The wild pile of black soldier fly larva

This is for my birds. I raise larva in many bins with spent barley, but these guys get all the excess food from the rest of the farm including the stuff that I don't want to feed to the worms.

Fascinating how they move in. In such a short time, a small pile they can multiply.

Have you thought about doing an episode on dirty jobs? Lol. Interesting work. I like the worm program best.

How you ever considered a black soldier fly compost pile that is contained in a large cylindrical metal cage where you alternate between layers of bread or rotting fruit and spent barley. You place the pile at a location for easy chicken access and when the pile is at a point where it does not breakdown anymore, you take apart the cage, spread out the content for the chickens to scratch for a couple days, then put it through conventional composting.

I have to ask; does the pile smell? I'm thinking with the fruit it has to, right? Anyway I love to learn about natural ways to feed animals. I don't have any yet but I hope to very soon. Janice

+water9559 There are better places on the farm for rats (like around the pigs).

The black soldier fly larvae eat anything humans or animals do. They eat animal dung, they eat food scraps, etc.
