Oyster Mushroom growing test 1

I love the idea of growing my own edible mushrooms and then creating great compost. I started getting this oyster mushroom medium from a friend to use in my compost. I hoped to accelerate my carbon composts with this fungus. I did not expect to get a few mushrooms in the process.

Soak, drain well and then use a cattle prod to give them a good jolt. It stimulates them like a lightning bolt. This is optional but loads of fun.

I tell you without sterilizing you are growing such a great mushroom. That is remarkable. Great video. Keep it up. I haven't grown any but about to start. I have mycelium already spawned in a box for 3 weeks.

I haven't seen them grown this way before, which is awesome btw, but you should be able to encourage another flush or more by submerging the whole bucket in water for a time, then pouring off the excess. Similar to the BRF cake method :)

this is great, I can't wait to try it! Just need some mycelium, and to start saving coffee grounds!

Feed that spent substrate to your red worms! You can get second and third flushes depending on your substrate. Soaking water is common to rehydrate the mycelium blocks after fruiting flushes; however, after a 24 hour soak, you need adequate drainage, because you don't really want any standing water in the bottom of your rehydrated substrate. After a good 24 hr soak, you may need to leave them upside down for 24 hrs, so any excess water can drain out your holes in the lid. If you want longer colonization and stronger flushes add some fine hardwood chips to your tea leaves. Also it will help if you don't dump the mycelium blocks on the ground. Use a mixing table that you wipe off with rubbibg alcohol, as sterilization will help keep the mycelium strong. Take your new substrate like tea leaves and hardwood chips, them soak them in a tub of water with clean dry wood ash, or horticultural lime at the right ratio, to cold pasturize the new substrate. You can add old coffee grounds, shredded cardboard or any clean carbon based organic matter, to dilute the nitrogen component of your tea leaves, as the green nitrogen components have the potential to get to hot if mixed in to strong of a ratio.

Where to get the spores? Can I use the rabbit hay they waste out the bottom of the hutch?

Spores101 has pearl oyster, enoki, shitake, and a bunch of other gourmet spores. If you use any loose hay just make sure to sterilize it in hot water before putting it in the container to eliminate competitive spores. (He doesn't have to worry about contamination as much because the mycelium is well established)

Thank you Casey.. We love Mushrooms but hate paying the prices.. I never though Shrooms would grow well here because of the heat and just found out that there is a Commercial Shiitake grower just on the other side of the lake from us. We have hay galore that falls through the hutches as they munch.

Hi Doug, I've been taking a look at your website, do you still sell any BSF larvae? It says out of stock. Thanks!

I have just seen the first larvae emerge. I am hoping in the next couple weeks I will be able to reopen selling to the public.

The larvae are ready to go. I have about 5000 that are 1/2" or larger and they are ready to ship.

You can reuse the buckets to grow more mushrooms. The Open Source Ecology wiki has some info on this in the aquaponics greenhouse section. It is a good idea to steam the compost prior to mixing with the medium in order to sterilize and kill any mold spores that may be present if plan on eating the fruited mushrooms. A mold contamination can mess your world up. Peace!
