    Thanks for a great guide! Since I did my OWD I prayed every dive I will not face the situation where I would need to use this skill. Once I saw your video I decided to deal with my fears. And for now it’s in past. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y6d2x5uen9nJkZs.html

    Thank you! No one told me to tilt the head😵 I just came out of the water, with panic attack. Of course the damned bubbles entered my nose, sinuses and brain! I was thinking to do just that next time, to tilt the head! And then I found you, saying the same thing 😘

    Omg I wished I had you as my instructor! So thorough and patient. When I was doing the practice to take off the entire mask and put it back at 5m, I forgot to tilt my head, and breathed in water >< From then, I prayed I wouldn’t be in a situation where I need the skill 😭

    I’m doing the scuba certification . I felt comfortable doing all other skills except the one you have you take the mask off and breath for a whole minute then put it back . For some reason I couldn’t do it I keep mentally thinking about my nose and breath fast . Now i see what I was doing wrong is I didn’t angle my face so the bubbles were hitting my nose directly and that’s where I was feeling uncomfortable. Thanks again

    Perfect tips, thanks a lot! I'm gonna practice. I had big troubles with this during my OWD and I'm doing advanced and rescue next year so I want to deal with this so I can focus on that instead of my mask removal problems. During my OWD course, one of the other divers kicked to my face accidentally and flooded my mask. It was completely fine, didn't expect it but I cleared it without any problem. But removing it completely was hell so I think it's just in the head.

    Saltwater is not a big deal as long as you stay under water. But in contact with air the salt will burn your eyes... ;-)

    There is no trick to it. Just open your eyes. The first few times it will sting but you will get used to it. Try in the shallows first

    I can't get past the first step! :( It's not that I'm breathing through my nose, I'm not. I can put the tip of my nose under water and breath through the snorkel just fine. No water going in through my nose, no bubbles coming out. The problem I have is that once my nose is fully submerged (up to my eyes) it just fills with water. Firstly this hurts, and secondly the water runs through my nose into my throat and chokes me. I've read something online about using your soft palate to shut off your nasal passage, but I can't seem to do it. I can close both airways, or neither, but not just my nasal breathing. I'm surprised that they don't talk about this in Scuba training, and there's so little information online about it. I'm beginning to wonder if I just have the wrong shaped mouth/nose and will never be able to do it (which is a problem as I joined a Scuba club and I'm halfway through my BSAC Ocean Diver training). =(

  • @rickja4116

    @rickja4116

    @Adam Unfortunately not. I was able to get a bit further through my SCUBA training by simply pinching my nose, and blowing air out of it for a few seconds between pinches/wearing the mask. It was quite stressful doing this at depth though, as I knew that one mistake would mean beginning to drown (which happened on a couple of occasions). I quit before qualifying sadly, but I'm happy that I gave it my best shot.

    The same thing happened to me when I first tried this skill in shallow water. The students I was with had no issues, but I kept getting water in my nose and having to come up. Eventually the instructor pinched my nose for me while I removed and replaced my mask, and I figured out that exhaling through my nose while my mask is off will prevent water from flooding in. The first time it happened, I choked and had to surface and nobody explained to me to tilt my head either. I also wear contacts so I can't open my eyes underwater, and it just feels scary and disorienting. I'm glad I found this video.

    Really sorry but this video is close to useless. You are Not teaching people *how* to not breathe water up their nose. Some people no matter how long they practice will suck water up their nose as they breathe from the reg. You need to tell them what to do with their soft palate! For the small proportion of people with this problem your video SHOULD have said... Can you blow up a balloon without pinching your nose? If "yes" you can scuba. Can you suck a really thick milkshake up a straw without having to hold your nose? If "yes" then you can dive without a mask. The cue to learn the skill for someone who just can't seem to do it is to start with a snorkel but try to suck/clench really hard as if they are sucking the world's thickest milkshake. This is the cue they need to close their soft palate and unlock the skill. All these videos are made by diving instructors who did this skill instinctively and Don't understand the problem this small proportion of students have. Give your students this cue and they'll master the skill
