Excellent information, I wish that more people had a better understanding about the benefits of fluffy mulch. What it also does is that it keeps the soil temperature under control. Plants and trees and micro organisms prefer a certain temperature, and also a certain temperature difference between night and day time temperatures. If you can keep the soil temperature around 75F during the day and around 65F during the night, plants grow better and bigger and faster and healthier compared to plants and trees that have to deal with higher or colder temperatures, and larger temperature differences between day and night. The closer that you can get your soil temperature to that ideal temperature spectrum the better that your plants and trees will grow. 👍 Fluffy mulch does multiple good things for the soil and the micro organisms. Shade, temperature control, water retention, surface area for micro organisms, source of nutrients, habitat for insects, erosion protection, and there are probably a few more things to mention.

I'm in zone 5 and just getting my garden in. This year the soil should be nice after a couple years of hay. We're at a new property, planting fruit trees and such. I can't wait to taste my first beet and first tomato from this new garden. Thanks for all you do.

I'm 12 inches thick and fighting Bermuda rizones and fire ants. Not sure what to do about the ants. I don't want to use chemicals

Woodlice eat ant eggs and bio mass. Woodlice need moisture because they are a form of Crustacean that evolved from a marine habitat, and they still have their gills to breath, but their gills need to stay wet. The soil doesn't need to be soaking wet, what matters is that it isn't bone dry either. And you need to have some woody material mixed into the mulch with leaves on top so that the woodlice can easily wonder around in the shade. Wayne was absolutely right. Results take time. If you added mulch for the first time it is normal that you see some species taking a jump start in the new situation. It also takes time for the insect world to find a balance in the new situation. Also over time birds and small animals will figure out that there is a tasty snack hiding in the mulch and they are going to help you to keep the insect populations under control. Adding a bird bath to your garden makes a major difference. It attracts small birds, and soon enough they will start foraging in your garden. It is just not going to happen in a single season.

Same here. Ants are LOVING my mulched environment this year and I'm about 4 yrs into straw mulch. I hate them and have restorted to heavy ant bait/killer.
