State of Blockbusters in Cinema, Nolan vs. Scorsese | Joe the Movie Guy's Thoughts

Ойын-сауық

Apologies for getting slightly heated, just needed to get this off my chest due to almost everybody on KZread taking a certain side. Please try to be respectful and understand where I'm coming from because it's not my intention to upset anybody but if I do end up getting severe backlash then so be it.

Agreed! I hadn’t heard Nolan’s quote but I agree with him! I do think more original genre films should be made and supported but they can still exist with the IPs (sometimes you even need the money from the IPs to get other films made)

They’re still being made, but a lot of them are relegated to streaming or they just don’t get as much attention on the big screen where studios tend to fail on that front as of late. But it proves my point that they should find a way to make them coexist not try to exclude one in favor of the other like Nolan suggested.

@@JoeTufanoTheMovieGuy Agreed! And yes original films are made their just not seen (which is also part of the problem/hypocrisy of those who claim there should be no IP films/more original films)

It’s defiantly interesting to look at the state of blockbusters at this point in time, especially with how things were last year for film. I remember Kevin Smith saying that why he believes Martin Scorsese said what he said was in part that he didn’t grow up with comic book films, whereas other people have. Comic books have gotten more and more popular over the decades and so if one grew up reading them and then saw the various film adaptations of said Superheroes, then people would love them, where Scorsese himself didn’t grew up reading comics and the films he saw were the old Warner Bros. gangster films, Orson Welles films and came up during the Independent Film movement where films of that time, like from John Cassavetes, also inspired him quite a bit and so films like that resonate with him, in turn he calls those films cinema, where comic book films, specifically Marvel, wouldn’t resonate or even appeal to him. Of course, Scorsese doesn’t overtly bash them beyond saying they’re not cinema, even going as far to say that they’re not easy to make and that they’re spectacles, though he is worried that the smaller indie films may go away from the theaters and thus the only real theatrical experience one would get anymore is just big blockbuster type films with no room for small independent films. I’ve gotta say, I lean more towards Nolan’s thought on the discussion, which I’m sure is partially influenced on the fact he himself made three of the best comic book films of all time, but I can see where Scorsese is coming from, but he had to have another interview where he was able to clarify what he said the first time, which by that point his comments already got taken out of context and made to look even worse than they really were. Thing is, things like this go in cycles. Sometimes there are major blockbusters that are the things to make and watch more than any other kind of film and then there comes the time where the films the audience wants are smaller and a bit more intimate character driven stories compared to average blockbusters. There’s an ebb and flow to these things and at the moment, people are heading towards to wanting something different to the major big blockbuster films that have been dominating the field for the most part in the last decade. Thank you for the video Joe, this is an interesting topic to discuss. Hope you’re doing well and take care!

Sean is one of my favorite KZreadrs; I've been a fan of his for 8 years so it's cool to have you interact with this world a bit; I disagree with him a lot but he's a smart and funny creator. I hate that people are attacking superhero cinema. Spielberg and Lucas were attacked for ruining prestige cinema with their dumb blockbusters back in the day and the tables turned. This too will change. Good ol Nolan; he's also said he was a fan of Fast and Furious going back to Tokyo Drift. That's amazing. Great video.

Oh yeah, I’m not throwing any shade towards Sean at all. I don’t see eye to eye with him on a lot of his perspectives, but he certainly does know what he’s talking about. And good on you for pointing out examples of Spielberg and Lucas Because I think that if we were to wind back the clock, we probably hear something similar back in the late 70s and early 80s and it’s just a pattern repeating itself throughout time. And thank you 🙂

I may have my criticisms of Nolan in the past few years, but I agree 100% in his approach. Not that I don’t see where Scorsese is coming from and that studios are more interested in putting the focus on big blockbuster franchises like Marvel over some small indies, but the whole “It’s not cinema” approach does come off as a bit bougie. Even from other directors like Denis Villeneuve, Ridley Scott, Francis Ford Coppola who were probably more harsher than him, it did came off as them discrediting the hard work that goes into the movies. Sure the MCU has their misses and ain’t above criticisms but to say that all of them are just nothing but spectacle and simply theme park rides just comes off as someone who hasn’t most of them. They don’t make you contemplate on life and human condition like say an arthouse film would but that’s not their job, their job is to entertain the audience not be thought provoking, same with other big franchises that you can also classify as theme park rides but don’t get as much backlash, look at Star Wars, Jurassic Park (Well at least the first one), and especially the Avatar films. And you know taste is different for everybody and Scorsese is part of a different era so I can understand if these films don’t appeal to him or the actors and directors who agree with him, but it’s obvious the MCU has connected with a lot of people over the years, even in their slump recently and they’ve shown at their best they can be emotionally satisfying. Plus you don’t hear people say “Oh I got horror movie fatigue or comedy fatigue” even though we get plenty of bad ones each year as well as good ones. Nolan’s right, big blockbusters have their place and they can be entertaining, but sometimes audiences are craving something new and original. And I hate when people say, “Oh we don’t get original movies nowadays, all we get is major IP franchises.” when there’s plenty of great smaller independent/arthouse films out there, look at A24 and Neon for example. Every genre, no matter if it’s big or small, should step up their game and not play it safe. We can have great movies like Spiderverse, Guardians 3, John Wick, Godzilla Minus One, alongside films like Poor Things, The Iron Claw, Past Lives, Talk to Me, and Killers of the Flower Moon. Hell Barbenheimer was a big event last year and was a big success. Also stop over-bloating their budgets and having the films compete against each other a week apart. I love Scorsese, but I feel like Nolan had a better answer on how to handle this larger Hollywood problem and shouldn’t take advantage of their audiences because of it’s a known brand. Also wish journalists stop asking directors their thoughts on superhero films. 🙄

I think the MCU has a lot of deep character moments in some of their projects but not quite to the levels of something thought provoking depending on which piece of media you’re consuming. To your point about horror, films, and comedies, I think most of us who are old enough to remember. There was a time where romantic comedies were all the rage until certain people kept dismissing them or because we got a slew of bad ones, which is why we don’t really see as much on the big screen anymore (except for “Marry Me” with JLo which I have yet to see). Bleecker Street Media is another small indie studio that released films like “Pawn Sacrifice”, “Trumbo” and “Eye in the Sky”. As for those who complain that we don’t get original movies anymore need to put their money with their mouth is. They can see the bigger stuff as many times as they like but it wouldn’t hurt for them to give that sixth or seventh ticket to an original movie that deserves it. But also some advice to those people: don’t support a movie for the simple fact that it’s original because that doesn’t always equate to quality entertainment.

I think I saw your comment under Sean's video as well as the few comments you brought up. Some movies ain't for everyone and everyone in Hollywood has an ego they take pride in. People like Martin and Christopher are no exceptions.

I mean, if you’re successful in Hollywood, odds are you’re going to have an ego of some kind. How you go about expressing your views are another thing entirely.

Nolan has always been a class act. Never insults other filmakers or talk bad about their movies. Heck he watches fast furious, macgruber, diary of wimpy kid and naked gun he even a fan of michael bay and m night films. Sad critics and youtubers hate Nolan tho

I love what you said! Nolan has the right idea, and while I do welcome new stuff, I still love the giant IP movies and such. The thing people are forgetting is that we want quality, not quantity!

Quality should be the main thing especially when it comes to original content which is what I hear people constantly cry for every single day on this platform but they should also keep in mind that just because something is original and does NOT make it good.
