Harvesting History LLC The interesting thing is that I had just finished planting 18 plants in the ground before I saw your vid. I wanted to do a couple of patio plants because we have a huge problem here in North Carolina keeping plants healthy through the summer. I felt good that I was already using compost and bone meal. I am purchasing that product for the blight. I actually ordered 20” pots from Amazon after watching. I hope that you will excuse me for not being exact. Honestly, with all that we are going through, you made my evening. I wish that I could pour you a glass of ice cold southern sweet tea😋.

I am a brand new gardener trying tomatoes for the first time I followed her instructions to the letter. What I’m confused about is the every other week to put a ring around the plant of the bonemeal or the tomato garden stuff what I don’t know where should I dig into the soil and put that in or just ring around and leave it on top of the soil. She has not answered me back and I’m getting nervous about what I’m doing now, so I wonder if you could reply to me?

@@janeschade7875 just sprinkle a ring of fertilizer on top of the soil…don’t pile your fertilizer up against the stem. It’s actually as simple as that!!!! Made me nervous…lol…but worked great!!!! Forgiven 212, thank you for your kind comment. It is very much appreciated. You still have a green thumb, but remember gardening at high altitudes is a complex process. High altitudes are usually low humidity regions. You need to water more. Also, you already know that your growing season is shorter so choose short season crops like Charantais melon over Hales Jumbo, OrangeGlo Watermelon over Georgia Rattlesnake, Bloomsdale Spinach, Fava Broad beans, DeCicco Broccoli over Broccoli Calabrese, red lettuces and Romaine lettuces and Asiatic and Oriental Lilies and daylilies. This is just a few suggestions. You will never lose your green thumb, but it might become a little paler until you get some experience with new meteorological conditions. Practice persistence and stay committed. There's soil under those nails of yours!

When I started out in the work force (now retired) my boss gave me something that I lived by the rest of the way. He said that when writing instruction procedures (or telling) for someone, do them in the "See Dick or Jane Run" (very basic early grade school learning) method. Above all, do not leave out any step that you will assume that all to be instructed will automatically know. There are many KZread videos on different subjects that use assumptions but they are not for the layman that wants to learn but are for the likewise KZread instructor in knowledge. This lady does a great job in how the process is to be done in a basic step by step mode (not a look how smart I am mode).

Hi...would love to c the fully grown tomato plant in the container u showed...thank u..
Two questions please. Where do you set the pot? on grass or soil and is my asphalt driveway or cement patio no good. I was told baking soda makes the tomatoes sweeter. A nice cheap additive to established plants. Thank you.
@harvestinghistoryllc3161
4 жыл бұрын
Michael, you can set the pots anywhere. For most of the 16 years we have been working on this container project (over 4200 plantings) our pots have been on asphalt. Remember, if you set them on soil or grass they will get weeds faster, so asphalt has its benefits. However, you will need to water more frequently. I don't know anything about baking soda. I checked my baking soda box and it told me that baking soda is pure sodium bicarbonate. The chemical formula is NaHCO3.. Sodium Bicarbonate when added to the soil will increase the soil's alkalinity. Alkaline soil causes plants and their fruits to have a sweeter flavor. That is why so many gardeners add lime to their soil before planting in the spring. So maybe adding baking soda will make your tomatoes sweeter. BUT, please know that I really don't know anything about baking soda making tomatoes sweeter..
You are the absolute best thank you so much for being so thorough and every step of this process! You are a godsend
Thank you for this video. I live in a city condo with a deck, and with the limited space I used two 20 gallon Vivosun fabric pots, and planted one Better Boy and one Celebrity seedling in each. I used your basic soil mix suggestion but substituted 60% outdoor potting mix for the topsoil, and then mixed in 20% composted steer manure and 20% peat moss. Every two weeks I use Tomato Maker fertilizer, a 4-2-6 mixture for calcium. I also add finely crushed egg shells to the soil as I get them. So far, I'm very impressed with the results. After 44 days, both plants are setting large numbers of fruit. This is my first experience using the fabric pots as well and I don't think I will ever go back to plastic if these results hold up. Again, thank you for your video because I believe your mix recommendation (60-20-20) of soil, organic material, and peat moss is excellent.

You remind me of my 7th grade teacher Mrs Berger. A no nonsense teacher , but you could tell behind that shell she was a sweetheart. Thanks for an amazing tutorial.

Thank you for such an informative video. One question, can one also plant basil in the same pot with the tomato? I’ve been told that basil and marigolds are good companion plants.

Ana, Basil in the pot with the tomato is a wonderful combination. Don't bother with the marigolds. They have lost the fragrance they once had for deterring critters, but basil is an excellent companion plant for tomatoes.

New subscriber to ur channel as well as to gardening. Love ur video. I live in zone 8b (Georgia) and want to start a fall garden. What can i plant in containers?

Deborah, it depends on where you live in Georgia. If you live in the hill country it is much colder in the winter. If you live near the coast the weather is a lot like northern Florida. If you live in the hill country, you can plant zinnias, nasturtiums, sunflowers now and they will bloom in September, October and maybe November. You can start beets, kale, carrots, lettuce (the red or Romaine varieties) leeks, dill and basil now and onions, garlic, spinach, arugula, and cilantro in September or early October. If you live near the coast you can plant dahlia tubers, zinnias, sunflowers, nasturtiums now. You can plant beans, carrots, squash, melons starting now through mid-August and basil, dill, leeks, cilantro, lettuce, beets, kale in early September. You can plant spinach, onions, garlic, arugula and cilantro starting in October. Hope this helps a little. Welcome to the world of gardening. There is no more satisfying, rewarding and healthy pastime. So glad you subscribed to us!

Can I use a 5 gal bucket? when is the best time to plant tomatoes in georgia?

Yes, but make sure you have drilled lots of drainage holes in both the bottom and the sides of the bucket.
I just loved this presentation! I used bone meal as I planted ONE plant in my 20” pot. Will buy tomato tone tomorrow. Missed knowing about copper fungicide a few days ago when I planted and hope it’s not too late to work that in. Great tutorial. Thanks!

You can also use dried eggshells for calcium, and they are free!

Crush the shells till they're almost a powder otherwise they take way to long to breakdown to be useful
