I've been picking my tomatoes when they start blushing for 20 years. It's a necessity for me to have a successful harvest. My tomatoes always have a superior flavor compared to any store tomatoes.

This planting is how I usually do mine, I figure that they still get loads of roots as if they were deep planted. I can't do deep planting so far, I have a really shallow layer of good soil before running into sand/gravel/ clay. It's getting better from just piling on chips and compost though. I'll have to pick early this year, like you're describing. Birds. Birds. Peck a hole or two, then go on and peck another one up. I've heard that they do this for the juice. There's plenty of water for them in my yard, so, it must be for the vitamins as well as water. They sure don't eat much of it, just ruin them with holes.
I learn so much from you. I have gardened for a long time but never believe my tiny bit of know-how to be the end all be all. Thanks and keep sharing!

You are so welcome!
You are absolutely spot on! :) Wait for the blush then pick. My entire season was picked at blush, allowed to ripen in paper bags & then I freeze dry all my yummy tomatoes for long term storage as slices..but in my house that means...until I eat them all as snacks! lol They taste sweet as the day you slice them and cherry tomatoes are like candy chips. My favorite tomato, Cherokee Purple, is one the most difficult fruits to bring to vine perfection for the perfect texture, juicy but not mushy for the perfect sandwich slice. If you wait past blush on vine...everything including rains will destroy them...they almost always split from watering and Hornworms adore them above all others meaty sweet flesh. If folks are dead set to let their tomatoes sun ripen on vine: San Marzano tomatoes do well to ripen on the vine vs blush but only since they are smaller and take watering well due to the shape so they don't split. They aren't quite as sweet so the worms don't bother them as much as they are pretty protected with lots of bushy vine clusters.
Agree. 👍 I pick them green to fry. I pick them from blush to red, as needed. When the blush turn red, they taste the same as those red on the vine. Delicious.

Can't say you are wrong . Been picking this way for many years. I am converting my landlords garden to this style. He still is wanting to rototill. My oldest lives across the street, I taught her this method and see loves it . The clay soil here really likes the deep mulch.

I love a good garden tomato. Planted sideways or deep, they seem to do similarly well. Sweet potatoes going in is a magical time.😂

Thank you for stopping in for a visit and the kind message.
I didnt know the green ones I picked in the fall would turn red ,but they sat in the window and ripened .
Few years ago i lost quite a few when they got ate when they were ripe on vine...even if I would like to leave them on the vine longer the pest know they are ripe to. So I pick some point after breaker.
I plant so I learned a lot from you

Since I do all this myself I get behind answering comments as can imagine. I do read them all but there is just not enough time to answer them all as I would like. It does mean a lot to me that you took the time to visit my garden and I hope some of my story is helpful. Thank you again.

I have a great garden but it has partial shade. I can't do much about that but I want to maximize production with the existing conditions. Do you think using extra (organic) fertilizer will help mitigate some of the decrease in sunlight?
