This is the most enlightening video about Black soldier fly farming that I have seen on KZread.. Other ones makes it look complicated as if you need to buy lots of equipment to do it..but this video makes it so simple that it took me back to my childhood memories of seeing them around our bins before the bin carrier come and pick the bins to dump them away. I will definitely subscribe..I love D's Asian people..they are much more simple and intelligent. Cheers

There are two more benefits from this setup up. Collect the 'water' that drains at the bottom. They are full of microbes that you can use to fertilize soil. You can also collect the larve waste and use it as fertilizer. You just need to watch the moisture in the soil. You want it to be like the texture of soil that is not too wet. You want to allow the good microbes.

Great job on thoes fly bins, I spent alot of time there when I was in the Marine Corps at Cubi Point. I really enjoyed going to the smaller islands, alot to see there, great friends and really good food.

The high amount of moisture will repel the BSFL to seek drier ground-right into the collection bin. If conditions are too “wet,” breeding will cease.

I have small set up of BSF. I always face competition with other domestic flies in my BSF rearing bin... 2nd problem I face low egg laying of female BSF

it is great to see this but it is extremely muky for the larvae's comfort. I know it it because i use composting using bsf. It should be just wet like a mildly squeezed out sponge from water. It should never be like a swamp sort of situation. They hate it and thats why you have so many white larvae crawl-offs.. In my bin i can put upto 2 kilos of waste and i wouldnt have to worry about over feeding or stench.

That is a super smelly way to do it. But probably good as a home made system. The Compot is much easy and not smelly.. but horses for courses as they say. This system is easy for harvesting the larvae if that is what you want to achieve.

what if you change the material of the bucket to some transparency materials? will it avoid the larvae growing?

you can add rice bran to your substrait so it wont look disgusting. you can then use the substrait as organic soil conditioner for plants

I have a bsf setup also. You are not harvesting them, they are escaping because of the anaerobic environment. The finished larvae have darker color. Add way more air and fluffy material to the bin. Please.

That's right too much water and this is already anaerobic environment, some of this larvae are regular flies and not black soldier fly larvae. Mature black soldier fly larvae are mostly dark in color and dry. You culture might be already infested with pathogens.

@@wuntoo1687 i use the compost mainly for the garden lawn and potted plants. It has BSFL castings included which has nutrients for the soil and plants. Before it even gets fully composted i use the black liquid as fertilizer.

Maybe not to be used for fruit bearing plants. I've seen yt videos discouraging compost from BSFL as it may have pathogens.

Does anyone know how the circular ramp was created in the bin? The bin looks plastic while the ramp seems to be made of concrete. Awesome video and great advice tegarding adding only enough food so there is none left over! (Keeps the odor down)

Parang wala pako nakikita dito sa manila ng BSF. I tried to attract them using smelly food scrap pero ordinary house flies lang pumupunta.

Mad, yung bang black soldier fly ay naturally available sa atin? balak ko pa sanang bumili dito ng BSF, nasa san franciso ako, you save me a ton.

If you don't use the larvae in time, do they reach the flying stage and start flying around, or do they just die in the bucket?

Yes they will. Unless you dry them or cook them.

So, I’m trying to figure this out. Been watching videos, going to feed them to my hens. How can I allow them to reproduce? I plan to have a ramp and then them drop straight into the area for the chickens to feed. But how can I make this allow for mating?

Have you figured it out? I am only in the beginning of the process but I m thinking of making a cubicle, with mosquito net all over it and with a door so I can get in. I would keep a compost bin as well as a bin full of soil where I would put the larvae to become flies. Once they hatch they can live in the cubicle and hopefully mate and reproduce. What do you think?

+chevy6299 Here in the tropics, the BSF’s are everywhere. The fruit flies are first to smell and colonize your bin. Then the larger flies will follow and excrete a pheromone that the fruit flies don’t like. Then the last fly to invade are the largest which are the Black Soldier flies hence the name soldier. Then will excrete a smell that the other flies won’t like and ending up overthrowing the other flies for them to get all the food. If you don’t have them because your climate is cold, you can order online and grow them inside your heated garage.

Faridzal Arbain you can go to a pet store and get a small tub of bsfl aka Phoenix worms or calci worms. You can also sometimes buy eggs on amazon or eBay. As they grow they’ll attract more bsf to lay eggs there. And the bsfl naturally repel house flies. House flies will not lay eggs there because they know bsfl will eat them

Ordinary house flies have mouths so they can contaminate your food. But you can still use them. Search for maggot bins for feeds.

+Madodel yes, cause I'm only feeding a single chicken, kept as a pet. would a half gallon paint pale would be enough to gather enough yield for a single chicken... and any tip on how can I maximized my chance of having a BSF on my unit regardless of the size of the container, like where to put it and what starting composed to put

I liked this video! But I found it hard to follow your narrative because of the music. The music is at one steady volume and sometimes makes it hard to hear your words clearly. Perhaps there is a way to reverse the volumes so that your voice is more easily distinguished from the music in the background. Also, yes I am fully English speaking, so it made your vocal accent quite varied in tone and pronunciation as you spoke while the music played. Over all it was a well done video with lots of good educational information. Thank you!

There is nothing wrong with your accent. I understood everything you said, however, the music is not necessary and is annoying and I say this to all presenters who feel the need to have music in the background, not just you.
