Born Handy

Born Handy

Born Handy is a channel about the random things a Handyman is asked to take on, and how to do them. My videos can range from automotive, to carpentry, and any other "odds & ends" that can fit in between. I try to organize the topics by playlists and end screens, so if you find one subject you like, let me know by commenting, and I can try to get more videos on the topic.

This channel is all about passing knowledge, so I'll be posting tool reviews, how-to's on all sorts of other topics, and any helpful tips that do-it-yourself-er's can benefit from.

Hope you can learn something, and enjoy the video while you do it.

Jason with Born Handy.

I have a 10 metre x 15 metre shed build starting today. 32.8 feet x 40.2 feet. I am in Australia and you can't legally build a shed without local council approval and a building certifier. That way they make sure it is designed and engineered correctly, meets all weather and building codes. In order to get this the building supplier has to provide all drawings, engineering plans and construction details. They provide these via a client portal on the internet. The shed components (kit) was a custom design by myself and cost me AUS$26,423.(USD$17,562) delivered to site. Windows were extra and I sourced those myself. My builders are arriving on site today (Sunday) and as I am remote they are camping on site for a week. Here's a link to the build if interested kzread.info/dash/bejne/dGmBrqVtoajMlLg.html

I have had positive results with choice home warranty with my mother's garbage disposal unit and washer and dryer. No luck with her air conditioner though. My ex wife tried to get her refrigerator's ice maker replaced by them and they wouldn't approve it, so I suppose it's who you speak with and the mood they're in that day lol As for car warranty, I purchased QualityProtect for 3800 when i purchased my used vehicle and they covered a new air conditioner, new alternator and 14k for a new engine. They did require 1 oilchange maintenance record for approval.

Weve done four of these, well 3 me and friends. The 4th friend had it built. His cost double what ours did. We did cheap pole barns piece by piece. Left the inside gravel and piece mealed pouring it ourselves with a mixer we bought. Pick a size, put the poles in the ground, roof. Enclose. Cheapest way to go. Steel rockets the price up.

I already added 2 more and this is directly/indirectly implied in 1 of them but this could be a stand-alone reason. Since the warranty company's contractor is going to jack-up their estimate to cover the "reimbursement" from the warranty, you're going to pay much more "net" for the same repair/replacement to a shyster contractor who IS IN the warranty company's pocket than you would have just paying a reputable contractor who IS NOT. It's like getting a big discount on a new car but getting peanuts for your trade-in to more than cover the discount. HOME WARRANTY SHELL GAME...WANNA PLAY?

I'll give you 2 more from my first and only experience with a seller-paid warranty (maybe Choice or Select...not AHS) in early 2018. My 2 water heaters quit putting out hot water on a 5-year-old home (or my crack inspector missed it before closing). 1. The warranty company sent out 2 Hondurans who between them knew 3 words of English: "sixty-five-dollars" (for the visit). Because of their lack of ESL, they misinterpreted the badge near the bottom of the water heaters to say that they were something like 20 years old and WAY out of warranty, while the badges actually said that they conformed with some regulation from somewhere between 1995 and 2000. 2. After getting paid for nothing, they sent me a proposal to replace both water heaters for $3,200 and the warranty would cover $500 or $750 on each, leaving me to pay, besides that $65, an additional $1,700 to $2,200. I contacted the manufacturer, pretty upset that the builder would have installed old water heaters and, at their request, I emailed photos of those badges. Turns out, the manufacture dates were in the serial numbers and still covered, except for a "restocking fee" for the defective ignitors. One visit by a REAL contractor and a $250 restocking fee and I had hot water for the remaining 5 years I lived there and I'm sure the next owner still showers comfortably today. Tomorrow is the end of Year 2 with 2-10 Home Warranty Company in my NEXT home and they're really pushing me to renew, but my experience so far dealing with the builder-paid period says "no." Every issue gets kicked back to the builder and I have to call and schedule the contractors, myself, who show up in beat-up no-company-name vehicles and know very little English (I'm in Texas). When the woman from 2-10 calls back tomorrow, I hope I have my final repair to my whole home ground, but that contractor told me in broken English, when I finally got a call back after 5 days, that it's probably not the ground wire, but in the panel or the outlet. If it's not covered by the warranty, I'll send him on his way and call a REAL contractor. Thanks for the list; I'll have it handy when the slickster from 2-10 calls. By the way, I cancelled that warranty for a refund at the old place immediately after "water(heater)gate" and that more than covered the repair and the worthless visit fee.

