You can still do it if you want, of course, but it's definitely not as important to prune suckers on cherry/grape tomatoes. They'll still produce abundantly even if they are a little top heavy. Pruning suckers is more important with beefsteak and large-variety tomatoes, because it focuses the plant's energy into producing large fruits rather than abundant fruits.

I disagree. They taste better when they ripen on the vine. If you harvest them green, you might as well buy them from the grocery store. 🤪

Thanks for promoting this method. A neighbor across the street just took down a huge tree a few weeks back. Two days ago they started grinding it down. Went over and asked if he would sell me some wood chips. He said no. No sell! Take it! Well. We still have a pile in the backyard and are working everyday to organize and mulch the garden beds. It's awesome.

Have 3 sections in my garden, 2 wood chips over compost and 1 leaf mulch over mushroom compost. I am leaning towards leafs. Wood chips seem to impact some plants. The leaf mulch easier to work in. Mushroom compost I'm not sold on, it's nearly black and cooks from the sun, drains to fast and doesn't retain moisture well.

Keep the wood chips on the mushroom compost and leaf mulch over the regular. The fungus will accelerate the wood chips breaking down. I just did a deep mulch garden this spring and my plants are currently thriving in wood chips! Try to keep it very moist the first year if you can help it. The initial breakdown of the mulch seems to be the biggest hurdle. Halfway down my mulch is already black and full of worms and potato bugs. Good luck drew!

what do you do to organically control earworms on corn? they're giving me a lot of problems with my sweet corn and I've heard the worms can overwinter and give you problems the next year

I’m jealous of that tomato. Harvested first red skins and their size was disappointing but the tops died off after 90 days. Will be interesting to see as I planted more every two weeks. They are all in grow bags and last year the potatoes in the hard buckets were planted late and they did better. Dont know if it was the late planting or the plastic bucket and better water retention.

I'm Cherokee and we do something similar. WE Cherokee call corn, bean, and squash “the three sisters” because they nurture each other like family when planted together. And we sow a chaos garden with them and it works out well. The beans use the corn as an arbor to climb on. The pole beans, pull nitrogen from the air and bring it into the soil to benefit all three. The large leaves of the sprawling squash protect the threesome by creating living mulch that shades the soil, keeping it cool and moist and preventing weeds. The prickly squash leaves also keep away raccoons and other pests, which don’t like to step on them.

After watching you plant the sweet potatoes, I realized I probably could use some more mulch. I have a very thin layer and it might help, and I learned something else, I always thought the hairs on the tomatoes were where roots could sprout, I now know to look for the little bumps, Thank you and do you put anything special in the water for the suckers? Thank you again 👍

That sounds hard. Could you dig a pond, then use the soil dug to create a garden high spot or raised beds, create swales or hugelkulture mounds with logs, sticks, and leaves, or get fill and create drainage to make it work?

Don’t forget to tell people they can use pine needles…so many are afraid to use it because of the myth that they acidify the soil. I absolutely love it…holds all the leaves in place…

I bought a small wood chipper to get more mulch into my garden, and I gather up as many leaves as I can in the fall. I haven't found a source for hay or straw that isn't sprayed but I keep looking for it- it would make a huge difference if I could find some. My mulch is getting too thin for my liking, where I have managed to keep it piled up needs half as much water in this 100°+ heat.
