fish with them all the time here in Louisiana. Call them maggots. Am 88 and never realized they were soldier fly larvae. Gonna build one of your bins. Very good video. Can't understand most of the videos I watch but yours is very understandable. I really enjoyed it.Thanks much!
I like this design a lot, because a lot of people have complained that, instead of a floor ramp, they use pipes and the larva don't crawl up it. This pretty much guarantees only one way up and out. I'll be using this design.

Awesome, thanks
This is my main fish bait. I came about them by accident. I make catfish chum in the summers here in Alabama, I had left a bucket of chum open and after a few weeks lots of grub were in it. After looking it up they were Black Soldier Flies. I knew aquaponics farmers used them to feed fish, so I figured why not try them for bait. they work better than anything. In fact I developed a bait harness to use them effectively called the Black Warrior Tip Rig. It was a blessing in disguise.

Love it. We were just talking about making a Mealworm bin. Today my wife found BSF larvae in our feed. I started out researching to ID the worm and found your video. It just so happens we are Christians and have also done missions in Honduras. Part of my love for chickens began in Honduras. I saw a widow, in the hills, feeding 4 children a day with only 4 chickens and one duck. The eggs of the tied down birds provided food and trading options for medicine. I really enjoyed the video and will follow you. God bless Ryan

The only thing I would do in addition is to paint the side walls with a water proofing of some sort. The concern about the bottom rotting out would also apply to the side walls once you start piling up the scraps in there.
That's a good nice size bin you have Sir. Thanks for posting this video.

Can you update the latest video about this garbage disposal system and introduce the experience of using it in the past few years? I've watched a lot of videos, and your build is great. I also plan to make one based on your plan. I have searched all your videos since then, but I don't see any new video about the Black soldier fly waste disposal system. So I'm looking forward to your new video on how it works.

Pay attention to ants, some species would take the baby maggots. One video I saw, the guy placed all four feet into buckets of water to prevents ants to climb up into the bin. Nice job!

As long as you have a good size colony, they will process the waste fast enough to prevent it from smelling.

Will it work if you put a waterproof light in the fish tank ? The light will cause insects to fly into the water at night so that the fish can eat it.

Very minimal issues. We suggest placing wire screen over the holes. The screen holes are large enough for the BSF, but it keeps many other insects out.
Thanks for video, how you clean inside of it? when we collect lavras ,there will be residues of larvas like lavra manure, so will we change it with fresh food or will we add food to manure of lavras?

As you continue putting food scraps in there, you will be creating compost. Periodically, you can remove it. Just make sure that you leave some larvae in there, along with some compost.

@thehealthawakening
7 жыл бұрын
Marlon Ortiz You really have to be very careful. First and foremost, I recommend using a store bought fish food. I feel it's important due to the fact that they have produced a great product to help the growth of the fish. Then I supplement with the other. The black soldier flies has been an issue for us. Starting and maintaining a colony as some make it hasn't been that easy or at least here in Copan. I have mixed half and half of moringa and duckweed. Be very careful in only putting in as much as they will eat in about 10 to 20 minutes. You don't want it floating to the bottom and decaying.
@TheMarlonbrando1
7 жыл бұрын
so your recomendation would be, BSF, duckweed, moringa and commercial pellets in the same ratio? thank you and may God continue blessing you and your family.
@thehealthawakening
7 жыл бұрын
If you can make the BSF happen, then yes, I would work with it. You will have to play with it and see what works with your fish. Main thing is to NOT overfeed. If they are not eating it, it does them no good having wasted food floating and sinking to the bottom of the tank.
@TheMarlonbrando1
7 жыл бұрын
thank you, hope you can get the BSF going, i was watching some detailed info on this in Living Web Farms, maybe that can help your culture.
Hi. Couple of questions. Once you put the kitchen waste in, do you close the lid and let the flies find the food or do you keep the open for the flies and close it after a couple of days. Second, I m assuming this is s constant cycle. Keep on putting kitchen scraps and new generation will keep on popping up. Would appreciate the guidance on this. Thanks
@thehealthawakening
5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you close the lid. There are holes on the side for the black soldier flies to come in. Yes, it's a constant cycle. You keep piling on scraps. The larva will continuously process it.
What do you do with the "goo" that is left in the bin? Can it be used as compost like the worm castings? Also, is there any pathogen risks that these larvae could carry, whether human pathogens or plant pathogens?
@92mahl
7 жыл бұрын
I was also wondering how bad the smell would be?
@unsilentzone3357
7 жыл бұрын
the "goo" is a really high nutrient compost, similar to worm castings. The microbial life is very different though. You can take the goo and shovel it into your compost pile, to mix it with your carbons. Since its wet, it will break down differently than if you were using worm castings. my brothers didnt smell very bad. id say its just like a normal compost with rotting food. not like a sewage, even though thats what it looks like.

How do the hatched eggs(in the corrugated cardboard) end up in the waste below ?In other videos I have seen ,the cardboard is placed very near the waste..
@thehealthawakening
5 жыл бұрын
When the larvae hatches, it falls into the compost pile. Yes, you can lower the cardboard to the waste as you wish.
When I put out scrapes for BSF, who's to say what type of flies it attracts. I expect to attract "common house flies". Does it matter? Cause there's no way to control it.
@thehealthawakening
8 жыл бұрын
The BSF will process the scrape fast enough before they start rotting. Flies are attracted to rott. Also, BSF put off an odor that wards off flies.
Could you paint it all with a good exterior paint or would that not work?
@thehealthawakening

Will the larvae crawl up the wall and out the holes?
@thehealthawakening
5 жыл бұрын
No, they crawl up the ramp in the bin. The bin walls would be to steep for them to crawl up
Sir, please. I have two questions: Can you know why the side holes were made in the box, sorry; because I did not understand the video, does this not make flies escape? Does this fly need sunlight, light and water? Thank you,
@thehealthawakening
5 жыл бұрын
The adult flies should be able to freely come and go from the bin. You don't need to capture them. You are only producing larva from the eggs the flies lay in the bin. No, they don't need sunlight or water.
How do you keep away the house flies???
@thehealthawakening
5 жыл бұрын
The key is to not permit your waste to begin to spoil. You have to only add as much as the larva can process. BSF's don't like rotting compost and flies do. To get started it's a balancing act, but after time and you have a large population, it won't be an issue.
If you collect all the adult maggots, why you still make the holes on the vertical side and put the cardboard in? Where do they mate?
@thehealthawakening
7 жыл бұрын
The black soldier fly lays eggs in the cardboard and when they hatch, the larvae falls into the compost. Larvae is NOT an adult. The black soldier fly is the adult. The holes are on the side so the fly can get into the bin to lay the eggs in the cardboard.
IS there anyway i could learn more about this?
