    fish with them all the time here in Louisiana. Call them maggots. Am 88 and never realized they were soldier fly larvae. Gonna build one of your bins. Very good video. Can't understand most of the videos I watch but yours is very understandable. I really enjoyed it.Thanks much!

    I like this design a lot, because a lot of people have complained that, instead of a floor ramp, they use pipes and the larva don't crawl up it. This pretty much guarantees only one way up and out. I'll be using this design.

    This is my main fish bait. I came about them by accident. I make catfish chum in the summers here in Alabama, I had left a bucket of chum open and after a few weeks lots of grub were in it. After looking it up they were Black Soldier Flies. I knew aquaponics farmers used them to feed fish, so I figured why not try them for bait. they work better than anything. In fact I developed a bait harness to use them effectively called the Black Warrior Tip Rig. It was a blessing in disguise.

    Love it. We were just talking about making a Mealworm bin. Today my wife found BSF larvae in our feed. I started out researching to ID the worm and found your video. It just so happens we are Christians and have also done missions in Honduras. Part of my love for chickens began in Honduras. I saw a widow, in the hills, feeding 4 children a day with only 4 chickens and one duck. The eggs of the tied down birds provided food and trading options for medicine. I really enjoyed the video and will follow you. God bless Ryan

    The only thing I would do in addition is to paint the side walls with a water proofing of some sort. The concern about the bottom rotting out would also apply to the side walls once you start piling up the scraps in there.

    Can you update the latest video about this garbage disposal system and introduce the experience of using it in the past few years? I've watched a lot of videos, and your build is great. I also plan to make one based on your plan. I have searched all your videos since then, but I don't see any new video about the Black soldier fly waste disposal system. So I'm looking forward to your new video on how it works.

    God Bless your mission work. I live in Nicaragua and wanting to start my aquaponic system using your manual. What is the ratio of BSF, duckweed, and Moringa, for ultimate growth for tilapia. Do you use all fresh or dry it first?

  • @thehealthawakening

    @thehealthawakening

    7 жыл бұрын

    Marlon Ortiz You really have to be very careful. First and foremost, I recommend using a store bought fish food. I feel it's important due to the fact that they have produced a great product to help the growth of the fish. Then I supplement with the other. The black soldier flies has been an issue for us. Starting and maintaining a colony as some make it hasn't been that easy or at least here in Copan. I have mixed half and half of moringa and duckweed. Be very careful in only putting in as much as they will eat in about 10 to 20 minutes. You don't want it floating to the bottom and decaying.

  • @TheMarlonbrando1

    @TheMarlonbrando1

    If you can make the BSF happen, then yes, I would work with it. You will have to play with it and see what works with your fish. Main thing is to NOT overfeed. If they are not eating it, it does them no good having wasted food floating and sinking to the bottom of the tank.

    Hi. Couple of questions. Once you put the kitchen waste in, do you close the lid and let the flies find the food or do you keep the open for the flies and close it after a couple of days. Second, I m assuming this is s constant cycle. Keep on putting kitchen scraps and new generation will keep on popping up. Would appreciate the guidance on this. Thanks

  • @thehealthawakening

    @thehealthawakening

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes, you close the lid. There are holes on the side for the black soldier flies to come in. Yes, it's a constant cycle. You keep piling on scraps. The larva will continuously process it.

    What do you do with the "goo" that is left in the bin? Can it be used as compost like the worm castings? Also, is there any pathogen risks that these larvae could carry, whether human pathogens or plant pathogens?

  • @unsilentzone3357

    the "goo" is a really high nutrient compost, similar to worm castings. The microbial life is very different though. You can take the goo and shovel it into your compost pile, to mix it with your carbons. Since its wet, it will break down differently than if you were using worm castings. my brothers didnt smell very bad. id say its just like a normal compost with rotting food. not like a sewage, even though thats what it looks like.

    How do you keep away the house flies???

  • @thehealthawakening

    @thehealthawakening

    5 жыл бұрын

    The key is to not permit your waste to begin to spoil. You have to only add as much as the larva can process. BSF's don't like rotting compost and flies do. To get started it's a balancing act, but after time and you have a large population, it won't be an issue.

  • @vintageb8

  • @thehealthawakening

    The black soldier fly lays eggs in the cardboard and when they hatch, the larvae falls into the compost. Larvae is NOT an adult. The black soldier fly is the adult. The holes are on the side so the fly can get into the bin to lay the eggs in the cardboard.
