Gross or Brilliant? Using Bugs to Feed the Animals We Eat | National Geographic

Ойын-сауық

At the Guangdong Entomological Institute in Guangzhou, China, researchers are reinventing both waste disposal and the food system. By feeding food scraps to the larvae of soldier flies, they are diverting waste that would otherwise end up in landfills. The fly larvae are then processed into a powder, creating a protein source that can be combined with other nutrients and pelletized into animal feed. The work is currently being done on a small scale, but those involved hope to see many facilities adopting this practice in the near future.

Why would this be gross? Chickens are naturally omnivores and will eat bugs and worms even lizards and small mice. It's very healthy for them to get some protein and they actually prefer meat if given a choice between grain and bugs. Also, I find chickens fed with heavily processed feed a lot more gross than the ones eating straight from nature, whether it's whole grain or bugs/maggots.

my chickens love worms! this video is trying to show that the meat we eat should be eating worms vs dry feed. this helps because the worms will eat the waste that would normally go into a land fill and then the worms get eaten by chickens :) so many ppl being like "dont chickens eat worms". NOT THE CHICKENS YOU EAT... the chicken meat we buy in the store are chickens that are cooped up in a 1 foot by 1 foot box.. terrible. eating dry corn feed forever. chickens NEED VARIETY and they NEED to keep busy.

Someone needs to invent some sort of containment chamber-habitat (that could be sold in feed-stores, etc.) where cockroaches or other bugs within the chamber could be fed kitchen/food scraps, allowed to hyper-populate, then harvested at intervals for feeding the bugs to the chickens!! As it is, my chickens just get a bug now and then. But they love eating bugs.. Insert food scraps and water into bug chamber, then harvest nearly free feed for happy chickens!! If feed stores would sell such an apparatus, I'd buy one!

It is brilliant. Anything but gross it is a natural food for many animals and a protein that their bodies are well-adjusted to digest. Even herbivores Will digest a certain amount of bugs. I rays bugs for my chickens, and I actually buy some frozen. It is superior to other forms of protein. In the case of chickens they cannot digest and utilize plant protein, they must get it from animal or bugs. Vegetarian chickens and nutritionally deficient unless they’re given supplements they are also prone to more diseases. Your eggs are nothing but a Cholesteryl bombs because they have no other nutrition in them.

Why can't we eat the bugs and feed ourselves to the animals?

  • @Brainchild69

As far as poultry or fish feed, yeah sure, but not for livestock feed. When animals are fed things they don't naturally eat is one way we run into problems.

Well some animals do eat insects like hogs. Of course you should not feed insects to cows or goats.

I've been doing this for years. Free chicken feed. I have yet to buy feed for them. Having a good compost pile is the easiest way I've found.
