How to insulate a metal building. Can you DIY a 30 x 40 tube steel building? Part three, insulation

This is all about how I was supposed to insulate my building. I wasn't able to film it all, but I got the majority of what you need to know on insulating a steel tube building while it's being built.

The shop build series was excellent! Thanks for taking the time to make the videos. You packed a bunch of great info in them and what I really liked was your honesty about your screw ups. That's what helps us all. Thanks again!

Jason I just found your channel. I have been toying with the idea of buying land close to where I live and building a house on it. The cost of the home building is what has been making me think twice about it. I don't know if what you are using would be something one can live in or even have a 2nd floor, but it has made me think of other possibilities like the "famous" barndominiums. Thanks for the food for thought and the good information. Now to start doing homework and reaching out to the county to see where they stand. Have a good one and keep them coming!

Jason, just found your channel and have been watching your videos on building your shop. It’s looking good so far. Having grown up and worked with my dad who put up red steel buildings/warehouses, one thing I would recommend is to line the inside perimeter of the building with plywood or metal. This will give you more areas to hang items, protects the insulation, and would keep someone from unscrewing the exterior sheets and breaking in (which spray foam would make it a little harder).

Thanks. Yeah your videos convinced me a DIYer could reasonably assemble the frame, but then should hire the insulation and siding!

Jason, Excellent video series and Thank You. I plan on putting up a building fairly soon and I would like to do a 30' x 40' also. I'm going to need 16' sides so I can put a vehicle lift in. Will also need a thicker section of concrete where the lift will go. These videos have helped me understand the process. I like the vertical side wall panels also. I understand that with the vertical panels you need the hat channel. I want to go with the spray in insulation. Watching the footage of the guys installing the fiberglass with vinyl backing insulation just goes to show you how you need to watch installers at every step of the way. I can't believe that they would roll that insulation out where there was standing water on the floor. A quick going over with a blower or broom would have eliminated those puddles. Now they have installed wet fiberglass up against the metal roofing and there will be a stink from the mold that will grow on it. I also noticed one other thing that I wouldn't have done and here's where I get hammered by viewers. That's where you had the concrete finishers use a broom finish on the pad outside and leading up to the roll up doors. I absolutely hate broom finish concrete. on exterior concrete finish I prefer wood trowel finish. The reason is you get just as good a grip as broom finish but without the hassle of trying to sweep it off. I understand that we have leaf blowers now but still try to blow off those sweet gum leaves after they fall and get wet from rain. The leaf blower will have a hard time with it. The concrete finishers will try to sell you on broom finish because it's easier and takes less labor to do. but it also covers up imperfections in the concrete. I was talking to a guy who had a metal building installed and he said he was happy but if he were to do it again he would eliminate the ridge vent. he showed me where the wind blew dirt and sand up the roof into the opening at the ridge and it fell al over his cars.

Although the spray foam is better than nothing for your case, all of the members in the wall and the ceiling are now thermal bridges between the inside and outside. The full coverage of the rolled insulation helps prevent this.

I have (5) of these type buildings don't even waste your time with any type of insulation but spray foam. I have tried other types and the spray foam makes the building so much stronger.

Enjoying your videos as I'll be building a tube metal frame building in the future. A little Monday morning quarterbacking here, but why not insulate with foam board? Closed cell foam board is definitely DIY-friendly; it's lightweight, it cuts easily with a handsaw, and it matches R value of spray foam, meaning if you get R5 for every inch thickness of spray foam, you get the same in foam board, so 3" thick foam board gives you R15. It's also less expensive than spray foam since you're not paying for labor. Plus, foam board has already off-gassed at the factory, so no need to worry about that the way you do spray foam. It looks like the studs here are at least 3" deep, so you could, as some suggested, sheet the interior.

At the time of the build, foam board was hard to get. The price was insane, and the selection was low, so spray foam it was.

Thankyou for putting the effort of going to another job site for more information. Don't be too hard on yourself about not adding the rolled insulation. This added information in this video series for people that need to add insulation to existing buildings. To quote my brother-in-law, "often times it is not how well you can do the job the first time but, how well you can fix it up after you foul it up. PeeWee Herman quote: "I meant to do that."

agreed in all ways spray foam is better. better r value better, air tightness (not that this is much of a concern in a shop with leaky bay doors), helps add strength to the entire building. if closed cell was used it would also create a water tight barrier all while adding alot more strength when compared to open cell. only down side is it cost a lot more than batts but is far superior in every way

Might've been a mistake as far as what you were given for insulation, but I think spray foam is way better for a steel building anyways. Overall I'd be happier with spray foam.

I was told the fiberglass goes in ward and the moisture runs down the plastic covering on outside

  • @jameswright-2024
    @jameswright-2024 Жыл бұрын

so, the insulation goes on the outside of the steel frame to prevent thermal bridging and on the inside goes the vapor barrier (since condensation will cause problems if air conditioner is run inside the building and metal is still exposed)? In away, the steel frame must be insulated or "sandwiched" between 2 layers of insulation

Hey brother i wonder what the difference in R- value between your spray on and this Batting is? Also cost. Ordering the building without insulation and spray foam difference. Thanks for the video brother .

  • @josephhalas1676

The biggest flaw of the installation is in the videos you were showing they did not roll up the white Vapor Barrier material to protect the fiberglass from water they cut it flush to the ground so if water goes under it will soak them into the insulation and cause damage

odd your video was about "how to apply bubble foil insulation" when your building has spray foam, I know you missed the step but most would prefer spry foam if they can afford it, imagine the difference is night and day w/foam? I have a 50x60 w/ no bubble/foil and am on hold for my spray foam due to costs!

  • @mojohans9463

IMHO that looks about R4 at best... only 2-3 inches thick. Problem being with that type of system is when you screw the metal on the outside, through the insulation, it compresses to the point of mostly zero R value. Spray foam is more expensive but can give a higher R value per inch (4-5), It also air seals the building and makes the whole structure more secure by bonding to the metal panels and creating a solid system. Hope that helps.

As I can tell the insulation is a 2 or 2.5in batting, not the best and the fact the the roofing and siding flattens the insulation at the contact points diminishes the insulation effectiveness. It would be better to install a vapor barrier on the frame covered by roofing or siding and then install insulation on the inside. Covering the inside wall will protect and increase the effectiveness of any insulation. Do this as soon as possible.
