my freezer at 0F for 4 days and after taking them outside in 80 degree temps they all thawed and took off again. Think I read somewhere the pupae are more tolerant of cold for longer periods. Makes sense, they do burrow shallow and live through winter to emerge in spring. When the temps hit about 70 around here. Don't think they are quite as fragile as some like to say.
