50ft Below

50ft Below

As kids aged 12 and 17 we started scuba diving because our dad was into it. Reluctantly we did an introduction dive, if your dad is into it it can't be much right? Wrong! It was awesome and not after long we were certified scuba divers.

Fast forward 10 years and we both are scuba instructors, who worked in Bonaire and South Africa. We where lucky enough to dive on a lot of places around the world and even got the chance to begin our own scuba dive center in the Netherlands. We can truly say that scuba diving has chanced our lives.

Living the scuba life for so long has thought us a few things about the sport. Things we think can help you as a beginner diver or even when you have a bit more experience. That's why we founded 50ft Below. We want it to be a reliable source for scuba gear reviews and advice. There are no sponsorship or ads, just straight up scuba advice!

Really sorry but this video is close to useless. You are Not teaching people *how* to not breathe water up their nose. Some people no matter how long they practice will suck water up their nose as they breathe from the reg. You need to tell them what to do with their soft palate! For the small proportion of people with this problem your video SHOULD have said... Can you blow up a balloon without pinching your nose? If "yes" you can scuba. Can you suck a really thick milkshake up a straw without having to hold your nose? If "yes" then you can dive without a mask. The cue to learn the skill for someone who just can't seem to do it is to start with a snorkel but try to suck/clench really hard as if they are sucking the world's thickest milkshake. This is the cue they need to close their soft palate and unlock the skill. All these videos are made by diving instructors who did this skill instinctively and Don't understand the problem this small proportion of students have. Give your students this cue and they'll master the skill

You mention that when you go up , when checking your SPG, you need to deflate your BCD. I think it also help to try to “micro” adjust your buoyancy by breathing out to go a bit down and in to go a bit up. Of course, this only works with Open Circuit.

Could you please clarify something for me? I've always believed that you shouldn't hold your breath while scuba diving. Recently, during advanced sidemount training (theory), I was instructed to hold my breath while transitioning from my first tank (attached to a line) to my second tank (also attached to a line, 1m apart). After giving my instructor the concern of "you shouldn't hold your breath while scuba diving," my instructor then posed the question, "Why would you need to release air if the pressure doesn't change?" The risk of releasing air while switching regulators is that it could alter your buoyancy, which is something you definitely want to avoid when you're without regulators. Similarly, the same principle applies when dealing with deploying a dSMB, although there's less concern about holding one's breath since dSMBs are typically deployed at shallow depths. The process involves taking a deep breath, exhaling onto the dSMB, and refraining from inhaling again before releasing the dSMB, as inhaling could alter buoyancy by adding more air. So, my question is: Is this indeed true? I have this training coming up in a couple of weeks (including the release of dSMB at depth) and would appreciate your clarification.

NOT TRUE. When the ‘Rubber’ like shoulder straps start to dry, crack and break down, you won’t be able to replace them. The life of this vest is the length of time before the rubberized shoulder straps last. I wouldn’t buy.

Some good comments and advice! I have also dove with many sharks for many years (about 30 years in the tropics) and agree with what you say, but!!! There are sharks and there are SHARKS! It needs to be mentioned that there are a few (2 really) types of shark that require special attention, I'm not going to include Bull sharks because they are usually not a problem for divers- more swimmers and waders! Great White sharks and Oceanic White Tips are two sharks that will attack without notice and have done so many times. If you see these guys the advice given still stands- but don't hang about gawking- get into a group, get to the wall or bottom, maintain eye contact and be prepared to stand your ground if there is no other way and do it now- without looking like your panicking!

Use a Ammonite battery, which has also a "middle" position power (of about 70%). Combined with an extra "add on ring" (with the cable inlet) on your regular suitvalve a nice combination.

Clarification in what was said in the video. For six years with the Air2 version I have been able to fit a large amount of gear in the back pack. I carry a main regulator set, bail out regulator set, snorkel, mask inside a rigid plastic mask box from the retail shelf, dive computer, Paralanz dive camera, two dive lights, a dive knife. To say I get a lot of kit inside. The point of clarification is that you can have large dive fins as I use the Apeks RK3 Fins. The design intent is that you place your fins over the back of the backpack and use the compression straps to hold them to the backpack as you walk around and it works very well. I have used this several times on airline trips to Hawaii as this is my carry-on luggage, with zero issues!

This is an easier install system as follows- ** Remove the entire zip cuffs from your drysuit turn it inside out insert metal band grease o- ring and install it put entire cuff under running water (bathtub) and return outside in (works very slick) finish the rest of the rings/ bands voila' re-install zip cuffs to drysuit but wet the grooves (slick) and/ or watch other video on how to install zip cuffs

This is two versions. One with a regular inflator and one with the Air2. Obviously, the air two is a full-blown bailout regulator on the end of the inflator hose therefore the more expensive version you have likely stumbled across on your Internet research on pricing.
