The double ramp is definately the way to go. I have tons of mature larvae just sitting at the far end waiting for it to warm up enough to travel to the other side. I would not go longer, instead I would build it wider from front to back.

It's my understanding that although the adult flies don't eat, they do need a source of hydration. Do you have any water source in your pupation bin?

Yes, we finally got larvae!!!:). I have another video coming of the larvae. It took a while since there was not enough moisture. It is already cooling here so my season is ending.

We are building a bin like this tomorrow. Now that you've had this a while, do you feel the trade off of lost bin space for the second harvest ramp is worth it. In other words, do the grubs in your first bin seem to have trouble finding the ramp from the far end of the bin? We were planning a six foot bin, but if we do dual ramps, we will probably go with eight foot with additional support under the middle. Any advice is appreciated.

Have you seen any larvae yet? I'm in Dallas and have an active colony. Our temperatures will drop soon and the colony will go dormant until spring. Trying to figure out if I can put them in a greenhouse and keep them pupating, mating, laying and hatching all winter. We have many days in the 70's in Jan/Feb but two days later it may be 25, so you don't see adults in the wild during winter. My chickens will go into withdrawal if I can't figure out how to keep a steady supply coming. UGLY LOL!

put them in a bucket of sawdust and wait for them to become flies. if the food is fresh in the bin they will come back and lay eggs

The top of it has a sheet of plastic, but I would not leave it out in the rain. This was in an open ended greenhouse.