If you don't change this pcv unit, the engine may begin to push too much oil towards the oil scraping rings on each piston, and all six of them may have too much oil to handle and it can burn on to the scraping rings, and then the rings will not be able to move freely, so the engine begins to use a lot of oil. Than it becomes a big job. The engine is good, but it's a modern low friction engine build, so oil scraping rings are a bit low, so not much can give. Hence the potential problem. Note: it is not always that this hiss can be heard; the problem can still arise. The sets where you only get a membrane and the small cover is not original parts, but aftermarket parts, that is not the same quality. Whether you will use it or not, is of course up to you. Also, change the oil frequently. NOT every say 20.000-25.000 km. But no sooner than say 8.000-10.000 km maximum. And always an oil filter too. Do NOT overfill the engine with the fresh oil. Kind regards.

I didn't see anything involving a footer being poured. Did you build just on top of a slab?

  • @BornHandy
    @BornHandy2 ай бұрын

Good catch. I asked about it during the build as well. Every single manufacturer suggested the same layout. 8 inch concrete around the perimeter, 6 inch throughout the center. Our frostline here is only 4 inches, so no footer required here. Monolithic slab is the standard.

Hey man. I just stopped by to say that I just completed the build of two stands, almost as fancy as yours. They’re going in a room with old black and white family photos, in old frames. I used your antique painting method… and they turned out better than I expected. From 3 feet away, they look like I brought them home from the antique store! I ended up using a cabinet and furniture oil enriched enamel, for the tough shell. White with a dirt colored brown. Thanks for the tips!!! All I could find on the interwebs was crappy chalk paint for antiquing. You’re a hero in my book.

As a long term plumbing, heating, AC contractor I agree wholly with how Born Handy has represented the realities encountered by both home owners and legitimate service contractors. It's generally a big mess & letdown with negative emotions after the facts. As to real estate agents, they really do not care at all. Nor do they want any honest assessments of the property prior to the sale. While home warranty inspections services are a separate business service I find their value on a scale of 1-10 at about 3. They do find some problems, but very very often ignore major issues. Don't want to kill the goose laying the golden egg. Mostly real estate sales tools. In that arena do yourself a favor by finding well qualified HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, and other trades, pay them for an inspection. Likely they will give you very honest reports for a very good price. They value good customers & want long term healthy relationships based on good service.

4 years later... and I have a question!!! I'm in the process of building 2 x 75 gallon stands, similar in design to yours. I watched the video, rescanned to see if you said, but I can't find the part where you specifically stated what paints you used. I think I think I heard something about acrylic paint for the top coat/distressing, but I'm not totally sure. What paint was used for the base coat; acrylic, oil, latex? Have you had any problems with the acrylic paint getting wet, assuming it is acrylic? I imagine it's probably fine as long as it doesn't stay wet for an extended period, considering acrylic is "water resistant".

This video is full of problems. How many of you hired a licensed HVAC and then later found they didn't do a correct job either? Please, as if a license HVAC company is going to do a better job than a DIYer is so far from the truth. I installed two of these units without having any knowledge ever of before doing any kind of HVAC. I did a ton of research on heat load, etc... before replacing two old existing system with Mr. Cool (same as GREE) and after a mostly successful initial install, I began running into what I would call suboptimal performance. So the professionals you speak of, completely screwed up the duct work. I found this out after buying probes to measure static pressure. My old system had safety sensors cut to prop up old system. Yea, more professionals. Let's talk about that insurance. Do any of you want to pursue some kind of legal recourse in the middle of summer trying to get things rectified. The one thing I can agree on, is if you're going to take this on, buy digital manifold set, a set of manometers and psychrometers and you'll be fine. The more you learn the more you can avoid the scammy HVAC companies. I'd rather be a gluten for punishment while learning how to take care of my own system than being taken by the countless HVAC scammers and "pros" who are really not "pros." They are only called "pros" because they paid for that rubber stamp. Not a single HVAC tech has ever measured static pressures, took inddor wetbulb into account when charging the system... they all have winged it.

There is one home warranty company that does great work and abides by the customer, Americas Preferred Home Warranty company, would be my best recommendation. They allow the homeowner to choose a local licensed contractor to come and inspect the issue, and even do the work on the spot if they can accept credit card over the phone and it is a covered repair! My brother had them and he swears up and down about how great they handled every situation he had.
