Joe the Movie Guy

Joe the Movie Guy

If it comes in the form of movies, superhero films, Television Shows, video games, or in any sports team that I root for, I'm a sucker for a good story.

You've articulated this perfectly. My timeline of losing interest in him aligns with yours exactly. I'm not a prude at all, but the vulgarity struck me as off-putting early on too. I suspect that he was adversely affected by film school, and it sucked the soul/whimsy/humor out of him. He seems like an impressionable person to me whose going through his "rebellious" phase way too late because of his cultist upbringing.

Its definitely since he started making his own movie. Suddenly "Movie makers and every one, cast crew, all of them, they must not be criticised, I should know, I make movies now". But........even film makers criticise other film makers. Its just............talking about things like that is part of being human and without criticism things will never improve.

I may hate Disney for what they did to Willow and Indiana Jones but I refuse to conform to the childish notion that they ruined Star Wars. There has been good content from this current era, The Last Jedi was what made me a full-on fan again and even the worst aspects of this new age I don't even mind much. Everybody has an opinion and that's perfectly fine. What's not fine is people being a goddamn nazi about it.

I had to unsubscribe from his channel because I can't stand seeing his smug, stupid looking smile anymore. He won't offer any critique if a movie is bad, but still calls himself a critic. He's playing his audience and not being authentic. I wouldn't have an issue at all if he stopped calling himself a critic and stopped making content with the word "review" in the title. He just seems to have this attitude now that he's better than everyone else. Smug and full of himself. I think the Jehovah's Witness stuff has severely traumatized him, and I'm saying that as a licensed therapist. I see red flags all over the place in the change in his demeanor over the years, albeit just in his videos. The fact that he made a video explaining and justifying that he is going to do a series of old movies, was a huge sign of trauma; that he felt the need to justify talking about older movies on his own channel. That Madame Web video was filled with avoidance and copping out, which again, can be signs of past trauma; trying to please everyone. At the end of the day, I think he's going about it all wrong and probably needs some time to process his time with the Jehovah's Witness stuff. There's no way he's over that stuff. You could be right about the rewrite thing, traumatizing him as well.

Great review, yeah I would say is fine as well not amazing but not awful or terrible as many others have been saying or claiming, and I agree this is not a woke propaganda movie! Brie Larson I do like as actress and I do think she’s great choice to play the character of Captain Marvel but I did think it’s the direction and how her character was written wasn’t really well handled, minus few spots here and there, which is real shame I do think her performance in Endgame and The Marvels is a lot better in those movies alone. But I do like Sam L Jackson as young Nick Fury I thought he had a blast on this movie and I do like the 90’s throw back they have and young Agent Coulson who’s great to see again. And the skrulls I was actually rooting for them and I had moment of “ I need help for some reason” 😂 and as far for Secret Invasion series which is well…. We will save that for another time! I don’t hate it as many people do, I do watch it time again and I do but I will admit that the writing it could’ve done better with the character development, and maybe could’ve done better in the long run. Goose The Cat probably I will never look at cats in the same way again after that! 😂

Yeah I rewatch this in prep for The Marvels because I haven’t seen it since it came out and while I don’t think it’s a stinker like certain people do, I do think it’s one of the weakest MCU movies. Just too bland and underwritten for me, and failed to make Carol an interesting character. Like you said, Brie Larson ain’t the problem, she’s doing fine with what’s she’s given, the problem is that I never felt the movie went into the depth of her character, in fact it does a lot telling and not showing and I feel like maybe if we started when Carol was a child then enrolling in the military with Maria, meeting Mar-Vell and then getting captured, it would give a chance to show a bit more of her personality and flaws on how she could be a bit insecure and hot headed as she reacts before she thinks as a character flaw. Like it could be like Marvel’s answer to Robocop, but it would probably allow Larson to play to her strengths rather than just be a blank slate from the beginning. I’ve seen people say somebody like Charlize Theron or Katee Sackoff (from Battlestar Gallactica or as you know Bo-Karan from Mandolorian) would’ve been a better fit, but the character would still be boring as hell if she was written the same way. That’s kind of the frustrating thing with Captain Marvel judging by her appearances so far cause there’s an interesting character under the surface, but so far it’s barely fletched out, rarely allowing Larson to truly shine outside of some moments. I think if this movie, along with Endgame, set her up better, I feel like audiences wouldn’t be as apathetic towards the character and Larson’s portrayal and she would’ve been perfect as the new main face of the franchise after Tony and Cap. Like Marvel, you got an Academy Award winning actress, showcase that and give her better writing since now she’s probably now in supporting roles or ensembles after The Marvels bombed. And oh yeah the Skrulls, yeah… I don’t want to see the Skrulls after what happened in Secret Invasion 🤦‍♂️

Another unfairly shat on character under the unbearable online woke scrutiny placed on Disney. Next to Rey from SW. I'll take both any day over the likes of Bella Swan from Twighlight and Alice Abernathy from Resident Evil. Those two are less forgiving.

Yeah I enjoyed this movie, but not as much as some of Garland’s previous work like Ex Machina and Annihilation. I think it could’ve explored a bit more of the lore going on to fully grip me and there were some plot conveniences, but very solid overall. Well made, great performances (especially Dunst and Cailee Spaeney), and intense and disturbing in spots. Also Jesse Plemons will forever type cast playing a creep/bad guy between this, Breaking Bad, Game Night, Judas and the Black Messiah, etc. But he is good at it though. 😂

I don’t get why he is into culinary items to the point of being in love with them. Strange lol. Ya I know it’s some weird term that is supposed to mean something but all of these “sexualities” are splitting hairs or on the other hand, overcomplicating things. You’re attracted to someone because you’re attracted to them. I’ve always thought the idea of “being attracted to people regardless of identity or sex”…sooo bisexual? Why over complicate things? It might as well be “being attracted to both genders and people that follow woke ideals” oh ya and caveat “absolutely not attracted to anyone that is not woke and especially conservatives”.

On EFAP they analized his video on Madame Web and then read an interview the director gave to Variety I believe, funny thing is that about 80% of the ideas on the movie were from the director, not the studio. She pretty much had total liberty to do whatever she wanted. I stopped watching his videos two years ago. Now I watch Film Threat, Jeremy Jahns and Critical Drinker.

Ironically, Star Wars fans have turned on George Lucas after he defended Bob Iger. Like GL said *'It's like poetry. It rhymes.'* Star Wars fans also believe they have no one to trust. They hate Kennedy, Iger, Chapek, Abrams, Johnson, Lucas, Filoni etc. They've became as delusional as Anakin when he turned.

I think if they decide to make a 4th Tobey Spider-man movie it should be set up before Avengers Secret Wars to have it come out either in 2027 or 2028. Another idea is if they go with Vulture as the villiain it would nice to see John Malkovich play the character but due to his age i think a good second contender would be Jon Cryer play the Vulture.

As violent as this film was, in reality it was much worse. Mel Gibson even says he toned down the scourging and crucifixion scenes as they were extremely violent. He knew people would stop watching at certain points so he intertwined scenes of flashbacks to give the audience a break. Jesus Passion was so violent that he was unrecognizable after his scourging. This is the closest a movie has come to the true Passion Jesus went thru.

To comment on a couple of the “creative liberties” vs the Bible in the review One of the gospels does mention Judas attempting to return the treason money before hanging himself. So I think it is highly likely that he felt tremendous guilt. Jesus saying to Mary Magdalene “sin no more” in the flashback is a creative license because He actually said that to a different woman who committed adultery. (Mary Magdalene if I’m remembering correctly was healed by Jesus but over seven demons not adultery) so the movie merges two gospel stories there I suppose.
